  1. I have a brand new mac book pro running lion with Logic 9.1.6. And I know it should work by default but it doesn't. I also wanted to set a key command in my piano roll for (select equal events) like I had on my old computer, but there is no option for it under the key commands. Any suggestions to sort this out?
  2. Hey whats up, I've been having some issues setting my key commands correctly. I want to set my space bar to play/stop. I go to the key preferences screen and hit learn new assignment and proceed to hit the space bar. The only problem is when I hit it the screen flashes white (which is what happens when you hit something that has no command assigned to it), but it does not recognize me hitting the key. This same scenario is true with a couple other commands as well, how can I fix it.
  3. Hey whats up, Let me quickly explain my situation. I recently moved from a 21 inch iMac to a 13 inch Mac Book Pro. One thing about Logic is that the screen is inherently smaller. I used to be able to split the screen pretty much 50/50 on my iMac with the arrange window on the top and the mixer on the bottom. Now its not even close. I pretty much have to drag the middle point up or down depending on wether or not I'm using the mixer or the arrange window. It's not a huge deal, but as some one who is really big on work flow and making things quick and easy, it has been quite annoying. I decided to hook my laptop up to my 40 inch tv with the hopes of fixing this issue. The only thing is, when it's on the big screen, it is just a bigger version of what I already have (obviously). I was hoping there was some way I could adjust the settings to make the screen size bigger in Logic, even if it does not look correct on my laptop because I will almost always have it running through my TV. The display settings in preferences offered no real solutions, and honestly I'm not sure if there is one. I was hoping someone on here might have some suggestions for me. Any responses are appreciated, thanks in advance. I am running Logic 9.1.6
  4. Hey whats up people, I just got my Logic 9 up and running in Logic on my mac book pro running Lion. I realized when I try to use certain key commands there is almost like a quick flashing of white light and nothing happens. I have never seen this before and am curious what it means and how I can get my key commands to work. Any help or advice is appreciated, thanks!
  5. Hey, So I just got a brand new Mac Book Pro running Lion and was extremely excited to get back to making music, but of course it couldn't be that easy. At first I was having trouble installing Logic, it would get to almost the end of the installation and than say "installation failed." Quite frustrated I did a search and found this is a pretty common problem installing Logic 9 on Lion and that there is no "real clear-cut solution." One person I saw said after the installation failed, they just did the software update on their computer and got Logic to work. So I went ahead and did the software update, and it appeared that Logic had now been "fully installed," but of course I had to put in my serial number before running the actual program. For some reason though I keep getting the error message that I have an "invalid serial number." I don't why this would be, so again I did another search online and found this is a problem when doing the software update with Logic 9. Now I am really stuck and have not been able to find a solution. I went to the support site Apple has (I posed the link at the bottom), and followed all the steps on there with no luck. Somebody please help me out, I'm extremely frustrated. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2005
  6. Not necessarily true. I also made all these tracks available via soundcloud so they are easier to check out, hopefully this will get a couple more people to listen and throw in their input.
