Beats by Dre: are they actually any good?

Postby Trevascus » Tue Jun 12, 2012 12:55 pm

A friend had some of these 'swanky', or not so, new headphones called Beats by Dre, which i'm sure you've heard of.

Being into music and such I asked to try them out. I put them on and listened to a song, and it sounded terrible. There was so much low end it made me hate what I was hearing.

Now if you don't know, these headphones go for £280 a pair. Yes you heard correctly. I have a pair of Sennheisers which i got from Amazon for £13.00, and they sound 1000000x better than Dre's product.

I wanted to put it to you guys who hopefully have a little more knowledge about what the headphones are actually made with, and I wanted to find out whether these are any good or if the fact that they have Dre's stamp on them is the only thing to offer. Some of my materialistic friends seemed to disagree with me and argued that these headphones were the best thing out there, i'm a little skeptical.

Well, they're obviously not the best thing out there when there's stuff like this on the market: http://www.grado.co.uk/grado-earphones/ ... phones.htm http://www.grado.co.uk/grado-earphones/ ... eadset.htm

I've not used them , but have only ever heard bad things about them. I'd say trust your ears, and not corporate branding. It seems pretty obvious to me you'd just be paying for the name and not the quality.

Yeah, I have a coworker at my day job that is a musician and DJ on the side, and he has a pair of cans and earbuds that are of the Dre, MD, variété that he uses when he's DJing. He's tried to show them off to me, and I guess for those purposes they're fine, but balanced they definitely aren't, and I found them really underwhelming even as casual listening headphones.

Though they are on the right track if they're looking for the best thing out there to be materialistic with…

I'll probably never create a better signature later.

I've been told they're bass heavy and because of that, they're not ideal for mixing. Most headphone packaging will display the frequency range, the wider, the better I believe. Also - you don't want headphones that do EQ for you if you're going to be using Logic, etc. because bass can be manipulated by the user. EQ however, not as much.

Any experience I've had with them, has been absolutely miserable. They focus so much on not attenuating the lower end (which doesn't do that amazing of a job with that), along with raising it; that the mids and highs do not present themselves in a pleasant manner.
That said, that's only from experience using the headphones. I haven't tried the buds, but I highly doubt that it would make a world of difference.
I'd use my Ultimate Ears over them, by all means. They're very crisp, with the right amount of everything.

Worst cans I've used for the price. They are comfy, but sound like they were desighned
By a hip hop fan with zero knowlage of frequency response. You must remember they
are not marketed for pro users. Mainly for listeners.

Yeah. I tested them A/B vs some $24 Sony buds. The Sonys wiped the floor with them,
Considering the price.
