Automation Not Moving with Insert Effect

Hi Everyone,

Here's my scenario:

I have 4 Insert Effects on a Channel Strip with Automation on all of them.

I've then added an Insert Effect between Insert 1 and 2, which effectively

now makes Inserts 2, 3 and 4; 3, 4 and 5 from an Audio FX position point of view.

The problem I have is that the Automation for these Inserts stayed on the

the original position of the Insert Effects, meaning that the Automation is

still for Insert #, 2, 3 and 4 as opposed to the new Insert Position 3, 4 and 5.

I hope this is making sense.

Please advise if this is a bug in Logic or if I'm doing something wrong.

Alternatively, how can I move the Automation to the Relocated Insert effect.

Thanks.

Hi Gino and welcome to Logic Pro Help!

Click this link to your signature and add your system information:

• Logic version and sub-version (e.g. Logic 10.0.7)

• OS X version and sub-version (e.g. OS 10.9.4)

• Computer (e.g. MacBook, Mac Pro, iMac)

• Processor (e.g. 2.2 GHz Intel i7)

• Memory (e.g. 8GB)

• Audio interface manufacturer and model (e.g. RME Babyface)

(most of that information can be found by choosing Logic Pro X > About Logic Pro X, and  > About This Mac)

You should be able to switch plug-ins around and have their automation follow.

Have you tried this on an empty new project?

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the tip on my Signature, I've complete the details.

Eric:

I have tied this on a new project, the automation definitely does not follow.

it seems as if the automation is tied to the position in the Channel Strip as

opposed to the actual Plugin. it automated whatever plugin happens to be

in that position. Any advice?

Please find my specs in my signature.

Thanks guys.

The Apple Loop you see, 80s Dance Bass Synth 09 had two effects, Compressor and Channel EQ and I put automation on both of them before I added Echo between them and notice my automation moved Channel EQ down.

Also notice my signature, I tested that on Logic Pro X 10.0.7. I'm also on Mavericks but I don't think the OS matters.

EDITED: Correction. Sorry, I tested this on my Laptop and it's on 10.8.5 with Logic Pro X 10.0.7

Try updating to v.10.0.7.

Does the problem is repeatable in a fresh new project? If so, then try resetting your pref files. If not, chances are that your current project file is corrupted; in which case you could try to rebuild your project via importing the data into another new project.

OK Everyone,

I've upgraded but the problem persists. However, #ValliSoftware, your screenshot helped a lot.

I can now better explain the problem and see if you guys concur.

So, I get the behaviour that you guys are getting in terms of the Automation moving with the

Effect, when the Automation is tied to the Plugin directly.

However, when I drop down the automation parameter and select Main -> Insert #1 Bypass (See attached screenshot),

for example, that automation gets tied to the Plugin's Position as opposed to the Plugin itself. See attached screenshot

for how to get to this and check if the same happens for you guys.

My objective is to switch the plugin On and Off. Is there another way to do this perhaps as opposed to the way I'm doing it?

#ValliSoftware

I see in your screenshot you have On Off indicators in your automation lane whereas mine says: Bypassed.

I'm just wondering why this would be different, ie, if you're also bypassing/switching the Effect on and off?

Thanks all.

Ah...

Now we are getting somewhere.

You could automate the MIX button or the dry and wet signal instead of the bypass function. In fact it can help you with clicks and pops caused by the bypass action.

#ValliSoftware

I see in your screenshot you have On Off indicators in your automation lane whereas mine says: Bypassed.

That's parameters that are on or off.

You can turn off a band in the EQ or switch the Limiter or Auto Release on or off on the Compressor.

Thanks everyone for helping me out with this one.

Eric:

Thanks for your feedback as well. I've achieved the same

results by automating other parameters, as you've mentioned.

However, I do think that since every plugin comes with an

On/Off switch, it would make sense to have this parameter

automatable at a plugin level as opposed to its Channel

Strip position only.

Thanks again all. Much appreciated.
