  1. There are almost 60 gigabytes of Apple Loops on my computer, all of which I assume came packaged in my music software such as Logic and Garage Band. I have never once used an Apple Loop, and I am not sure what they are even for, really. So my question is, should I just delete the whole lump sum of Apple Loops? Is there any point in keeping them around? Am I missing out on something? Should I back them up in case I someday discover some kind of use for them, or are they just a useless waste of space? I have a 2.53 ghz Macbook Pro, so the Loops really are a huge drain on my available memory. But I am reluctant to delete them, because there must be some reason the people who make music software think that people who make music would want them?
  2. How about this: If I download the most recent version of Logic that allowed Logic to slave to MIDI clock (Logic 7?), would I be able to record my audio and midi files, and then open them up on Logic X? Would the tempo information remain in tact? If so, does anyone know the exact version of Logic which was the last to have this feature, and where one can go to download it? (Is it still in the Apple App Store?)
  3. I'm not sure that my external hardware can't send MTC, although I am pretty sure most of my gear was produced before MTC was a thing. Some of my external hardware includes an Ensoniq ESQ1 synthesizer, a Yamaha RX7 drum machine, an Alesis HR16 drum machine, a Korg Electribe, and a Roland MC500 sequencer. I am trying to put all my old sequences on my DAW now, which has prompted me to post this question. The Electribe sequences in particular would benefit from slaving Logic, because there are lots of tempo changes. But even when using Logic as master, I am having a lot of problems getting it all synced up. It's weird that all the money and technology that goes into a laptop computer and top of the line Digital Audio Workstation can't handle this simple problem, and all my clunky gear from the 1980's and 90's syncs up with each other perfectly fine. Are there any DAWs that are more user friendly for syncing up with external gear? I'm starting to think Logic just isn't made for that at all. Is that why all the music on the radio is so digital sounding? Vintage, analog gear is simply not compatible with modern studio recording software?
  4. So what is the difference between MTC and an external MIDI clock? Can I convert external MIDI clock into MTC somehow?
  5. Logic does a fine job of receiving MIDI note and controller information from my hardware devices, but I've never been able to get it to sync to an external clock. I'm running Logig Pro X now, and I had the same problem with Logic Pro 8. The problem is, when I start the external devices, Logic just sits there as though it never received a start signal. When I change the BPMs on the external devices, the tempo on Logic stays the same. It seems to not be receiving any midi time data at all, only note and controller changes. I have no idea why these photos are humongous; they are just images from my phone. I don't know how to make them smaller. Also, they posted in the opposite order I uploaded them, but that doesn't make much difference. Technology hates me right now. I've checked and unchecked every combination of boxes I can think of in the settings menus to no avail. I'm not sure if my M-Audio ProFire 610 audio interface might be the culprit. Setting "standalone mode" to external - s/pdif, and "hosted mode" sync source to "internal" seems to be the only combination that transmits midi data and makes sound. More check boxes that don't seem to have any effect on the problem one way or the other. Maybe if I knew what any of this actually meant, I could get the right combination. One of the suggestions in the Logic "Help" menu for external synchronization is to create an instrument track, option click on the track icon, and select "MTC" from the "Other" menu. But there is no MTC icon in the Other menu! Surely they are toying with me at this point.
  6. Thanks, that did the trick. I wonder why they made "up" mod the volume *lower* as it goes up the keys. Seems counter intuitive. I didn't notice with just one mod, but two and it makes a huge difference.
  7. I'm still using Logic Pro 8. What I want to know is whether there is a way to assign amplitude to track the keyboard in the EXS24 sampler? My problem is, I have the "Key" knob turned up about 30% on the filter, which is what I want, because I want the lower notes to be darker and the higher notes to be brighter on my string sample. The only issue is that, with the harmonics removed, the lowest couple of octaves are almost inaudible-- the tone is perfect, but the volume is too quiet. So I went down to the mod section, and I picked "Dest" and assigned it to "Volume," then "Src" and assigned it to "Key." Then I grabbed the little green triangle and drug it alll the way down. I thought that this would make the keys quieter as I went up the keyboard and quieter as I went down. Instead, it had no effect at all. What am I doing wrong? I also tried Dest: Relative Volume and Dest: Relative Volume (auto adjust), but these changed the volume of keys I was already holding down every time I hit a new note. I don't want that, I just want to compensate for the keyboard tracking filter with an inverse ratio keyboard tracking volume.
