  1. Good song, dude. Heard some Squeeze influence in there maybe? My heads kinda stuffed up right now, so my ears no help to anybody, but I didn't hear anything that distracted me from the song. Good stuff.

  4. I'm willing to bet most people aren't familiar with this song, even if they do know about Jeff Buckley…. That being said - major kudos for this cover. The vocals are spotty, but you went for it bro, and in places the vocs are special. The mix is a little up and down, but its seeping vibe, which i think is so much harder to achieve. So many people get really proficient at the software, and never work on developing their musical ability. Just by virtue of the song you chose to cover, you had to have grown some. I don't know what to say - i'm tickled shitless!
  5. Ok, i have to ask because i'm befuddled by this too - backward stringing? Do you mean that the strings don't follow the 6=E, 5=A, 4=D, 3=G, 2=B, 1=E sequence? If its not strung correctly thats going to give you all sorts of problems. You bridge saddles were originally set up for specific gauges of strings, as was your nut. If you not stringing it correctly, the strings won't fit in the saddles and nut, causing buzzing, slippage, all kinds of grief. First thing you should do is get a new set of strings if thats the case, and string it up correctly. If you're not sure how, take it to the guitar shop, buy the strings and ask them to string it up for you. Also, while i agree the ibanez is probably a good fit for you, thats not gonna matter if you don't have a basic grasp of set up and maintenance. Try following the advice in redlogics post with your epiphone, before you go and invest in a new guitar. I would hate to think of you buying a new guitar and then it getting out of whack again down the road, frustrating you to the point of not wanting to pick up the guitar. Finally, Davids advice is great, and it really isn't that much work. If you strum the progression to knockin' on heavens door while watching an episode of how i met your mother, you be surpassed at how quickly your fretting chords cleanly.
  6. I know you're asking David, but if you don't mind, i'll chime in in the man time. Too me it sounds like a simple combination of a fuzz pedal (like a fuzz face) and the neck pickup of an electric guitar. I'm pretty sure you could get close with a les paul or a strat. In logic, i would suggest loading a audio channel strip with the pedal board and then amp designer and selecting the vintage or modern british stack in amp designer, try to get that fairly clean sounding, then go back into pedal board and select happy fuzz face or the other red one. Make sure you check it out with you guitars pickup selector on the neck pickup (on a tele, the switch should point towards the headstock and tuners). Play around with it, have fun.
  7. You can't just plug a set of headphones in the guitar and expect it to sound like an electric guitar. You need some sort of interface, be it a tiny little headphone amp like the box that is mentioned above, or an iPhone or iPad app (which also requires an interface cable - this is often what you end up paying for and the app is free), or a guitar amp with a headphone jack, which as mentioned before, almost all of them have. You can still play the electric guitar without plugging it into anything and hear it without disturbing anyone, just won't sound like an electric guitar. Or an acoustic for that matter. My 2 cents - take a look at something like the Fender GDEC - it has lots of modeled amp sounds (like the iPad apps), it also has an accessible library of backing tracks to practice with, it has a headphone jack, and it has a speaker, so if your son should ever want to lug his gear over to a buddies to have a jam, he's good to go. The fender is by no means the only option - all major amp makers have something like that these days - its just the only one i know for sure offers backing tracks. Oh, and you may be able to find a package deal with the holidays approaching
  8. Hey Bob, Maybe a pic of the guitar would help? Im confused by you saying it has humbuckers and piezos... Couple of things it might be: 1) The truss rod may be loose in the neck now. I would think you would hear that if you just gently shook the guitar side to side. This is probably a hard repair. But its covered in erlewines book 2) you may have a loose fret (or frets). Gently tug at both fret ends of each fret to see if they move. Easy fix, and its covered in erlewines book. 3) Could be a loose nut. Easy, erlewine. yada yada. 4) Could be loose tuner. see above. Like i said, a pic can't hurt.
  9. Nice Rev! I wasn't familiar with the original, but i listened to it first, and thought to myself that Serj's voice had an Ozzy thing going on that i hadn't really noticed in SOAD. So i was a bit tickled when i got a few seconds into your track and heard what to my ears was a bit of a nod to sabbath. I also liked the bungle meets zappa with a touch of p-funk treatment for the vocal section through the end. Horns are great as i would expect from you.

Ridiculously good stuff, Rev Makes me want to drag you out to a park or garden in the sunshine though - i have an image of you skulking around some dark, dank library in a victorian manor smoking opium all day waiting for the clock to strike midnight so you can compose on parchment paper by the light of a single candle...

I agree with everyone - this is really well done! sVendetta's comment is interesting to me, i thought similarly, but then realized the verse is a roger waters vocal which is kind of unique and off handed in its delivery. When the dave gilmour part comes in you freaking nailed it though!!! Uncanny resemblence! Not saying the verses are bad mind you, but you are in your comfort zone (no pun) with Gilmour. Really well done dude!
  12. EDIT - i gave some bad advice. I checked on youtube and it seems vocals are a 1/2 step down (D flat minor).

Though, for sheer production talent, I'm blown away by the skill of the guys who managed to capture great sounding recordings in the 20s and 30s (especially jazz records, Ellington comes to mind), with severe technical limitations compared to what you see in studios today. Wholeheartedly agree. I have a modest collection of old albums, and even on Hank Williams tracks i appreciate how every instrument has its place. And the jazz and big band stuff is amazing. I tend to think that is a testament to really great composition - those guys knew what they were doing for sure. As for everything coming out of Abbey Road (Andreww) - i don't know. I would imagine some crap got pumped out of there every now and then, but it probably is relatively safe to say that. Those guys knew what they were doing too (the staff engineers).

  15. I agree with Rumours as well - and i know i read an article in mix magazine about it years ago, but i can't get to it online. This is an interesting thread to me, because in thinking about it, my favorite productions tend to be either recorded in the 70's, or reminiscent of that type of production. And that probably comes from my early influences, which was another great subject by Rev (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=79149&p=421139#p421139), that i don't think i participated in. So as a kid riding shotgun with my mom on trips to the grocery and such, i was exposed to Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, etc. And as i got older that era became the standard for me, and i've convinced myself it is because they had just the right amount of technology combined with a super high level of musicianship. The technology never really overshadows the musical performance. And its not that i don't like 80's or 90's production - Tears for Fears comes to mind as really good 80's production - its just that i can often hear the technology. Especially in the "hits" of that era. They just are to shiny, and to my ears the musicianship took a bit of a back seat to the production. And i think that's kind of been paralleled in movies and the like. In the 80's, movies had lots of flash, and little substance (i'm talking blockbusters, in comparison to hit records). 60's and 70's were beautifully shot and not so reliant on glitz and pyrotechnics. I feel the same about 70's music production. Thats just my self serving rationalization for my preference.
