  1. So what would the word be if you had a LiquidMix and a Interface hanging off of Firewire with intention of running at 96/24. Is it reasonable to connect a FW HD as well?? Or perhaps the USB drive could act as a system drive while I stream to the iMac's internal HD. I have some MIDI gear, intend on using some soft synths, and some live recording. Also intend to run Eastwest's Symphonic Orchestra Gold (16 bit version) I considered of attatching a drive to Ethernet, but the research I've done seems to reveal it's much slower even the 1000Mbs is faster the Firewires 800.... I don't get it.
  2. An example of features that are sometimes not apparent is Logic's "Spot" Command... I believe that's what ProTools users call it. For years ProTool users used to bitch about not having that feature. But it was there all along.... It was just called "Pick Up Clock" and was only available as a key Command. Not it's available on the toolbar as well. Audio Stretch/Compress on the Arrange was there since version 7.1 or 7.2 I forget which. But basically it means it was there for like 3 years, but no one ever really knew about that either. Now it's a highly publicised feature. Logic is a deep a, and probably to a fault. It does need to work on the way it delivers alot of it's features purely on a practical and usability sense. It also needs to work on it's PR in informing people more of it's deeper features. But I believe Apple will be remedying alot of things with it's next major update. And I believe it's that version that will be the much fabled "ProTools Killer"
  3. I was reeading a recent article in Sound On Sound mag, and discovered that Lily Allen's co-writer/producer/record engineer pretty much did her recent album almost exclusively in Logic. That's not the only time I've heard that too. Logic is quite powerful and can provide you with the tools to produce some kick-ass recordings. It's just that somethings in Logic are in dire need of a major update to streamline workflow and maybe have a few plugins tweaked to conform with the needs of today. but it is certainly VERY capable. the rest of the world just haven't really caught onto that fact.ProTools ISN'T necessary these days, but it does make recording bands easier. While Logic makes songwriting and producing alot easier.
  4. I don't know of any, but there are a few Garagband ones out there which you can import into Logic. Namely Nine Inch Nails and Fallout Boys are the only ones I know of, but I am sure there are others. You may have to pay a small amount for some.
  5. I personally would wait until Snow Leopard is out. Then I would wait for the next version of Logic, because the application needs to be programmed correctly in order to take advantage of the GPU. I don't think they will be shy in saying how it can utilise your GPU as well, because that's a big selling point. And after those two things are in place, you would need to have a compatible graphics card that is capable of taking advantage of Open CL as well... in the way Apple needs it too. So my suggestion would be to hold off until you can meet all the above criteria. It could end up saving you money in the end from making a bad purchase.
  6. Logic 8 files is actually a container format. It's really a folder in disguise. I believe this is your problem. So you may have to "Archive" it first, then you should be able to attach it.
  7. Glad you found a solution Best luck with your endeavours.
  8. • Try surfing through the Channels Strips or the ES2 presets for Sequence Elements. • Find a good computer sound as a starting point • Adjust the sound to taste. You can even consider putting the Bit Crusher on it or some kind of distortion. • Create a sequence Pattern by playing it in. if you can't play it fast enough, try playing it more slowly time then Option Drag the MIDI region in the Arrange inward to half the the time and speed it up. You can also right it in manually in the MIDI Editor, or use a simple delay to double the note you play. Which ever way you chose it may take some practice to get it right. • Quantise the pattern and it's dynamics to taste. but it should perhaps be 100% because it is a computer you're trying to imitate after all. Adversely you could try quantising it by using a Groove Quantise and get a copy of one of the early MPC patterns or something similar. You could probably find it on this site in the File Sharing section. Doing this might help the sequence to sound more 80s retro computer. That might be what you want. • Apply the sequence where you want it throughout the song where you want it by copy and pasting, or using Aliases... and your done Hope this a little bit more what you are after.
  9. In the Bin there should be a little arrow just to the left of the little file previews, this can be clicked like in the Mac OS. If this little arrow is pointing right, then it is closed, if it is pointing down it is opened. What you are seeing if it is "opened" is the different references to the same master audio file. Those references are called regions and are all pointing to the same ONE file. that file is at the top of the list or other files, with the arrow next to it. In the Arrange area when you cut or copy regions, you are really creating a new reference to the same file, in just the same fashion that you have mentioned. And as the guys have sad unless you are editing in the Sample Editor, or perhaps turning regions to new Audio files, then the real file is still there. By dragging the bottom left or bottom right of the region, depending on what you have done in your edits. You can still extend the region to reveal the rest of the original Audio file. It sounds to me by what's in your Bin you might still have the Originals. Read the manual it should explain things better.
  10. So I take it that you are using the "Bounce" option in Logic. If you Export Tracks the Volume is always set at Nominal, which some people have a problems with.
  11. David makes a very good point too. I can't believe I didn't see that. However, some rooms that are not effectively treated can tend to blur the accuracy of the stereo image coming from the speakers making the stereo image hard to judge. You can always get yourself a good pair of headphones to help you out with judging your stereo field. Your ears ARE more important for judging sound. Use the meters only as a reference .
  12. • Try one of those old Modem noises, the kind it makes while connecting with the server. • Try a plugin that emulates the SID chip found in the old Commodore 64. • How about using the Bitcrusher plugin across an instrument, to really reduce it's quality and invoke the feel of old computer music. • Alerts & Beeps from the Operating System • You can Robotize a voice with the Vocal Transformer Plugin. Also Edit the source wave so that the audio glitches a little and there is a constant timing & rhythm with the voice (like an electronic voice) • Use synth arpeggiated sequences and bleeps • Try the Ringshifter plugin on something • Sample the voices of PC & Mac from the Apple ads!!!
  13. In the Project Settings, Under the MIDI option there is a preference to set the "Scrubbing with Audio in the Arrange" - try selecting that. I think you might need the Play/Pause enabled to scrub, but I think this method should work for you. Have a play around with it. Hope this helps.
