  1. I had the same question about the gain reduction metering (using Logic X here), and I happened to discover that it doesn't show up within the Adaptive Limiter plugin, but rather right below the Channel Strip Setting Icon on the Output Channel. Actually, hovering the mouse over it will show "Gain Reduction Meter." There aren't any numbers on the scale, but the gain reduction LED appears in segments, so perhaps a segment is equal to 1db or something like that (see image below, the thumbnail is cut off but the gain reduction meter is at the very top, or click to see the full image). That said, I'm looking into using Voxengo Elephant or FabFilter Pro-L instead, they seem to sound better (though neither beat the price of Adaptive Limiter since it comes with Logic).
  2. Thanks for this great tip, David! Here's the best resource that I've found so far, which was actually about moving samples to an external hard disk, but imo it should apply equally well for backup exclusions: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=97481 I also have Komplete 9, and found the sample files in the users/shared folder. I actually found two instances of this folder on different hard drives, and they were almost the same size. I'm sure that when I reinstalled Komplete 9, the samples were installed on a different hard drive than when they were originally installed long ago, so deleting the old folder will save me a good chunk (about 78GB) of hard drive space (and Time Machine would have diligently backed up both folders)! I wasn't too sure about using Time Machine as a backup utility, but it worked out quite well for me. After my computer crashed without the ability to use any boot options, I replaced my OS drive in bay #1 with a new one, but the computer still wouldn't boot. The culprit was actually the storage drive in bay #2, and after it "bricked" my system would not boot with this drive located in any bay. I copied my old OS drive using Super Duper! to another external drive so that I would have a working boot drive of the original OS, then reformatted and used it in bay #2 to replace the drive that had failed. Recovering the data on that drive was simple as drag and drop from the corresponding drive on the Time Machine backup, and a few hours later all of my files were restored! My Logic projects were on another internal storage drive that wasn't affected by the crash. After reinstalling the OS and many applications, I'm just getting to the point where I'm ready to start using Logic again. Will be interesting to see how it all turns out.
  3. One of my hard drives recently "bricked" and no bootup options would work, so I had to remove it. After installing a new (upside: much larger) hard drive, I reinstalled Mavericks and Logic Pro X fresh. Fortunately, my Time Machine backup was working before the crash so I'm able to retrieve my data. Now I'm ready to configure Time Machine to back up my new system and would like to exclude the "stock" sound banks that don't change and would be reinstalled with the application anyway in the event of another such failure. I looked in the "Logic Pro X" book for "Time Machine" and "back up," but didn't find anything. When I searched for "Time Machine" here in the forum, something like 6,000 posts showed up containing the word "machine." So I'd like to know if anyone has created a list of "Time Machine file and/or folder exclusions" for Logic Pro X. I'm more than happy to read another post if this has already been covered, seems like a pretty common situation that we would all run into? Thanks!
  4. Same issue here. I started Lesson Two in David's book "Logic Pro X," and decided to use my synth since instead of the suggested electric guitar, as my electric guitar is on the blink (i.e. I don't have one ). I could hear MIDI tracks without any problem, but tried everything imaginable with an audio track, but no audio was going to the output. At first, I realized that I needed to reassign the Audio input slot to 7/8 since that's the input for my synth cables. Then I could see audio (moving green bar) in the Channel Strip Volume Fader, and it would also show up in the left Inspector Channel Strip but not the right Inspector Channel Strip aka Output (the vertical strips at the bottom left). In Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio, I ticked "Input monitoring for record-enabled tracks", but there was no change. I also verified that the track was record enabled. Ticking the Input Monitoring Button on the channel strip for the individual track finally allowed me to hear audio. I agree that it would be nice to set a global preference for this rather than each individual track, but I'm hearing audio for the first time now with Logic X and I almost jumped through the roof in excitement! Lastly, just a quick plug for David's book: I barely finished the first lesson and have a pretty solid command of basic shortcut keys that are going to save so much time in the future. I can only imagine how dangerous I will be by the time I finish it!
