Danythedog
Hi, I was running under Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with my RME Fireface 800 without a glitch, but since I upgraded with Lion 10.7.4 I' have kernel panics when I shut down or restart my computer. I have the latest RME drivers installed on my Mac. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Daniel
triplets
Lion has become more a pain than an improvement. Any reasons you switched to Lion? Snow Leopard is so solid.

Jordi Torres
I've read things about 10.7.4 and kernel panics and errors related to the new version of the SMC...what makes you think it's related to the fireface? J.
Danythedog
Only have kernel panic with Fireface connected, but it could be a reason, how can I change this SMC version (if possible of course...) Daniel
Jordi Torres
Here's how to downgrade to the previous version of the SMC, but I can't guarantee it will fix your particular problem...worth a shot though, if you ask me: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57432796-263/tackling-smc-console-errors-after-os-x-10.7.4-update/ J. Jordi Torres
I hope it works. If it doesn't, rewind to 10.7.3. J.

Jordi Torres
com.apple.iokit.IOFireWireFamily(4.4.5)com.apple.driver.AppleFWOHCI(4.8.9) The problem seems to be related to the IOFireWireFamily kernel extesion and its AppleFWOHCI, and how they interact with the Fireface driver....but I just checked the 10.7.3 Combo update and the versions of both are the same (4.4.5 and 4.8.9). I'd give a shot to going back to the previous SMC (3.1.1). J.
Jordi Torres
I see that the IOAudioFamily kext is also mentioned. In the report it appears as version 1.8.6fc17. In the 10.7.3 it appears as version "1.8.6". Don't know if that makes a real difference. J.
Simon Morrison
The kernel panic is not related to the Fireface 800 - it works perfectly with Mac OS X 10.7.4 and RME driver 3.07. Remove the following third-party extensions from: Macintosh HD > System > Library > Extensions: pacesupport.snowleopard RDUSB009ADev soundgrid Soundflower SyncMate.kext RDUSB0033Dev LittleSnitch Your system should now boot/shutdown correctly. You will need to install Lion-compatible versions of: • PACESupport (v5.8) from http://www.ilok.com • Soundflower (1.6.2.1) from code.google.com/p/soundflower/downloads/list • SyncMate (3.6.1701) from mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html Check with Waves for Soundgrid Lion compatibility. StuartFox
I'm having exactly the same issue, Kernel panics on restart or shut down that only happen with the FF800 plugged in. I'm running 10.7.4 on a Mac Pro 2010, I have done a completely fresh 10.7 install last week, all new drivers, app versions etc. I did, out of interest try temporarily removing the Pace support extension after reading the above, even though all my versions are up to date and Lion compatible, and the issue stopped. I've now removed the Pace drivers altogether using their uninstall utility and the problem seems to have gone but I need to use my ilok protected software! Its odd that unplugging the FF 800 also solves this... Any further ideas?
StuartFox
Scratch that about the Pace drivers, I just had a KP without them there.... I've been switching my FF800 off before restarting - seems to do the trick.. not great though: I've posted my panics if anyone is kind enough to take a look..... https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2502628/sfox_kernelpanics.zip Cheers

StuartFox
Its bizarre isn't it? This is happening on a new (replacement) mac pro. I popped the old hard drive in and booted into 10.7.4 on that and there were no issues. I can't think of anything different, and for me its only started in the last 48 hours. I think there was an airport and java update in the last couple of days... doubt thats broken anything this badly though......?

StuartFox
OK, I've just had a 2 hour session with a senior AppleCare Tech - he logged into my mac and worked through some things and the issues seems to be resolved [touch wood]. We removed (copied to the desktop and deleted) items in the Launch Agents and StartupItems then tested and the issues had gone. Then replaced items one by one. My iLok drivers were causing an issue, the installer wouldn't let me reinstall them after we'd modified the contents in the system files... had to re set permissions for the system directories, restart and try again.... eventually we got the iLok drivers reinstalled and now the issue has gone. Best guess was that a third party startup file had become corrupt, possibly after one of the recent apple updates... but who knows for sure. I wouldn't recommend messing around with these settings unless you have a time machine backup you can fall back on, just saying what we did to fix it. I wonder if it will reappear at any point.........
Danythedog
Can you give me the exact ilok driver's name that caused the problem? Thanks
StuartFox
Well after a day free of them yesterday with lots of restarts I got one again this morning. Tell me, if you go to force quit, and quit the Fireface Mixer and Fireface settings, then shut down... does the KP still occur?
Danythedog
No, If i unplug the fireface, no KP anymore (and sure of it), I 'm definitely sure there's something wrong between imac and fireface since Lion, maybe the firewire I/O on the Imac or/and the voltage...but nothing with Ilok, or else. Did you post on RME forum?
StuartFox
I mean, what happens if you leave the fireface plugged in, but remove the software before you restart... quit both fireface apps which are running in the background...
Simon Morrison
Some troubleshooting tips: 1. StuartFox
I've gone through all the troubleshooting here and spent hours with AppleCare . Still this is a problem. Kernel panics on every shut down or restart unless the ff800 is turned off first. Even after the 10.7.5 update. Has anyone else had and cured this issue.....
