I think i've got it now, It looks as if it was the options in the Audio MIDI Setup menu were the problem, it was on 8 channels of audio rather than 6, I also changed the sample/bit rate to 44.1/16bit to make sure and it looks as if that's solved the problem.

Hi guys I'm having a problem with my 5.1 setup in logic pro 8. My current setup is a MBP with 4gig of ram and I'm using an m-audio sonica usb sound card. The problem only seems to be in logic, iTunes plays the demo CD with 5.1 mixes of various artists in full surround, and it's the same with the dvd player. However when I try to do something in logic it always has some sort of distortion from somewhere. I've checked the settings in both the audio preferences menu and in the Audio MIDI Setup utility and they're both set up right according to the manual. Any help would be amazing. Thanks
