  1. TAB: L8, 4-6 strings L9, 3-16 strings! HUGE (i like to notate riff ideas.. might not revisit for a day.. or several years, and play 7-string guitar regularly) Chord Grids, unfortunately... (sigh). Maybe in another 3-16 years?
  2. LOL! Yeah, I did not see that! LOL! I looked at the two pics, and tried to figure it out..lol... The time sig stuff is varied, but seems to come back to time sigs exacerbating things. It is not only a time sig thing when it comes to many aspects, but it is the "anchor" (of sorts). I had a friend on Skype try to repro my vid, and he had it work fine! Sent me a Jing of it working, which made me think it was me. So, I deleted, cleaned, etc AGAIN. Fresh L9, not one scrap of Logic ever existing gone. Same exact thing happens. Wiping and reinstalling OSX at this point? Hehehehe.. Apple may force me into it with my trip to drop my MacBook Pro off for a list of fixes it needs (been waiting for them to pile up- lol). Basically, I was figuring that if this specific bug were fixed with L9, it would have been likely the root was repaired, and thus the tree now possibly healthy. Really wish ApplEmagic were more communicative. Gump Bar is not much help either. This forum has always been the lighthouse in a turbulent ocean. Bizarre.. lol... still laughing...
  3. Ahh.. does not quote pics. I guess that was a jab? (tried to PM, asking if it was.. sorry if I am clueless for that stuff. "Bug Tzar"? Whatever..) I was actually looking for a serious answer. Calling for tech support was not fun, and I have not found anyone to try and repro it. I deleted, trashed, cleaned, etc. Reinstall and still there. It is sad how... (sigh) not sure what to call it.. *friendly* forums on the internet can be. If it is broken, can I return it?
  4. Hi! OK, this was a bug in L8. I installed L9, and tried the process shown in the linked swf (woohoo for Jing! ignore the background talking.. was on Skype at the time, and they were talking as I was recording.. ooops). Prefs trashed, initialized all but key commands, and then new song, add time sig of 7/8 at bar 12, drag audio file to bar 4, Region->Folder->Pack Folder. Double-click folder region, and then drag audio file from bin. Notice the "hover box" shows a different Bar|Beat value. Also, Snap was set to default "Smart," no changes tot hat value at all. When attempting to drop the audio file at bar 13, it would not let me! One beat before, or one after, but not on it. So, attempt to drop at Bar 14. Let go of mouse button, and.. region gets *thrown* forward to the value shown in the "hover box" (~bar 17-ish). A friend tried this, and it worked fine! Is it me? Some oddity? How can I completely clean Logic Studio (any and all bits), and then do a minimal install of Logic 9 to see if it might be something from my *abuse* of Logic 8 that may have caused this? Or can everyone repro this possible (major, for me) bug?? Here is a SWF recording: http://www.nintheye.com/pics/Logic_time_sig.swf
  5. Hardware.. Yamaha VL70-m, plus Patchman Turbo VL chip. Worked for Michael Brecker (RIP), Herbie Hancock, more.
  6. Hahahaha! Yeah, have seen some of those.. I like information though.. like candy for me.. The problem is that this affected the way I work..well, I guess it is a matter of me looking at the available features, and then looking at what I want to be able to do. And then look at PT, and consider the things I cannot do in PT that I want to do. L8 presented.. alot. Concession here, another there.. realize the object oriented mindset, and the brilliance. But, then after using L8 for a bit... (sigh). I wanted to be able to TAB out guitar and bass lines. I play 6 and 7 string guitars, and 4,5,and 6 string basses. And to be able to TAB as I record bits of inspiration.. so I do not have to relearn a complex line later.. right within a single app? Woohoo! L9 added enough to make this part good to go, but the other bug, and it's "children" (plus the score related one(s) you mentioned).. well, it would have been nice to see it all fixed. I really am glad it has proven to be a great upgrade for others though!
