  1. soundbase, can you give an example of a vocal sound that you have in mind, say from either a contemporary singer and song or someting older?
  2. This is coming to a city near me in a week. Is it worth it? Last time they came around with 7, I thought it would just be a sales pitch but there were some neat techniques thrown in that made it worth it. Anyone see this one? Should I bother going?
  3. Wow. This was only a matter of time. After all, our ears/brains do this with notes within cords. So there shouldn't be any theoretical reason that we couldn't write an algorithm to do it. Now who wouldn't love to see Apple come out with a similar technology and release it along with a Logic update. C'mon Apple.
  4. A couple of things. 1. To get Ivory to run under Leopard you need ilok. Not a big deal but some people find it a pain to have a USB hub with the ilok dongle stuck there. 2. I've run Ivory off a Lacie 250 Gb, 7200 firewire 400 drive successfully for a year without any problems or compromises in the sound. 3. I have stopped using Ivory since getting Logic 8 since the included Steinway Studio piano from the Orchestral Jam Pack is good enough for anything but classical piano recordings, which Ivory isn't good enough for anyway.
  5. I've been reading quite a bit about just how terrific the new compressor is. Well, after two months of putting it through its paces on everything from sensitive female vocals to screaming overdriven male vocals to smashed drum kits, I can definitely report that it's even better than I've read. In fact, the analog saturation alone sounds better than some favorite third party plugs designed strictly for that purpose. Throw the limiter on and boost the gain even without engaging the compressor and put the saturation on soft.
  6. I don't think you are going to see any benefits from this. You want to bounce your 44.1kHz mix to a higher sample rate so that the plugs will all benefit from that higher sample rate. BUT . . . won't the sample rate conversion be done AFTER all of the calculations, summing etc. Your project is at 44.1. every compressor, eq, verb in your project operates on these audio files at THAT sample rate during the offline bounce. After the mix is summed, then the outcome is converted to a file with the higher sample rate. I think that's the order in which the processing takes place. The only benefit I see here is if you then wanted to master that mix later and use some nice plugs on the already bounced 88khz file. Now they function at a higher sample rate. But such nice mastering plugs would probably already upsample their audio anyway to a higher sample rate. They'll do it automatically for you. Logic's plugs don't do that right? I think some of the nicer third party AU stuff does. At least on the PC side I have a friend who is always raving about his upsampling plugs from ???? I can't recall.
  7. Well , just to report, I found out that the Steinway is part of the orchestra jam pack. I was able to install just that pack with out its loops too. A total of 12 Gbytes when I was done. And although Logic installer warned that the old single 800 MHz G4 processor was too slow, the graphics card was below minimum recommendations, and I only had half of the recommended minimum vRam- L8 installed fine and works fine as a single virtual instrument player for live gigs. I haven't tried Mainstage yet.
  8. Thanks. I checked them out. They do sound nice. The problem is, I don't have Reason. I do have Logic Studio.
  9. I absolutely love the Studio Steinway channel strip that loads from Logic 8's library. It's hard to believe but, despite the lack of 10 velocity layers, I prefer it to the sound of even my Ivory pianos. Now I want to get that instrument into my laptop that I use on gigs. But it's an old laptop with only a 27GB drive and only about 12 GB open. I know I can install Studio 8 on one more machine other than my desktop. But with only 12 GB open on the laptop . . . is there a way to get just a few instruments like this Steinway in? When I installed 8 on my desktop it seemed to be more of an all or nothing choice when it came to the audio content. Thanks
  10. I could not agree more with you about both Logic's Plugs and Ozone's reverb. I don't know what it is about that verb but it just sounds fantastic. Instead of gumming up the mix it glues it together and adds really adds the sense that all the instruments were played in an actual space.
  11. Man, I love that Apple went dongle free and that I can fly around the country with 8 on my macbook pro. But I 'm just bummin that I still need to stick an iLok key in a USB port where it can snap off - or worse, I can lose it. I've gone so far as to email some third party AU vendors expecting . . . I don't know what. But there seems to be no good solution. I'm actually not using some really nice URS and Waves plugs that I paid for because I don't want to travel with that darn key. I don't know what point I want to make with this post, and I know full well why companies need iLok. Maybe I'm just looking for a little solidarity. I feel like someday soon, we, the Logic community might hold enough cards to start boycotting iLok - or is this just a dream? In the mean time, those new compressor algos in Logic 8 are sounding better and better and Sonalksis plugs are looking finer and finer too.
  12. Actually, regarding Ivory and Leopard, I spoke with Synthogy (makers of Ivory) a month ago about this and here's what's coming down the pike regarding Leopard. When they release the update that allows Ivory to run under Leopard, you are going to need an iLok key to run it. That's theyirofficial position. They have decided to go the iLok route. I expressed my disappointment since it absolutely sucks having an iLok sticking out the USB port of your macbook when on the road. They suggested a usb hub (not much better) and assured me that I could just stay on Tiger and avoid Leopard forever (yeah right!) Now I love Ivory but I thought this was an unfortunate turn of events worth mentioning.
  13. Lacie drives have been solid for me. I've got 3 of their 250 Gb triple interface drives (I think they call them D2 extremes) and two more their newer 500 Gb triple interface drives. My wife has a similar 320 Gb model and she loves it. The 250s have been going strong for 2.5 years, one is only a startup disk clone so doesn't see much action. Another is a general data backup disk, and the last is for large sample libraries (Ivory etc.). They are all on firewire 400. The newer 500s have only been on my server for 3 months so no longevity comments here.
  14. This is an amazing thread. This guy writes about how he used to use Logic, switched to Pro Tools, but is secretly pulling for Logic, despite it being the underdog. And we are all writing back these long, thoughtful treatise. He "didn't look back " after making the switch but yet is reading and posting on a Logic forum - and by the way, he has a total of 8 posts. Hmm? I wonder if you totaled up all of the minutes spent by everyone writing in this thread if you would have enough time to say, mix a hit song. And now I'm spending time writing here too. Aghh! Apple is a retail company that wants to sell products. Right now, Logic is selling better than ever. At our local Guitar Center, they are rolling out box after box of Logic Studio. The Pro Tools LE and m-powered Christmas Special "get yourself started with a studio" special packs are just sitting there on the floor. Even the pro audio department manager, himself a die-hard pro-tools user for 10 years is always overheard saying to uncertain customers: You would have to be crazy not to buy Logic Studio for everything that you get with it. Consumer-grade, Pr0-grade, grandma-grade . . whatever. Logic is selling like mad. Apple is doing something right.
  15. Never mind the compressors. What mic/pre combination did you use?
