  1. Could very much be the guitar. If you move the guitar around, does it get any better or worse? Guitar pickups don't just pickup what you play; they pick up a ton of the background electronic noises (such as when you're Macbook is plugged in; creates more noise and the guitar picks that up) I really noticed this when I moved into an older apartment where the wiring wasn't as great and I was able to hear what the neighbors were watching on TV As for getting rid of it...it can be kind of tricky. If you can tune Logic's DeNoiser plug-in just right it can at least tame it. There is the Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger pedal which I've used and is alright; can sometimes make distortion tones sound metallic My preferred method is Izotope RX. The Dialogue Denoiser is a blessing.
  2. You can just use Logic's Multimeter plug-in Alternatively, you could put Logic's EQ after the Renaissance EQ, don't alter anything, but just turn on the analyzation An alternative and free plug-in is Voxengo Span http://www.voxengo.com/product/span/ I prefer the layout of Span personally
  3. Well, luckily I went with the option that gave me the 90-day warranty since I have to wait until I get back home (currently on vacation) Just tried a few more applications Internet browsers, iTunes, Mail, and Sibelius 7 haven't given me any problems Tried out a light game and that gave me issues, but didn't lock the computer up ...quite the pain in the rear
  4. So luckily this hasn't happened on my main iMac but I'm currently on vacation and it happens on my 2011 MacBook Pro (2 GHz Intel i7, 16GB RAM) So I recently had to take the MacBook into the Apple Store to get the graphics card replaced, which they also had to replace the logic board to get to (thank goodness for the Apple Repair Program they initiated for my model; $600 worth of work for free) However when I open either Logic 9 or X, the screen/graphics on my computer go crazy (flashes, streaks, screen splitting in half on opposite sides, static, etc.), will lockup and then require a hard shutdown and reboot Now, generally I would take it back to the Apple Store and complain but it only happens when running Logic; no other apps cause this problem I uninstalled X and reinstalled but still have the problem and then tried 9. So my best guess is that they are both accessing the same thing that is causing my computer to freak out Any suggestions?
  5. That sucks to hear I have a backup drive for my computer and another just for my RAID 0 array Can't imagine the pain of having to go sort that out without a backup And I understand not wanting to sacrifice the speed! around 700 MB/s Speed will spoil you. Recently needed to backup my laptop which is USB 2, onto a USB 2 drive...beard probably grew an inch by the time it was done
  6. Well, it was a very (mentally) long summer semester at school and before I headed back home for a 3 week vacation, and thus 3 weeks away from my studio, I pushed out another song! A little ambient/post-rock piece Hope you enjoy!
  7. $3.95!?!?! That's the book we use in my Tonal harmony class at Berklee and it can cost up to $150+ (for new, used around $40) $3.95 is a hell of a deal!
  8. I have their (very similar) Thunderbay 4 and efiebke nailed it with the fan You get used to it pretty fast though The only real complaint I have with it is that the front grill sometimes vibrates and makes a scratching noise Hasn't done any damaged but gave me a panic attack
  9. Take it to the Apple Store and they can test it to see if it's the graphics issue (also, be sure to tell them you about the repair program ) Mine worked great for a while and then one day the screen just went black When I booted it, the pixels looked all messed up and and it would freeze constantly Took it in to the Apple Store, they replaced the graphics card AND the logic board for free (which would of cost me over $600) Left it with them and got it back 2 days later with a 90-day warranty, works better than ever
  10. Yeah, you go probably google "book name pdf" I just use imslp.org because they have just a huge resource of scores and books that are public domain (Korsakov's Principles or Orchestration, Berlioz's Treatise on Instrumentation, Tchaikovsky's Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony, etc.) as well as discover some other books too
  11. I haven't read the Tchaikovsky one, but now that it is on public domain... 2 books that I have read that have helped immensely were Arnold Schoenberg's "Structural Functions of Harmony" and "The Chord Scale Theory and Jazz Harmony" by Barrie Nettles and Richard Graf One more classical based, the other modern As for relevance today, mainly in regards to the "not-to-do" rules, it isn't really relevant today as "rules"...music shouldn't have any "rules." I mean, any rock or metal song is for the most part full of parallel fifths That said, practicing some of those "rules" can be very helpful and should be practiced because the different voice leadings, doublings, motions, etc. can create unique colors that are often overlooked today. Just don't feel you must be "bound" by them In my current studies I have Jazz Harmony followed immediately by Tonal (classical) Harmony and the in the modern jazz harmony we've never once cared about parallel fifths or proper doublings. Inversions are very rare in that class as well meanwhile right after in classical harmony it's almost nothing BUT inversions, doublings, and spacing rules The simple rule: If it sounds good to you, than it's good
  12. For delay I use either the Logic delays or Native Instruments Replika However, for reverb, it is always QL Spaces It's not the most "editable" reverb but there are plenty of presets and they sound GREAT I've used it on just about every song after I bought it; orchestral, rock, electronic, etc.
  13. If you decide on that, I HIGHLY recommend becoming part of the soundsonline-forums.com community Super helpful people there and you can learn a lot, plus if you need support they seem to respond much faster there than actually doing a support ticket
  14. Yes, that's the one It has all the instrument families When you click on the "instruments" tab, above where it says "18 Violins" you can see different tabs for brass, winds, and percussion Also, it says under "silver" that the silver version of the library comes with a bit of choir sounds; note that with the silver version, the other instruments you don't get nearly as many articulations Gold and Platinum versions come with all the listed articulations, the only difference is that Platinum includes 2 extra mic positions you can load which can drastically alter the sound of each instrument, as well as 24-bit samples instead of 16-bit (but that doesn't really change the actual quality of the sound)
  15. Nah, you've USED 180.71 GB so far; 318.54GB free With those specs, if you choose East/West, get Symphonic Orchestra Anything from the Hollywood Series will be far too taxing on your machine Still a fantastic library though; I still use it alongside some of the Hollywood series all the time
