I use Maschine, and did recently upgrade to the latest release (1.5). I use this as a plug-in in Logic, but I'm not interested in recording directly onto Logic. Instead, I use Logic as an 8xStereo channel instrument, ensuring that each sound is treated individually within each channel on Logic. Each track has it's own compressor, EQ and plug-in settings ensuring I get the best out of each drum sound. You can even add automation to each separate track, such as mute, FX or volume.
The trick here is to ensure you create a 64 bar loop on Massive, and just record the drums using the pads straight into Maschine. It's surprising how much flexibility this gives you - being able to start quite chilled, and build the drums up with your track. It's changed the way I create my drum patterns.
If your song arrangement goes over 64 bars - keep something back for the next 64 bars by bringing in new parts of you beat by un-muting a track or by adding effects via automation.
