  1. I've used an M-Audio Firewire Solo and loved it. It was cheap and did what I needed. I have since upgraded, but in my experiences, you get way you pay for with M-Audio: decent sound, simple setup. You could also look into using an optical connection between two interfaces to minimizes the amount of latency.
  2. You should know that the MPC does not have any sounds at all. It is strictly a sampler/sequencer, which means you have to load the samples in. Whether its downloading samples from the web, recording samples your self, chopping up some records, or whatever, you can only use the sounds you load into the MPC. I have an MPC1000 and love it, but like David said, it really boils down to how you want to work. You can do the same exact things inside of logic that you can inside of the MPC. I would say the trade off is that Logic has more power, but to me it feels less of an "instrument" that the MPC can feel like. I usually make my sounds and chop up my samples inside of Logic, then I transfer them to the MPC and play with them there. It works well for live applications. Once I come up with a nice beat that I feel works well, I simply record it back into Logic. I'm sure there's a better way, but I'm still figuring out how to sync the MPC via MIDI to my computer.
  3. I am sending several guitar tracks to a bus so that the inserts affect all of the guitar tracks the same, but I would like to pan them differently. In the individual channel strip setting I am panning it the way I want to, but in the bus it is coming out of the center (where the majority of the guitars should be). Any way to pan the tracks individually before it is sent to the bus?
  4. Another option you have is to get and interface that has those multiple discreet in's and then get a firewire control surface, such as the Mackie MCU Pro. The mixer doesn't handle any actual audio (the interface handles all of that), the MCU just allows you to have physical control over everything you would normally use a mouse to adjust inside of Logic.
  5. Well you won't have to wait to long since the even on March 2nd is supposed to announce the new one, but I highly doubt it. The more computer-like things the iPad can do (file storage, USB, ability to use external soundcards), the more it will cannibalize there computer sales.
  6. In my project studio I have an 8pre going directly out into some studio monitors. I want to add some headphone outs to my live room. I want to know how the best way of doing this will be. So far, I have two main thoughts: first I can get a headphone mixer, something I can have talkbalk on the unit itself (like the Presonus Hp60 or Monitor Station) and then run long stereo cables through the wall into the live room where the guys are playing. The next option is to get just a small unpowered mixer, have the main outs from my interface as well as a talkback mic be the inputs, and then have the outputs go to the studio monitors as well as a small, cheap headphone mixer in the live room (like HP4). There's got to be an easier way to do this, but i believe I am limited with the 8pre limited outputs. Any suggestions?
  7. I am using a MOTU 8pre that has only 2 outputs (Main L and R). I am starting to look for a headphone monitoring system (hoping for less then $200) that I can use for tracking 3 or 4 people. My interface is located in a separate room that I'll be recording in. Any suggestions on what model? How would I hook this up, do I need an simple unpowered mixer in between the main output, the studio monitors, and the headphone mixer?
  8. Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie and David Bazan because of how they make the most basic things sound so detailed an interesring, and Cedric Bixler-Zavala from The Mars Volta because of how bizarre his lyrics are.
  9. Since the iPhone just dropped $200 in price, Jobs wrote a letter to existing iPhone owners: To all iPhone customers: I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions. First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season. Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced. Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these. Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned. We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple. Steve Jobs Apple CEO w00t! This means a little bit less for my new MBP!
  10. So I am starting my little "project studio" (Man that term has been thrown around like a mother.) and I have almost decided on all the gear I want. I am not spending too much money at first, just because I want the basics of recording. I am getting a Macbook Pro right after they get updated again (so probably in Late October/Early November) and a Firepod. If we pretend that the MBP is going to stay the same specs, it is 2.2GHz and 2GBs of RAM. Will the current MBP specs handle all 8 inputs recording at the same time from the Firepod? And when I have the Firepod, if I disconnect it going from place to place, would I have to redo all the drivers and everything, or should it just plug-in and remeber everything?
  11. Browsing around the PreSonus's website, I found this: http://www.presonus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2297 Hopefully this isn't too old.
  12. You know, ever since we hooked up our Mac Pro at my work to our 003, we have been having some crashing issues. I suggest going with Apogee over Digidesign. EDIT: Oh yeah, first post, BTW
