  1. So...I made a decision a while back to keep my Macbook Pro 9,1, i7, GT650 video, as NVidia site as well as Apple said it would support Big Sur. I gave it a birthday, replaced all the thermal paste, upped the RAM, SSD, the thing flies with Catalina and is rock solid. Now Apple no longer shows it supported for Big Sur! I suppose its reasonable to keep running Catalina for the foreseeable future, until plugins/Logic etc require an update to run. It just annoys me that I did all that based on Apple's website, then they changed it. I would like to get a few more years out of the old girl!
  2. One big thing that impresses me about the intel macs (I have an Imac and a Macbook) is how seamlessly they go to sleep and wake up. NEVER had a Windows PC or laptop do it this well or without problems. Never had a problem either. The convenience for me of a quick wake up, particularly on the macbook, outweighs any other possible benefit to not using it. Just my 2c based on my own experiences. I may change my mind if I have problems, but that hasn't happened yet...touch wood!
  3. Gate, Comp, EQ or Gate, EQ, Comp seems completely normal to me. Think about the live analog world. Outboard gate/comp units - gate is always first, then comp. Inserts on consoles are usually pre-eq. Why would you think it odd? http://tinyurl.com/yfjcv9n
  4. Agreed. Had very confusing issues in my early days with Logic because of this problem - now I avoid it like the plague. I do wish there was an easier solution to A/B ing mixes though....
  5. Hypethically, I could sell my logic 8 upgrade, because the full version I own is Logic 7. With the dongle plugged in (new build mac) logic 9 update just installed seamlessly.
  6. That = merge function go me too. I used it all the time. Now in 9.0.2 it's ctrl =. A bit annoying... standard key commands too, I don't customize them. I should change it back...
  7. Logic 9 refused to install on my Tiger machine, had to upgrade to Leopard to get it to install. So the answer is no, it won't run on Tiger.
  8. Trashed prefs, removed all hardware, removed and re-installed Logic, still crashed. Created a new account, issue seems to be resolved.... How odd.... 8)
  9. Does anyone know if it's possible for a plugin (component) to cause issues with Logic if it's passed validation, and is not even being used in a project? (but is available).
  10. Not sure where you got that (erroneous) info. First of all, numbers aside, in real life and actual experience, SATA (and eSATA) totally smokes FW800 out of the water. Now if you like numbers.. FW800 = 786 Mbit/s ~ 80 MB/s (closer to 50 or 60MB in real life) eSATA 3.0 (current standard) = 3,000 Mbit/s ~ 300MB/s Yes, I know a Byte = 8 bits, but with the encoding used by those protocols, you're going to need about 10 bits to carry 8 bits of data....which explains the 1:10 ratio you're seeing. So in MB/s, eSATA is still about 220 MB/s faster than FW800. Ok David, you're right. I was thinking of an older macbook pro (which is only about 20MB/s faster, see the link). On a Mac Pro eSata smokes FW800. I think it depends on what express card interface you use too, or if you use a direct eSata port. I'll bow out as my ignorance is showing...... http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-Drive-SATA-vs-Firewire.html FW800 is still totally usable though for anything but really big track counts....
  11. Got a little problem, but hoping a subsequent Logic or OSX or Metric Halo update may solve it so I'm persevering... Logic 9 crashes occasionally (unexpectedly closes), and I haven't been able to pinpoint what is causing it. It has happened: -After a bounce -just after opening a project or template (freshly created, not old) -after saving as... and at seemingly unrelated random times. Logic DOES however work fine 95% of the time, has not crashed while tracking (touch wood), and I really like it's new features. When it does crash, I just open the crash backup file and everything is there, so it hasn't caused me any major grief apart from being really annoying. What I did..... Completely fresh (re-format/re-partition in Windows speak) full install and full updates of, in this order: Snow Leopard (went without a hitch) Metric Halo MIO 5.2 (Incl MIO Console Connect plugin - running in conduit mode) Logic 9 (Full clean install) Superior Drummer 2 (full latest version) Melodyne Plugin. These are the only third party plugins I am using, apart from Yohng W1 limiter sometimes. At this point I experienced some random Logic crashes. I did the Logic update 9.0.2 yesterday - no change. During this time, I have installed Parallels, Toast 10 and a couple of other things - no issues whatsoever with Snow Leopard or anything else. Only thing I can think of is possibly a Metric Halo driver issue, but I'm running the latest version (Snow Leopard compatible) and am running out of ideas - besides, MH drivers are normally very stable. Very strange behavior. Before, Tiger and Logic 8 were bullet proof (silly me...not going back now though). I don't even have logic 8 installed - just did the full fresh Logic 9 install. Any ideas???
  12. iMAC Connections and expansion: One FireWire 800 port; 7 watts Total of six USB 2.0 ports: four ports on computer, two ports on wired keyboard So David's statement is true and fact. It will basically be a dock for a hard drive and will NOT function as an eSATA drive would. When connected, the best performance will be what the FW800 can deliver. It would be cool, but No, you cannot connect eSATA drive to an iMAC. Yep, we're basically all saying the same thing. BTW, eSATA is just an interface that allows connection to and hot swapping of a SATA drive. So this interface will work on an Imac, and allow you to connect a SATA drive (via USB or FW), but will NOT add an eSATA interface. Also, FW800 is only about 10 - 15 MB/s slower than eSATA. All clear as mud??? lol
  13. Not quite true David. It's for a SATA hard drive, and will connect to any computer with Firewire, USBs or eSata. I might have to get me one! So yes, it will work fine with an Imac. BUT, using a SATA drive on a USB or Firewire port will not give you eSata speeds. 8) http://www.macintouch.com/reviews/voyagerq/