  5. Update: MOTU advised trying a different power cord (I have already tested the Firewire port and it was fine). If that doesn't work, MOTU offers a flat rate repair/replacement at $99.95 (includes return shipping and 90 day warranty), even after the warranty period has ended. Problem is that I have read several other threads about the "flashing green light" issue, and it has happened even with users' replacement units. So pay $99.95 plus the price of shipping the unit to MOTU for a refurbished 828mk3 Firewire? Please choose one: a. The 828mk3 was $750 new, so having it repaired for a total cost of around $150 (including shipping) and taking my chances isn't bad, plus there's a 90 day warranty, or b. The 828mk3 is now 5 years old and there are many reports out there about the "flashing green light" problem. The build quality of the 828mk3 doesn't seem to be that great, so they probably needed to offer this out of warranty repair/replace option to keep some credibility within the industry. I'd be better off paying more for a new product such as RME or Apogee that has a better build quality and full two-year warranty, since the alternative puts me out about $150 for the refurb 828mk3 anyway.
  6. Now a full 3 years later, I spent another Thanksgiving holiday trying to troubleshoot my 828mk3 instead of using it. Searching for an answer, I found my own post from 3 years ago above! Different issue this time: After upgrading the driver to version 1.6 and rebooting, the 828mk3 display kept flashing green (solid square) over and over. Disconnected from Firewire and rebooted, same result. Turned it on the following morning, same result. Turned it on this evening, now 3 days later and it appears to be back again! The reason I upgraded the driver is to move the 828mk3 over to a MacBook Pro that I have elsewhere. The MBP runs Mountain Lion, and cannot be rolled back to a previous OS version, per Apple. I'm upgrading the 828mk3 with an RME Fireface UCX after doing a lot of research into these audio interfaces. I've found a good number of complaints about the 828mk3 build quality, so if it continues to work with my MacBook Pro, I'll consider myself lucky, No plans to buy any more MOTU products, I believe that I am done.
  7. Well, I just viewed it again, and he is actually using Cubase in that particular video. Steve (Thrillseekers) definitely does use Logic, however, here's a bit from his user forum on that: http://www.thethrillseekers.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=578&highlight=logic Steve Helstrip Posted: Mon Nov 02, 2009 10:50 pm "Well I've just switched to Mac/Logic after nearly 20 years of using Cubase. Cubase 5 itself is very stable, but I was constantly faced with memory issues (not being able to address more than around 1Gb from within Cubase itself on my system). This caused massive instabilities with plug-ins like Omnisphere. Cubase quits without warning when hit with low memory. Logic, on the other hand, allows me to access up to 4Gb, making it a more stable system for me. Have to say, having been using Logic for around 3 months now, I would never switch back. Logic and OS X are so slick, and have many amazing workflow enhancements, that using Cubase on a PC just feels awful now. I believe Cubase and Logic are both incredibly stable in themselves. PCs and Windows XP/Vista (haven't tried windows 7 yet, and am unlikely to) simply aren't, which throws in a whole bunch of other predictable issues. So, it's Mac and Logic all the way from here for me." Another VIP Celebrity citing for the Logic user list is Netherlands DJ duo Rank 1 (Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeij), who this year produced the theme song for Trance Energy 2009 "L.E.D. There Be Light:" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-c1dIIt9Y0 I was at this party in Utrecht, Netherlands with 30,000 of my closest friends, and I can say that it went over quite well! http://www.rank-1.com/transverydigitaldiscom/ (click on the StudioCam link) Current equipment: • Macintosh G5 dual 2.5Ghz 1 Gb • Logic 7.X • Ableton • Native Instruments Reaktor • Spectrasonics Atmosphere • Spectrasonics Stylus RMX • Korg Legacy Collection • Jacobi 3 way monitors • Mackie Big Knob • MOTU 828 MKII • Roland JP8000 • Roland TR 909 • Roland TR 808 • Roland TR 606 • Roland TB 303 • Korg MS20 • Alesis Andromeda A6 • Roland Jupiter 8 • MOog Voyager • Roland MKS80 • Roland JV1080 • Roland JX3-3P • Yamaha DX100 • Doepfer A100 modular • Spirit Live 3 2 • TC Fireworx • Lexicon Alex • Roland SDX330 • Ensonique DP4 • Yamaha G3 Grand Piano • Bass guitar • Electric guitar + Roland VG88 • Acoustic guitar • Rode NTK Condensor Microphone
  8. I also received the email announcement from Native Instruments. Any recommendations on which of these would be best for producing electronic dance music tracks? I have in my notes from attending some various workshops that Battery and Kontakt were two of the best, but they aren't offered on special. I noticed there's an upgrade offer for Komplete 6 for $339, available to registered users of Reaktor 5 until 12/31/09. With Reaktor 5 available for $99 until 11/30, seems the best deal might be to get Reaktor 5 and then upgrade to Komplete 6 by end of year? If my math is right, that would be over $100 less than Komplete 6 by itself...and although the Reaktor 5 special is only for the digital download version, it appears that the boxed version of Komplete 6 upgrade would be same price as the digital version, with free shipping (well, $31 extra for tax here in California, but I assume all the manuals would cost more than that if ordered separately). hmmm...I won't be hitting the malls for sure this Black Friday!