  8. Hi, I just stumbled upon this thread, and I see it is kind of old. But I wonder if anybody ever perfected the sostenuto environment. I downloaded the version posted here, and couldn't get it to work. I love the idea of it, though. I wish Logic's sampler and softsynths came with sostenuto inbuilt, as other piano software does.
  9. Is there a way to turn the sustain on and off without using a foot pedal, such as a key command, or clicking on some designated menu with the mouse?
  10. I use a Behringer FCB1010 midi foot controller, which has two expression pedals, each of which can be assigned to any controller value. When I assign the pedal to CC# 64, the General Midi value designated for sustain pedals, it appears to affect all incoming midi information, but I'm not sure exactly how. What it seems to do is to prevent Logic from responding to all "note off" controls while the pedal is down, and then when the pedal is released, it sends "note off" controls simultaneously for all of the notes being played. Is that accurate? If so, I'd be interested to know in more detail exactly what is going on. Is the sustain pedal an object in the environment window? (I am still sketchy on how the environment window works). What controller value is designated as "off" for the sustain pedal, and at what value does it turn "on?" Thanks, I know it's kind of a basic question, but I couldn't find the answer in the manual.
  11. If I have plugins in Logic for Windows, but they are all exe files, is there any way to transfer them to Logic on a Mac, using a Mac OSx?
  12. I am using Logic 8. I have about 70 instruments split up into 4 separate busses. I want to mix those busses down as audio files so I can delete the original tracks and not overload the computer when I play my song. But, when I create an audio track and set one of the busses as the input, for some reason it automatically lifts the gain of the bus up to zero, and the track reds out causing lots of nasty digital distortion. Adjusting the volume on the audio track has absolutely no effect. Adjusting the volume on the bus has no effect either. How do I adjust the input volume on the track? Do I have to go back to all 70 tracks and adjust the volume at which they are outputting to the bus?
  13. Thanks, George. I didn't know about the import feature. I am using logic as backing tracks, but the problem with mixing it down is that I want the various tracks to play out of different outputs, so that my bass lines go to my bass amp, my drums and vocals go straight to the pa, but so that I can still adjust the levels between the two, etc. You did give me an idea though.. If I record my tracks with the plugins as new audio files then I could lose the plugins and that would probably be a lot easier on the computer, and might help with latency issues and some of my other malfunctions. I'll have to look into mainstage too, I didn't know about that either. I'm new to computer recording.. It's strange how some things are so much easier than on the old school stand alone gear but then the simplest things are sometimes so difficult, lol.. Most stand alone sequencers have a built in function to chain finished projects together. Obviously Logic is more than just a sequencer though.. Lol.
  14. So I've spent hours and hours meticulously cutting and pasting tracks one after the other, saving each plugin setting for each track as a different file, so that when I paste the data onto the new file (because it just puts everything onto a blank general midi file for some reason) I can rebuild each original track piecemail. But about every five hours worth of work, Logic will completely glitch out. Earlier tracks will lose their plugins. Some will switch to bypass for no apparent reason. Ultrabeat schitzes out. There has got to be an easier way. Does anybody know? I just want to chain my songs together, so that when one ends, the next one starts. If one ends on measure 97, I want the next one to start on 98. Is there any way to do that, and if not is there any way to make a duplicate track from one file to another so I can copy and paste all my plugins at once?
  15. I figured out what was messing up my ES2 synth. I had it modded by a side chain and didn't fix it in the new file. Dunno what's up w ultrabeat though.
