  1. I'm really not sure what on earth is going on here, but any software instrument track that I record on with my keyboard won't play back anything I've played, even if I can visibly see that there's MIDI data there to be played back. Weirder, if I sequence a part on the track by hand, everything is fine, but if I play a single note from the keyboard (Novation SL MkII), I can't get anything at all, and have to create a duplicate software instrument and then drag the region over to the new track. This makes it totally impossible to get anything done obviously, as I have to make a new track and delete another every time I want to punch in... I'm totally at a loss for what's going on here but its only recently started happening. Any ideas?
  2. I've just recently started using a Novation SL MkII MIDI controller with Logic and am trying to get it to work properly with Mainstage. Right now, I two buttons on the SL mapped to Command+Up and Command+Down to change patches and that works fine. I'd like to figure out a way to have the SL's display update with my patch changes though. Anyone know how to do that?
  3. I'm not really sure what the best way to do this is but there are a lot of different situations in which I'd find doing this useful. For example, I need to sequence a synth bass part for a disco track and have it lock in with a live acoustic drum track but I don't have a MIDI groove template for how the hats were swung. I guess I could just use my ears and nudge 16ths around or use bounce-in-place and then quantize the resultant audio track, but I suppose I'm looking for a more elegant solution here?
  4. Hmm.. that's bizarre. Tarekith and I are both seeing a LOT more CPU consumption
  5. Ok yeah I don't know if it was totally clear from the OP but I was talking about about running the UB sequencers simultaneously so you'd have 10 drum tracks playing with a total of 20 space designer instances processing them (2 per UB instance). Tarekith, from your numbers it looks like the 2.66 i7 is giving you ~25% more CPU power over my 2.88 C2D consistently at 5 and 10 tracks playing there. That's exactly what I was looking for.
  6. Ok something is definitely wrong here... I just tried doing 10 identical UB tracks without Space Designer loaded at all with and without my M-Audio Profire 610... ~40%?! Nothing fishy looking in the activity monitor... that is absolutely strange. Any ideas here?
  7. Yeah wow that was so stupid I really should have specified interface and buffer speed. What buffer speed were you using? I was at 128. Sounds like you were probably at 256 or 512, no?
  8. I love Pro-Q. For a coloration EQ, I actually really like Nomad Factory's PulseTeq EQ a LOT. But another big +1 for Stillwell Audio's VibeEQ (much less flexible but much more instantly gratifying in my opinion).
  9. Anyone up for a little real-world testing? Quit out of every application you have open, turn off Airport, boot Logic. Create a software instrument track and load Ultrabeat. Don't change any of the settings but turn the sequencer on. Then, load two instances of Space Designer in stereo and make sure that Ultrabeat's output is set to stereo out. Use the "create track with duplicate channel strip/instrument" command (command + D by default), and duplicate the track 4 times so you have 5. Open the activity manager and let us know what it's % of CPU Logic is using and then try it with a total of 10 duplicates. Post your system specs and figures here. I definitely think that help people know how much more audio-related processing power can be had with the newer machines or at least how much more power you'll have for plugins (my particular interest anyway). I'll go first... 17'' Macbook Pro, 2.8Ghz, 8GB RAM, Intel X-25M G2 160GB SSD 5 Tracks: 60.1% 10 Tracks: 90.2%
  10. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=972288&songID=9089393 That's better. I reamped the bass tone to tweak it a little because I can! Voxengo Elephant on the master bus, some compression and EQ on the drums but nothing really serious. The bass is just a more internally processed Axe-Fx tone with a little low-cut in Logic.
  11. Um.... right hahaha my bad I didn't turn it off when I bounced. I'll re-upload a more legitimate version later today.
  12. This is a little ditty I started on just for fun this morning. ES2, Ultrabeat, Axe-Fx Ultra (dry). http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=972288&songID=9089393
  13. The goopy synth patch that I've sen around the forums over there is mine from almost a year ago so I'm definitely due for an update over there. The trick with bass is you really do have to think outside the box or at least like a recording engineer, tweak clean bends, run a DI, etc.
  14. Adding 2-3ms of latency is roughly equivalent to your walking just a few feet out away from your amp instead of putting your ear drum right on the speaker cone. 1ms latency is definitely not detectable in a live context. I run the Ultra I/Oed in a loop with my Macbook Pro, out to a big 2000W power amp, through my custom 15''/6''/1'' cabinet and I don't feel the latency at 64 buffers on stage. I'm also a drummer of just as many years and have messed around pretty extensively with MIDI drum triggering, mesh heads, etc. 3-4ms at a fast tempo is about the threshold at which I have a 50/50% chance of guessing whether I'm slipping because of latency issues or being paranoid about latency issues and therefore slipping. Honestly, we play really syncopated funky music with a lot of measure-by-measure and beat-by-beat variations. I plug my bass in, keyboard controller in, drum pads in, and most people tell me that I have good time. The thing to remember too is that any time you ever play on any stage, you're going to be dealing with latency from the room, outside, etc. Unless you're in the studio with cans on staring the drummer in the face and recording the track without a metronome, I definitely think the live-performance-latency issue is pretty moot now if you've got a modern machine.