  9. Hey, most of Europe's finest DJ's and producers use Logic! Let's start with the world's #1 DJ/Producer (as voted by mixmag 3 years in a row now), Armin van Buuren. I'm quite sure someone could go down the DJ Mag Top 100 list from top to bottom and the majority of them would be Logic users. For example, I'll add Above & Beyond (U.K.), Markus Schulz(USA), Steve Helstrip (U.K., a.k.a. Thrillseekers), and Sander van Doorn (NL). That must be a good half of the top 10 list (PVD has already been mentioned elsewhere), and the rest want to use it. In fact, Sander van Doorn and Thrillseekers even have websites with training tutorials on how to use Logic! http://www.clubzone.com/news/357/interview-with-armin-van-buuren.html Armin van Buuren: "clubZone – Ok. What kind of technology are you using? Armin Van Buuren – The album was done with Ableton Live and Logic Pro 7. We didn’t use a lot of external or internal plug-ins. We used a little bit of outboard keyboards, because it’s so hands on. A couple of the tracks we wrote didn’t even start with an eight-bar loop. Dance music is made by an eight-bar loop, which you loop; add a bassline, chords and several elements. A couple of those tracks were made with a guitar and a piece of paper, in the kitchen, over a cup of coffee." http://trance.nu/v4/forum/viewtopic.php?t=167706 Tony McGuiness (Above & Beyond): "Logic is certainly the most intuitive and powerful piece of software I have ever used. It does everything you'd want to do and a lot of things you won't have thought of and the virtual instruments EMagic have developed are amazing. The ES1 is arguably the best - it doesn't have the range of sounds that the ES2 has (which is a monster) but its so easy to get a great sound out of it. And for sheer believability, their Rhodes piano deserves an award. As a Mac loonie, I'd say getting Logic would be the best excuse for getting a Mac you could have!" http://dancemusic.about.com/od/remixersproducers/a/MarkusSchulzInt_2.htm Markus Schulz: "RS: What software do you use in the studio? Markus Schulz: My main system is ProTools, and then I also run Logic and Ableton. ProTools is my main weapon of choice." http://www.vstcafe.com/2009/06/sander-van-doorn-studio-sessions-videos.html Sander van Doorn Studio Sessions (Logic) http://www.youtube.com/user/thrilltube#p/a/740231E4EAC457DC/0/YerZlAwEP-w Thrillseekers In the Studio (Logic) If you're into Progressive Trance/Tech, take a listen to Sander's Roundabout...it's my aspiration to make music in Logic half that good someday! In Europe, everyone loves Logic, and we're slowly catching up over here in America!