  7. http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs176.snc1/6620_119819284352_543679352_2193525_1518121_n.jpg One example. Folder has audio region in it, expand folder (down one level), drop another audio region at bar 12... but... it says.. 17? Huh. Drop it at 12, it will disappear and re-appear at 17. With longer songs (regular thing for me), multiple sigs (same), and drop a file at, say, 110.. but, the "hover box" (forget name) will show a bar|beat later along (say, 190). Drop at 110, but Logic "thinks" you meant to drop at the "hover box" location.. so it moves it there for you. Which means.. user needs to scroll down to find it, and then slide it back (spot). I reported this bug, with screenies, as well as variants and offshoots during my short use of L8. I could have adjusted my workflow(s) to compensate for these issues. But, I got ticked and went back to PT. I tried most DAW-quencers out there, read manuals, scoured forums. All to try and find something that had as many feature sets I was looking for. I actually stopped working on music due to frustration. Which was good! Nice break Cubase 5 filled many. And then Logic 9. Different workflow, but most of the feature sets I wanted, and NO DONGLE. Lose or have the dongle stolen, and you are done. While it gets sorted with insurance or whatever, completely SOL. Logic and Sonar are beautiful in the no dongle area. I so wanted L9 to be it. They added almost enough, rounded out other things.. but this set of bugs, the 31-char limit remaining, EXS24 left untouched (again), Tuner "adjusted" for the low B on a 5-string bass (but not "unlocked" for other extended range instruments... It is just me, and that is cool. I can go back to Cubase (for now). L9 seems to be a dream for the rest, so they must have done well. Wow- that was wicked long... maybe I am more ticked than I realize...
  8. Cool! I will answer my own questions Went ahead and grabbed the upgrade. extended range: Well, partial consideration. I can do more than 6 strings for TAB. Chord Grid is a no though. Tuner: 5-string bass standard tuning! But drop-A is a no go. Whoever capped this needs to be hit with a bass. A nice old 12lb'er or so. Non- x/4 time sigs: Broken!!! STILL!!! I am truly baffled. I guess since it doesn't have Brittany potential, it isn't music suitable for Logic. Wish I could return the stupid upgrade. Wasted $200, and 30 mins waiting in the store while they figured out the correct SKU to look for, and then send someone across the mall to a warehouse to grab the CORRECT product. Maybe I will see y'all with Logic X! Been fun
  9. Could someone please check the 7-string thing? Calling Apple was.. interesting. Word is local store has the upgrade, but I really wanted to know about these things before doing the upgrade. Oh! Did they get rid of the 31-character limit by any chance? Pretty please?
  10. Oh! One more! I did not see any changes to EXS24 mentioned. Yes? No? Although Kontakt 3.5 seems to be the big kahuna now, it would have been nice ot see EXS24 get some TLC
  11. Hi! Was all set to grab L9 Upgrade, but now I am curious about a few things..odd things I think, but if all 3 are broken/missing.. well, no sense in grabbing the L9 Upgrade for me. The online manual for L9, Working with Tablature, Score Settings, Tablature Settings section is confusing. It states intially, "..but also for other fretted instruments, with four to six strings (or courses of strings)." Further down though, under the sub-heading Tuning Set Parameters, it states: "..Strings pop-up menu: Choose the number of strings (between three and sixteen). Note: Up to eight strings are shown directly within the pane. If more than eight are selected, you can move the visible section by clicking the arrows, or dragging the scroller." Uh... what? Is it max 6? Or would I finally be able to notate TAB for 7-string guitar? 7-string guitar is the primary instrument for my second guitarist, and I like to TAB out guitar parts as I write them (lest I forget and have to relearn my own writings lol). Bottom line: Can I create 7-string TABlature? How about a 7-string Chord Grid? Tuner: In L8, it was *limited* to a drop-D on bass (or was it E?). Yeah, no tuning for 5-string bass! Have they *fixed* this for L9? (tune low B on bass? Drop-A? minor inconvenience, but my recording rack has the tuner I use, and I like being able to simply activate the tuner while running scratch tracks, especially if I am stuck in bed (I am disabled, and end up confined at times.. woohoo for the MacBook Pro!). Non- x/4 time sigs were problematic in certain situations. With folders.. wow.. If I recall correctly, the basic example I gave with a bug report was: 1) Create song 2) add some tracks, tempo to 120, initial sig of 4/4. 3) after say, 12 bars, time sig change to 7/8. 4) bar or two later, time sig to, say, 11/16. 5) time sig to..hmm.. how about 3/4, for 10 bars. 6) create some regions on some of the tracks, with content spanning at least one of the non- x/4 measures. 7) pack some of those regions to a folder. 8) using hierarchy, look in a folder, and then try to drag an audio clip/file onto the edit field. What does it show for hover time (the bar|beat the file will be dropped at)? Is it accurate? Basically, L8 would treat Bars as groups of 4 Beats; use 4/4 and then, say, x/8, and it would "round" beats in groups of 4.. sort of. I should make a vid of this using Jing or something... now that I read what I wrote, it makes it seem far more complicated than it is (my personal monkey on my back it seems ). There were a lot more non- x/4 time sig flukes/bugs, all sub-bugs really I think. Was almost like sadistic ex-nun living in L8, just waiting to smack my knuckles with a metal ruler if I even thought about changing the /4 to 8 or 16..lol.. There were some other quirks and idiosyncrasies with Logic that were tough for me to get around/over, but since leaving PT for good and going Cubase 5, I am hoping Logic 9 will be an alternate choice now.. hopefully.
