  1. I reccomend you visit: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/
  2. First thing that strikes me: It's so much cheaper, $499. That's a good deal. Nothing revolutionary from what I can see, but I'm glad they've got rid of the XS key, that's a good move. Also good that they've included STPro2, not sure about mainstage, like Rax perhaps? Looks interesting for live musicians. I'd need a new HD for all that content, but useful to have a proper sound library. I suppose it's difficult to make any conclusions without it in front of me, I suspect that there'll be some good improvements under the bonnet in terms of performance etc.
  3. Have a careful listen around the crossover (I think it's about 2.2Khz), I found it a bit muddy in this area, though perhaps no less so than the average hifi system.
  4. One thing I've never understood on this front: surely if you invert the phase of a signal the frequencies cancelled and boosted will depend on the amount of phase delay. how is it possible to invert the phase of a sound to achieve silence if it is not a cyclic waveform? eg if you phase invert a sinewave at 100hz I can see that all multiples of that frequency will be cancelled. but what about, say, the signal at 150 hz. given an equal amount of phase shift this will not be affected in the same way, will it?
  5. yes, it seems likely that something like that's going on doesn't it. i'm going to have a word with them,
  6. Took my macbook to be repaired and it's come back with a new logic board, but the battery won't charge. And, it's developed an issue with my 828. Every time I load an audio programme music will play through the 828 for around ten minutes. Then it will suddenly cut out. If I load logic it's less time. Even in iTunes tho it will play for a while then stop. What's wierd is that if I then load a different programme it will play again temporarily. I've had the motu for 3-4 years so it could be an issue with the unit's clocking or something. However, it seems unlikely. I also register an error when I run the apple hardware check, which, from google, seems to suggest a problem with either the logic board or the fan. As I've just had a new logic board in the fan seems more likely. Any thoughts? I'm
  7. Details at http://futuremusic.com/blog/?p=1828. It's only a week and seems not unlikely that a logic release is on the cards given the press release they sent out. So can we have an embargo on all rumours until then please?
  8. Ok, fine, David can we just amalgamate all the rumours into a single rolling logic rumour thread?
  9. Honestly, after all that hype surrounding the Aug 20th release, do you guys really think that any of these rumours are true? It's all rubbish of course. Nobody knows anything. If they did they wouldn't be posting it on forums. For every rumour (pro tools killer, new app, etc etc) there's been a counter rumour (logic 8, updates to es2 and instruments). Whilst it's sad that Apple have chosen not to make any announcements to prepare users for the transition, it's also not that surprising. That is just how they operate. It would be more frustrating if it was a Vista-style situation with the software and its features half-finished and previewed for over a year prior to release. Equally I think that we shouldn't be expecting anything huge to be hitting in the feature stakes. Yes it's been a while since the last upgrade, but I would posit this time has been divided between soundtrack pro, garageband and logic. Hence it may not be that revolutionary. I for one hope it isn't a 'reinvention of the wheel' as I like working with logic and have invested much time and effort getting to grips with it.
  10. Might be some bargains here http://www.unityaudio.co.uk/product.php?pid=266 under Dynaudio... I think I'm right in saying they have a pair of BM15As going for around 600 quid. A real bargain.
  11. Yes! It's suspicious. The early macbooks were shipped with faulty superdrives and logic boards apparently. Mine went down after a year. However it seems that apple are replacing it under warranty even though it was outside the 12 month period slightly so I'm not entirely put out. 1st generation apple products have a reputation for being a bit dodgy.
  12. I've tried the DAD tape sim and it's subtle to say the least. Wasn't that impressed. It very much depends what kind of effect you're looking for. If it's extreme saturation I'd stick to the Vintage Warmer, or alternatively try the airwindows plugs. They do some very affordable tape emulations, which don't do much in a time varying sense, but give a nice eq curve to the material.
  13. Here's my top 5 in order: 1. Powercore 01 - though I can't use it right now because of the lack of driver update, it's a dirty dirty synth. Sounds like an SH 101 convincingly. 2. Arturia Minimoog - still good for bass sounds, better than the modular imo, no patch on the real thing though. 3. Novation BassStation - not bad for sub bass sounds, fairly basic though. 4. NI Massive - the best software substitute for a Virus or Waldorf synth imo. 5. Gmedia Oddity - a classic soft synth. I haven't found a goto soft synth for bass and am looking to invest. Any suggestions?
  14. I picked up some dynaudio Bm6As on the basis that they are very flat over the full range of frequencies. I spent an afternoon a/bing them with KRK Rokits, Adam A7s and Mackie 828s. I personally find the Mackies fatiguing, as many do. The KRKs and the Adams both seemed to distort around the crossover frequency, whereas the Dyns maintained much smoother mids. Since using them for a while I've found that my mixes are much more interesting and full because I have the confidence to place things at specific points in the stereo image and to work with freqs below 120hz. When I play the mixes on hifis you lose some of this detail, but compared to other commercial mixes they now sound competitive. On the basis that you should always be checking your mixes against other tracks, my opinion is that the most revealing monitors are the best. There is just that moment with the Dyns which I don't get with other monitors where you feel like you're conducting an orchestra or a band, it's proper voodoo magic. I'd go for them every time.
  15. ... and not exs24, and not any fx on busses (afaik). if you rely on logic's built in processors such as the compressor and eq nodes can be useful, but I'm hoping they will make the functionality broader in the next release of logic.
