Mysterious "side chain gate" setting [SOLVED]

Wed Mar 19, 2014 2:35 am

Attached to this question is an LP X project. The issue with it is simple but baffling: first create an extra SI track with, say, the Vintage EP, then record some MIDI on that track. You'll notice that when recording or just playing the instrument, it responds as it should. However, if you play back the recorded MIDI, it triggers the track above it (the UB track).
I have found no obvious routings in the environment or elsewhere (there are no sidechains active in any plugin) and I am baffled. However, even the piano roll window mentions that the region is called "side chain gate". So it seems all this is by design, albeit a design I've never come across before.

I don't see a gate anywhere in this project, nor a side chain. Who knows what this is and how this works?

The UB stuff is inside a folder.

EDIT: seeren beat me to it.

First: thanks, Jordi, I had a hunch you could answer this one.

And then:
 but also :?

OK, well, that sort of solves it, though I do still not understand why it behaves like this (playing live you hear the selected instrument/track, but any MIDI region will only play back Ultrabeat? What's that all about? What the point of being able to create tracks with other instruments inside that folder, if they can't play back their own MIDI?)

You're welcome :)

Yeah, I don't see the point of that either but what's happening is that MIDI from outside reaches the selected track's instrument, while MIDI on regions reach the instrument on the top level. Works the same in Logic 9.

The folder is on the UB track.
Unpack the folder with your new instrument and pack it again to create a folder track.
Now you can add new instruments within the folder.
