  1. I would love to install Tiger on my new machine but I've been told by Apple that this shouldn't be done. I was in a situation where I had to buy a new machine and I had no choice over which OS was installed - sadly it seems as though I'm stuck with Leopard. I'm new to Logic. I've been using PT for nearly 10 years as my work was more production focussed. As this has changed and I find myself doing more music I decided to give Logic a try. Having used PT and Ableton Live I have to say that Logic has been the most unstable software I've ever experienced. And I agree with Homina. Until I saw this post I had the usual paranoia - is it my machine or is it the software. I even spoke to a Apple rep who had never heard of anyone having the same thing. It is great that I now know it is a bug that other people are experiencing. I wouldn't have known that without this forum. I don't particularly like spending my time having to play detective to work out why my software won't work, I'd much rather spend my time being creative. There are lots of positives with Logic 8 and I'm really frustrated that they are outweighed by the stability issues. I can't wait for it to work. I'll keep an eye on updates and hopefully soon it will become stable. I'm glad I've got this forum to help me. Simon
  2. I'm just glad (well thats a bit selfish!) that it isn't just me. For me it is just another example of the instability of this software. The only way I managed to overcome this problem was by creating a duplicate of the offending track manually and then copying the midi part onto this. It didn't always work though. And even when it did it wasn't really a usable fix - imagine you are just playing around with ideas and every time you stop and want to play back what you just recorded you have to manually duplicate the track - its a pain in the a**. This along with the SDIR problem is enough to stop me using Logic for the time being. All though saying that I am at this moment doing a complete re-install of Leopard (yes I know I shouldn't but after doing research online it seems that I shouldn't try and install Tiger on my new machine because it will cause too many problems). I'm going to re-install Logic and see if it fares any better. Simon
  3. I can back this up. I have had exactly the same problem. Still don't know why it is happening. Using Logic 8 on latest Imac with 4GB memory. Mbox audio interface. Minimoog Voyager as my controller keyboard. This problem has driven me MAD! S
  4. Thankyou gulplug for this Arp switcher. Having come from Ableton Live and its easy to use Arpeggiator I have to say I am finding it hard to use the Logic Arp. I usually use the Arp with external instruments. How could I convert your Arp switcher to work with external Midi instruments? Thanks again. PS. Whenever I set up a Arp it always stops when in cycle mode and the loop returns to the start. Is this normal behaviour? S
  5. I tried the Apple memory test and it showed no problems. Interestingly I went to a pro composer event last week and pretty much everyone I spoke to was sticking with Logic 7 for now. I don't have that option so will have to ride out the bumps and pot holes. Still interested to see if anyone is having the same midi region problem that I am experiencing. Straight after recording a midi region it won't play back. I can see the midi info and also play the instrument with the keyboard but the region itself won't play back until I move it to another track. Anyone? Would be good to know if this was another unexplainable bug or just something I'm missing. I don't think it is the latter but I'm willing to be proved wrong! Thanks for everyones suggestions on this thread.
  6. Thanks for all the feedback, it is interesting to get others perspective on this. Pantomime Horse makes some good points and I have to say I agree. To be honest I didn't want to move to leopard but I purchased a new iMac and it was pre-installed of course. I was told by Apple support that I would need a 'Retail' version of Tiger if I wanted to install this on my new machine which would cost me £60. (they said I couldn't use a disc that came with another computer because these are model specific). I have Tiger installed on an external drive and I can boot from this (I have to have this for Pro Tools as it hasn't been made Leopard ready yet). Thanks for the apology Tiny333, really no need though. I'm glad you are having no problems and I just hope I can work mine out soon. Oddtime - I've got 4GB Ram which is the maximum I can install. Yes the RAM was a little on the cheap side. Could this really cause problems? If so I might need to invest in some serious memory. Any suggestions? The only third party plugin I have been using is Kontakt 3. In fact in the session that now won't record without crashing I had setup a multitimbral instance of Kontakt - I wonder if this caused the problem. I must say that Kontakt doesn't seem too stable at the moment. Anyone else using it had any problems? Just out of interest is everyone who has commented here not having the problem with Space Designer finding SDIR files every single time you change preset? If you have a fix please let me know. Thanks
  7. Thanks for the support! Look I'm willing to accept I'm not an expert on Logic. I've been using computer based sequencers for over 10 years with my main platform being Pro Tools. I switched to Logic only at the end of last year so I'm still learning, but... I'm not trying to do anything complicated just basic things like record. The problems always seem to be pretty random and that is what makes the platform so untrustworthy for me. I'm also picking up on well documented bugs like the SDIR file locating problem. I have a brand new imac running leopard. Everything is updated and all my other software runs without problem. The fact that it isn't stable working on different machines is still a fault I put at Apples door. Its not like our computers can be 'that' different is it? I have posted a couple of of the problems I've been having with Logic. Maybe someone might have a look and help out this faulty 'operator'! Thanks
  8. for now.... I've got a tight deadline and I've spent more time trying to find SDIR files, dealing with midi regions that won't play back (see my other post on this) and now I seem to have a problem with the session I am using. It crashes as soon as I try and record anything. I moved over to Logic because I thought it was meant to be the professional choice. So far my experience has been far from professional. Dealing with the bugs constantly eats into creative time. Apple I suggest you remove the Pro from the title of your software, at least until you make it stable. I want to like Logic but it just can't be trusted with important work.
  9. I forgot to add that this isn't just happening in takes mode for me. I still haven't worked it out yet though I think you are on to something. S
  10. This problem is driving me mad. Every time I try and record a midi region, it won't play back. The only way it will play back is if (a) I shut down and restart or (b) I move the midi region to a different channel. Both of these solutions are unsatisfactory. I've got to say that my work time split looks like this - 50% being creative 25% searching for SDIR files 25% dupliaction midi channels to force silent midi regions to play It is driving me mad. I have deadlines to meet!!!
  11. Did you ever work out what was causing this? I am having exactly the same problem and it is driving me mad. Please if anyone has a fix for this please let me know. Thankyou
  12. Hi there. I have a really frustrating problem relating to playback of midi regions. This is what happens - I have a software instrument set up on a channel, press record and then play something on the keyboard. I can see the midi notes going in and being recorded. I press stop and the region seems OK. The problem happens when I try to play it back - nothing happens. The only way to get the recorded region to play is by duplicating the channel and copying the region across. As you can imagine this problem is causing me real disruption. Anyone else struggling with this? Thank you in advance. Simon
  13. I will join your crusade. This 'helpful' feature is very annoying.
  14. I've used a MBox 2 and Logic 8 without any problems after switching from Pro Tools. At some point I want to upgrade to a Firewire interface now I'm free from having to use Digidesign hardware. I've done some pretty big projects using the Mbox and not had any crashes so I wouldn't worry too much.
  15. I can second that. I use an MBox 2 and it works fine with Logic 8.
