  1. Hitem True, Hmmm — Given my limited knowledge of working with the EXS24, probably I'm not explaining this well. I think that's on a level more complex than the fairly simple task I'm doing within Piano Roll. I'm working with events that are already assigned to zones in an existing EXS instrument. But this may come in handy if I try applying this in a more elaborate arrangement (more than just this simple triad). It's certainly worth trying, and it'll help me learn better all of what's going on inside there. So thank you.
  2. From within Piano Roll (or other resources such as Step Editor, Event List, MIDI Transform), can I designate a pan assignment for individual events? I haven't seen anything that seems likely to do the trick. Maybe I'm just overlooking a sub-menu or an obscure command? Here's an example of what DOES work for, say, a simple tympani part often using an expected triad. I'd like all Eb at hard left, all G center, all Bb hard right. I create the MIDI region and perform it all in EXS24. I make two additional tracks, assigning each of the three as L, C, and R. Option-drag creates three identical regions. Then I select and mute all G and Bb events in track 1 at hard left, likewise for track 2 center for all Eb and Bb, track 3 hard right for all Eb and G. This creates exactly the effect I want, of course; would anyone recommend a more efficient way for when things become more involved? Or just an alternative technique — always good to know, for whatever may come up. Say, I may want a sudden brief rapid sequence alternating within a different pan range (say, 0 to +30), or I need to add a couple of new pitches and I'd like them assigned differently. IF I CAN do this right there in Piano Roll with just those half-dozen 8th-notes, that seems likely easier than writing in the automation data. (It depends on the specifics, of course.) = = = = = = = Finally, I'm finding I could use some systematic instruction in MIDI commands and/or these tools. YouTube's loaded with them, of course, but I'd welcome knowledgeable referrals from anyone who's found any series in particular that are consistently well-designed and well-produced (not a lot of rambling, has a good balance of background info without going off on tangents, etc.) Thank you.
  3. David, thanks very much. That certainly covers it. I can only infer that 10.9 wiped all the other Loops, for whatever programming reason. At least the fresh install will take care of it. Much appreciated!
  4. It's a complicated story as to why, but basically since I can't run my old faithful Logic 8 on my new MBP with 10.9, I need to exclude Logic 8's 39GB of loops from a new installation. (I got that 39GB figure from http://support.apple.com/kb/SP533). Even doing a search for .caf files and for "Jam Pack," I can find only 518MB in chuck/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/GarageBand (and) iLife. Those appear in Logic's Loops browser as 1625 items. b]Where's everything else?[/b] This old page, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1045 (referring to Logic 7) mentions only the path I already cited. It's the only response I found when googling "Logic 8 install loops where." So: Where did Logic install them, or what's happened to them in 10.9? If it helps: originally I installed from the DVDs on a late '08 MBP with Leopard, I think—I'm really not sure. Logic survived a restore to Snow Leopard and then Mtn Lion on the same machine. Now having restored everything onto the new MBP, I don't find them. Did 10.9 hide them somewhere else? Many thanks.
  5. Obviously I didn't go far enough to the right on the keyboard. Dope-slap duly administered. Thanks.
  6. Brushing up on key commands, I found this shift-something assigned to "Play from selection." Maybe I entered it myself from some tutorial, but I don't recognize it -- looks like the control arrow pointing up to a hyphen on top. I've tried holding the shift key and hitting each key one by one. Can't find it. Wot th' ---- IS it? You won't need to dope-slap me when the answer becomes obvious. I'll take care of that myself. Thanks. c
  7. At first I thought, "Huh, looks pretty normal to me" but being up at three a.m. probably distorted my perceptual framework . . . Finally it registered what was going on -- cool, cool, cool. And the good part is that yeah, the trick fits the song, enhances it. Maybe especially so at 3:15 a.m. Thanks for the heads up. c
  8. AULooper doesn't look particularly complicated, but I can't figure out how to get STARTED -- how to get an initial signal. I don't see where to import/trigger anything. I've tried drag-drop, no luck. But I can't find ANY documentation in the reference, nor on Apple's forums, nor via Google. Let me check one fundamental: I access it as I/O > Stereo > AU MIDI controlled FX > Core Audio > AULooper. Anybody know of any documentation or tutorials? Or just drop a few basic pointers. Spare change . . . Thanks, cb

  10. These are great, David. Thanks much for the preview.
  11. I'm having this problem on an iBook G4 (no problem on the iMac). XS Key's maybe 10 months old. However, my mouse has no problem in the same USB slot. Go figure. cb
  12. Thanks, as I wasn't aware of this. It tells me my XS Key is fully functional. I'd asked about this at an Apple Store a couple of weeks ago when it had happened only two or three times over a week, and they suggested it could be the USB itself (BUT the slot works fine with my mouse, so, ehhh, who knows). I have an appointment tomorrow now that it's gotten worse. At least it's good to rule out the update as I go in to ask again. Thanks, cb
  13. I'll insert the key, get the program up and running, work a few minutes, all's cool. And suddenly, apparently as a result of shifting barometric pressure or perhaps jupiterbecoming disaligned from Mars, "QUIT. Your XS Key has been removed." Heh. It's still there. I quit, move it to another USB slot and something comparable happens, usually within 2-3 minutes. But sometimes it won't evenlet me get past the opening credits. Fortunatley I have some projects I started in LE and they remain purely LE tools and techniques, so I can continie working with them. -- except for the fact that NOW Logic EXPRESS has taken to the occasional unpredictableshutdown! Is something contagious, flitting around with all those 0's and 1's? WHASSSAHAPPENNIN to my little iBook's brain place? And how can I get it fixed? Thank you.