  12. Hi! Not sure if this is the right (best?) place for this thread.. Skip below if you like.. I am mainly interested in how others have fared when comparing other apps to Logic 9 (yeah, not many yet! ). Please include the type(s) of music you primarily use your app(s) for, and pros/cons of others versus L9. I come from a very extensive background of analogue and PT use (over 10 years on PT). Over the past several years I have reduced my music life to just my own music (eclectic prog rock/metal). In an effort to refine my toolkit, I began weeding out tools I no longer find much (or any) use for, and also began trying to figure out which tools might benefit me most. In the DAW (is there a better acronym/descriptive for "it" now?) area.. wow... But, PT ain't it for composing (for me!). I bought L8, but it got placed in my closet within a month or two due to my own frustrations due to issues/bugs with several "must have/work" features. I was going to buy Komplete 5, and today I got the last bit of cash I needed to buy it! But.. sold out everywhere So, an upgrade to L9 is possible. But, I own Cubase 5. But, I also despise dongles. VariAudio was one of the features that put C5 at the top for me. But, I also own Melodyne Studio (and the plug-in). But, integrating it into Logic 8 was not much fun, mainly due to time sigs and having to reload after every edit (or, having to bounce a full track.. bounce in place? Hmm..) Anyway! I am going to grab L9 upgrade, but I am always curious about other user's experiences, workflows, etc. Oh! Daw? Sequencer? DawQuencer?
  13. Call first... Portland store has not received theirs yet. Heard other stores are SOL as well.
  14. Wow- thx for all the "Welcome back"'s! I am in a really interesting spot now... I was planning to spend the absolute last of my spare cash (saved for a bit even) on the NI Komplete sale, as it (appears to..) ends July 31. And now this. Rough call...because.. L9 looks great, but a lot of it appears to be, "Woohoo! We have eclipsed DAWs from last year! PT 7 killer, and more!" (not to diminish L9 too much ) On the flip, for OS X users, it means we can laugh at the resource issues others are having with their DAWs (with Sonar on W7 x64 being able to do so as well, albeit in a different manner). Every app has bugs, most dependent upon user workflow and demand. L8 failed for me BIG TIME with odd meters, especially multiple odd meter changes, tempo changes; add folder usage for a complete nightmare. I spent time watching some vids, and reading the new online L9 manual. Seems all my questions are answered there (in theory! Maybe in practice, remains to be seen ), except the odd meter thing (odd meaning anything but x/4 sigs). Owning Cubase 5.. L9 is a step backward in feature set for me. Being on Mac, L9 is a huge leap in resource utilization (with caveats, of course). PT is all but dead to me (yeah, I know- put your eyes back in and lift jaw from floor.. lol). The new VariAudio is brilliant (with caveats) in C5, and scoring actually rises above "shabby" now (but not to "shibby," for me). Sibelius still for "real" scoring for print. The Arrange Track, plus addition of Tempo and Time Sig tracks (ala rulers), along with several other features brought C5 to a point that simply eliminated PT8 as an option (ridiculously so for me). Having multiple CC lanes in Cubase would be something I would miss, and something I am still trying to figure the why of for L9 not adding it (HyperDraw does NOT replace this need IMO). If L9 had FlexiPitch, and fixed my other issues.. well, the "no dongle" feature would have tipped the scales easily and unquestionably. I will end up buying the upgrade, but it is now a huge question for me to decide when.. especially given that I almost spent the only cash I have left already
  15. Ha! I finally have a reason to come back.. or do I? Release date? I have heard Sep 3, but if I add the upgrade fro 8 to 9 to my cart in the online Apple Store, it says it will ship within 24 hrs? Available in brick n mortar Apple stores (upgrade pak, not the full $499)? Have odd meters been "dealt with" finally? (this was so broken in 8; explaining this would take a post or two I think.. basically, odd meters would throw things off, compounding with each meter change in a song) With all the new guitar/bass stuff, did they pay any attention to extended range instruments? In 8, 7-string guitar and 5- & 6- string basses were left in the cold. Even the tuner would not allow for anything below the low E of a 4-string bass. TAB scoring would not allow for extended range, nor would chords. More questions, keeping it short (relatively ) for this thread. I am guessing until it is actually in someone's hands, and due to NDA restrictions, no answer is possible today? This was a pretty wild announcement to find today!
