  1. My experience with those MyBook drives has been universally "Meh." They're not the sturdiest drives, in my experience, and have a higher rate of failure than I'm comfortable with for recording. What Jordito says about USB vs. Firewire is correct! Also, Logic should go into your Applications folder, period, exactly as he said earlier. Here's what I would use that drive for: I'd use it with Time Machine, and back up all your applications and preferences on your machine. That way if your machine goes down, you can restore it from your Time Machine backups. You don't need quite as robust a drive for Time Machine as you do for recording, so you've got a great use for this drive you got so cheaply and you can use a OWC Mercury Drive or a Glyph hard drive for recording. Good luck!
  2. I correspond/hang out on another web forum with a bunch of guys who LOVE those Soundcraft Ghost mixers, particularly if you've had the Burr-Brown upgrade. These guys provide it as a service: http://www.creationaudiolabs.com/proaudio Here's the thing about outside vs. inside the box, in my experience: Your Ghost is going to color the sound of your mix. It's inevitable. Whether this is a good thing or not doesn't just vary from engineer to engineer, it varies from project to project. Right now I work in a studio with a Control 24, which is just a BAM (big-ass mouse) and we mostly mix in the box there, though we have a Dangerous B-Box for summing and it gets used on some projects. I am looking at going out on my own in the coming year, and I am (probably) going to buy a Neotek console. I will sometimes mix through the console, other times mix in the box. I think it all depends on what the project calls for. The Neotek I am looking at is known for being dark and a tiny bit "dirty." That's going to be perfect for Americana, metal, punk and hip hop. If I get a modern rock project in, or a modern country project, I am *probably* going to stay in the box and give it a modern, bright, clean mix. As for smeary stuff happening, have you checked your pingback? I am new to Logic, but I am migrating to it so that I can have Automatic Delay Compensation. My understanding is that it can sometimes be misconfigured or not working properly. That, I would bet, could cause some smearing. I trust that more knowledgeable persons than me can answer that more comprehensively. gents?
  3. Howdy, y'all. First post as a member of this forum, and I just wanted to say "I love it when the search feature works." this is what I came here to find! I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in the coming months. David, I'll be buying your book here directly. I am a longtime protools user who is kind of fed up with Digidesign. I am planning on going out on my own in the coming year and didn't want to drop a zillion dollars on an HD rig just to get Delay Compensation. But dang, changing programs is like changing brains! I found myself the other night pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to highlight and bounce one section of a recording. I'll get it. I don't want to burden you guys with simple questions like that, but that's what I'm up against. I've used protools just long enough to know it intuitively, which is the hardest workflow to change. wish me luck! I'll do my best to be informative when I can and funny when I can't!
