  1. i always mixed in my sennheiser hd270's and was reluctant to invest in studio monitors as i had no acoustically suitable room to monitor in. What i can say is this, that even in a relatively boxy room with no acoustic treatment i still get better mixes now that i have monitors. I check in the cans as i go along (as i know them very well now im able to read them quite well) and i always put mixes on my iphone, car radio and hifi too. Cheers DaveyBee
  2. Sleaze, this had never occurred to me! why is that? If i bounce a track or a collection of tracks to audio am i automatically passing through the inserts etc of the stereo out? i always assumed this was bypassed in the bounce. Oops. DaveyBee
  3. I know this is an old thread now but i have to say this discussion gave me immense joy! It reminded of all those little discussions (arguments) i used to have with musical chums about dream theatre and peter gabriel (or sting for that matter). can i just offer my total agreement with Ski though - it's definitely 4+4+4+6! Thank you for what turned out to be a little snippet of fun in an otherwise totally boring night shift at work. DaveyBee
  4. Hallo Jeff, not that it will help very much but i was a cubase user in the 90's and early 00's. then stopped recording for a while and got back to it about 3 years ago when i got an imac. i've been using Logic since then and absolutely would not go back. I know i'm comparing oranges and apples because cubase in the 90's is obviously going to be poor compared to Logic now. but i love logic - it's so quick to get ideas down, the channel strip settings are great, the bundled software is superb etc etc (all been said before). i dont use the apple loops at all and found the additional content a bit of a waste of space but thats just down to the way i use logic (generally for tracking guitars, bass, drums from kontakt, vocals, keyboards etc). One last thing - the general consensus is that with the way Apple are now using the app store the next version of logic will be a flat fee of 199 or thereabouts and wont be available as an upgrade - so is now the right time to buy logic 9? Its all conjecture of course but something to bear in mind. Cheers David.
  5. is Em-G-Bm not more likely to be in D/Bm? If it's in G then its progression is vi-I-iii, whereas in D/Bm its ii-IV-vi. I think the latter is more likely. peace db that said - the three major chords of E G B are actually quite good together - i think the end of Yes' Starship Trooper repeats this progression about 3000 times. But I'll shush now before i end up looking like a boring old fa.... oh, too late!
  6. I'll answer you tomorrow. U seem to have gone nearly all the way there but are still missing something. I'm looking at this on my iPhone (how did I get an email about this? Cool). This wee note is just to let you know I'll be thinking about and try to help you out soon Cheers db
  7. Taylor... nice! I have a lowden that i simply adore... Are the electrics simply DI'ed or whats going on there? With regard to the synths, have you played around with other patches there, because although i feel they're a bit overpowering at their current level, i also feel they're the wrong sound - they colour in the spaces alright but the end result is sort of popfluff rather than the more rootsy-folk-rock-thing the singer has going for him. I'm trying to remember who i listened too recently on bandcamp who were predominantly electric and acoustic but who used synth pads to fill out the sound really subtly... it might have been Josh & Mer, but i cant remember yes, i've just checked it, josh and mer 'planet music' - home recorded album but you really cant tell. Have a listen. Cheers db
  8. the positives - great song, excellent voice (you lucky sod). the suggestions i have - i'm really not going for the synth parts you added. i think you were going for extra vitality or something in the choruses - something to set them apart and bring it all up a notch? - but the synth part seems incongruent to the rest of the song, almost too poppy. The guitars aren't really coming to life enough for me either. the one in the right channel is a little soft and muddy. The intro is a little long i think - i can see where you heading with it, letting the intro build slowly so that when the kick comes in we're rocking with you - but i'd almost be inclined to start at that point and play around with the other instruments more. I hope i dont sound overly critical, it is a great wee song, but i also think the best thing about this forum is getting entirely impartial feedback. cheers db
  9. it's funny how we all tend to 'play up' our own main instrument! You're a drummer so the drums are a big part of the track. I play guitar so i tend to mix them really loud and put 50 of them on one song (well, ok, slight exaggeration - but you get the idea). I've been working loads the last week and haven't checked into the board in a while but i'm gonna check out the bandcamp link tomorrow. Cheers db
  10. Have been a little busy recently and have only just popped back to see how y'all are doing. Thanks very much for the advice, especially Ski. Makes perfect sense and i appreciate the extent to which you replied so fully! Actually, in the days since posting this i had started two songs proper and relatively quickly realised that trying to make the songs sound similar only made them, well, too similar. So i ditched the idea. I do have loads of channel strips set up and saved that i can refer back to but am in some ways relieved that my idea was way off the mark. Just to clarify one point - i wasn't ever intending to master anything myself, but i didn't make that clear. Cheers db
  11. I really like the song and the sounds that you've picked for everything. My only reservation is actually not to do with the song itself but the genre it sits in - the drums, which are very well done, are just too busy for me. This is a matter of personal taste and it in no way is meant as a criticism of what you've created. My untrained and mostly deaf ears are finding hard to pick out the beat in the 7/8 measures where the drums are going bickies and i was really relying on the guitar (is it a guitar or a keyboard?) motif at that point to guide me through. That said, i've listened to it three times now and am liking it more and more with each listen. ooh - just realised there's loads more too - loving track 2. cheers db
  12. Hello all, I've recorded about 40 or 50 demos over the last two years - usually very quickly - and there is now about 10 of those that i wish to re-record and put together as an album. I have set up a template that includes what i think is my most practical setup but i havent used channel strips at all. So the templates include only the track names, busses for instrument groups etc, two instances of kontakt for piano and drums. I'm not sure if i should setup the channel strips for acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar in terms of compression, eq etc. What i'm thinking is that i want to create a collection of songs that have a similar sound so that they sit well together as an album, but when i'm recording demos i usually start from scratch and let the songs develop their own sound. If i were recording in a high end studio with good spaces and outboard i'm imagining most of the channel strips would include the same gear, not the seemingly vast array of different plugins that are available to us now. So, should i pick one piano sample set i like, one acoustic guitar channel strip for finger picked stuff, one for strummed etc one channel strip for bass guitar, one for snare, kick etc etc. and then tweak those as necessary to create the best sounds for each song or is this idea in someway limiting the options available and should i just let the mix and mastering processes take care of creating the overall sound? If this makes no sense then i apologise as i'm struggling a little bit to explain what i mean... Cheers db
  13. by way of balance... http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/03/07/guest_post_joseph_kony_is_not_in_uganda_and_other_complicated_things#.T1pOg4FakXQ.facebook and this http://jezebel.com/5891269/think-twice-before-donating-to-kony-2012-the-meme-du-jour i have to be honest and say that i havent made up my mind on this campaign yet, but i believe that blind faith in a viral campaign in this media savvy age is a dangerous thing. peace db