  10. Hey everyone, this is my first post on the Logic Pro Help forum, but I'm sure it won't be my last. My MOTU 828mk3 is a bit over a year old now, and since the stork dropped it off on my doorstep, I've had two persistent problems. First of all, I diagnosed the unit with MOTU over the phone today and they believe it's an issue needing repair, so I just mailed it back to them. Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone has the same issues. My 828mk3's audio setup is as follows: Firmware 1.06, Bootloader 1.01 Driver 1.4.23 It's paired with my Mac Pro Early 2008 2x2.8GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon, 6GB RAM, running Mac OS 10.5.8 and my Virus KC synth. So, to begin the adventure: First issue was that the 828mk3 would seem to go dormant after some period of time and not produce any audio. Power cycling the unit solved the problem temporarily until it went dormant again. Disabling the Mac's Energy Saver almost solved this problem, but if I left the 828mk3 on and booted up the Mac Pro, then there would be no audio again. Power cycling the 828mk3 would return the audio (seemingly forever with the Energy Saver setting off) until I turned off the Mac Pro. Second issue was that I could play and hear loops, could play and hear MIDI (when run through a synth like ES2), but could never hear any sounds produced through the synth that went into an Audio track. I attended a Logic Workshop at Apple recently (taught by the author of this thread, who I did not meet until the workshop), and he came up with a brilliant suggestion: Get out of Logic and load CueMix FX (which I didn't even realize existed, I have so much to learn), turn up the monitor and listen for sound coming from the synth when it's played. So I did all of that, but nothing. I had tried contacting MOTU through TechLinks several times (one became so old that it was deleted), but most suggestions were to update the firmware and driver (which is always a good idea, but there was no change after doing it). Today, I was very happy to reach a live person on the phone at MOTU who was really helpful and walked me through some ways to troubleshoot the issue: Issue #1 (no sound unless 828mk3 is power cycled): 1. Plug the audio interface into a different Fireware port (done, no change) 2. Turn the interface off, unplug the Firewire port, turn the interface back on and reset to Factory Default (turn Paramater knob all the way to the right, the press Value button twice when prompted (done, no change). Something odd to me was that the green LED display on the interface had always kept cycling over and over (and over and over), never stopping. After I unplugged the Firewire cable and restarted the interface, the LED display stabilized for the first time since I owned it! But, once plugged back into the mac via Firewire, the LED display cycling continued again. Issue #2 (no sound from synth): 1. Check cabling, verify inputs and outputs (done, no change) 2. Test synth with headphones (yes, there was sound, but only through the headphones) 3. Go into MOTU Audio Setup and verify inputs and outputs (done, no change) 4. Go into CueMix FX, verify inputs (make sure slider is all the way up) 5. In CueMix FX, verify outputs...now here's where it got really interesting! Dragging the slider at the bottom (which I didn't even notice was there) all the way to the right displayed a Bus column. Per tech support, Bus should correspond to the output, so I changed it to Analog 1-2. Within a second or two, it would change several times with no human intervention to ADAT, Phones 1-2, Analog 7-8, etc. Every time I changed it back to Analog 1-2, it would go to a different (often multiple) buses, but would only select one by the time it finished. After all this, MOTU decided it was a repair issue, so I spent the price of a couple dinners out to mail it back and should have a new or repaired one in 2-3 weeks. Someone might be thinking "Why put all this troubleshooting here if the unit needed to be repaired?" and the answer is that during my transition to Logic, I went from PC to Mac, from Layla to 828mk3, from Sonar to Logic and everything was quite overwhelming. For many months I had thought this was a Logic issue, that I wasn't doing something right. Two visits to Apple's free workshops, and I had enough understanding of the program to believe that wasn't the case. Finding CueMix FX was also really helpful to take Logic out of the environment. As I sit here today without an audio interface during Thanskgiving holiday when I might actually have time to use it, I'm still thankful that I went to those workshops and asked some questions. Yeah, I felt stupid asking a bunch of beginner setup questions, but I did what needed to be done (well, I guess we'll see on that!) So, if you have an 828mk3 and it's working great, that actually makes me happy (as it seems that many do). If you're just investigating which audio interface to choose, I would evaluate Apogee's line and features against MOTU's and determine what works best for you. I learned during one of the Apple workshops that Apogee is based in Santa Monica, California which help us West Coasters out a lot with the "almost impossible to reach anyone during normal business hours since I have a day job" issue, but maybe MOTU works better for someone on the East Coast. I keep hearing that the sound quality and stability is much better with Apogee, but it's also twice the price for similar features, so something else to consider. Who knows, if these issues go on after I receive the new 828mk3, I may put it up for sale to the highest bidder (as is!) and second mortgage my home to get an Apogee Ensemble as well (Duet doesn't have enought I/O's for me), less the scrap value I'd probably get on the MOTU. Let's just say that at this point, I'm hoping for the best!