  7. I'm really hungry to improve my mixing and be able to make my music knock on a professional, industry level. I have been working hard almost every day for over a year now and I have definitely improved my mixes in this time, but they are nowhere near where they need to be. My main issue is getting things to sound warm and big, especially the low end. I’m using Logic 9 as well as the waves mercury bundle. Briefly, my general process is this: Eq and compress each drum sound individually, bus compress all the drums together with some light compression. Next I will eq and compress the bassline, sample, any other instruments in order from most important to least important. Then I apply reverb to my snare and maybe a few instruments. I then use an imager to try and place each instrument in the stereo field. Finally I will parallel compress my drums and bassline to try and get them to sound bigger. Finally, I’ll put a limiter on the stereo out and set it to taste. My main issue with my mixes is the low and end and getting things to sound big and warm. I make it a point to spend a lot of time eqing the bass and the kick to get it to sound right, but even when it sounds ok on my monitors, it sounds faint and distant in the car and other stereo’s. I’m using the KRK’s which I’m sure are not the best monitors but I know a few of my favorite producers use them and in my eyes if they can get there music to knock the way they can mixing on the KRK’s, I should be able to as well. Another thing that has been bothering me my with my mixes is just the overall loudness of them. Even when I mix and apply a limiter set at 0db, my mixes don’t sound nearly as loud as industry level stuff. A lot of times even, the limiter will kill the low end of the beat, even if it boosts the overall signal a little bit. I have recently been studying mixes from my favorite producers, and even putting them in a frequency analyzer to see what they look like. I don’t know if anyone is similar with the producer illmind, but he recently released, along with his instrumental album, all of the sounds he used for the album. One thing I realized when studying these sounds in the frequency analyzer, they all are well below 0 db, yet sound incredibly loud. When I mix and eq things, my sounds will almost always be peaking over 0db (at which point I just turn them down on the fader), but at a certain point, they loose their warmth in a way, its hard to explain. I’ve had some people tell me it’s because I don’t have the “big” studio hardware, but I don’t buy that for a second. I’m sure that stuff helps, but I can name a couple of my favorite producers who have said in interviews that they use nothing more than pro tools and the waves plugins to mix their stuff. Also, it’s always the brain behind the music and not the equipment, which makes the most difference. I’m just saying this to preface any body who wants to say “its just the expensive hardware that makes a difference,” because I know its not. Anyway I just wanted to post up some of my mixes, explain what I have been doing and what I am trying to do with the hopes of getting more opinions and input and how I (as well as everyone reading this) can improve their mixing. Please be harsh about anything I’ve said as well as my mixes, I just want to improve. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks for your time. http://www.sendspace.com/file/n058bh Here is a zip file with the three most recent beats I mixed
  8. I know there is no right answer, my question mainly concerns where to you place each in the mix chain. For example, do you put the eq first, therefore compressing the eq'd sound? Or do you put the compressor first, therefore eq'ing the compressed sound, and the compressor does not react to the eq you boost or cut. What do most pro level engineers do? What are the advantages to one over the other. As always, any mixing questions are pretty open ended. Just curious about your opinions, thanks!
  9. Clearly the answer to this question is practice, but I'm trying to get a little more specific so I can work hard as well as smart. I'm not worried as much with being able to sit down and play a piece of already composed music from a sheet. As a producer, I create my music mostly just from jamming and improvising. I guess my main concern is being able to go up and down the scales with ease and be able to freestyle better chord progressions in the moment. I feel like just sitting in front of the keyboard replaying other music from a piece of paper is not necessarily the best way to learn what I want to do. I have a basic knowledge of music theory (major, minor scales. basic chords). I really want to be able to take it to the next level. Any advice on how or what I should be practicing. Any good programs or books out there that might help me accomplish what I want to do? Also, if you think I'm completely wrong about my approach and should be sitting here learning sheet music, let me know! I'm just trying to open myself up to new and better ways of learning, any help or advice is appreciated, thanks!
  10. I'm trying to make the first 4 bars of my song one tempo and then the rest another tempo. Basically I want my intro to play at 84 then on the 5th bar, switch to 87. I was wondering what the best or easiest way to do this was? Any advice or help is appreciated, thanks!
  11. Hey whats up people, So I am using Logic 9 and Battery 3 to produce. I've been using this combo for a while with no major issues until a few days ago. Suddenly, whenever I try to do anything (such as lay down a simple drum pattern) Logic will hiccup, or freeze for a second, and it has crashed a few times also. I noticed the cpu meter at the bottom is constantly staying up a few notches even when I do nothing. When I play a kick/snare combo it shoots almost all the way up. My first thought was to free up some room on my computer. I went through and deleted tons of stuff I didn't need and opened up at least 20 gigs worth of room. But the same thing is still happening? Any solutions or ways around it? I can't figure out why this would start suddenly happening when nothing major changed. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated, thanks!
  12. wow, I can see some people have strong opinions on the topic lol
  13. I was in the studio with an engineer earlier today and he was showing me some tricks. I mentioned that I mix everything in Logic and he told me that I should always mix in Pro Tools because it gives you a "truer" sound. He was saying Logic already has some like Limiters and different things built in that you can't turn off. The point being it might sound a little better in Logic but in reality it does not sound as good. I've never heard this before, just wanted to know what you guys thought. Is there any truth to this?
