STP as an external editor... Workflow?

Postby comeandgoband » Tue Nov 25, 2008 1:29 pm

So I'm using STP's reduce noise feature quite a lot as an external editor for tracks in Logic Pro. I have STP set in the Logic Prefs. I select a region and click "Options - Audio - Open in STP."

I run the Reduce Noise (or use a scripts sometime) in STP. It's at this point that I wonder if I'm being as efficient as I can be. My process from here is:
Save the file into the same folder as the original with a new name).
Create a duplicate track in Logic.
Drag the new file into Logic and line up with original file in the timeline.

Is this the fastest way to go? It would be nice to be able to save the audio file to the exact same location and skip the drag and drop.

Suggestions?

Simplest way to go is: select the audio region in Logic. Choose Options > Open in Soundtrack Pro.

In Soundtrack Pro, process the audio as desired, then choose Process > Flatten all Layers, then File > Save.

Then go back to Logic and your original audio file has been destructively edited. There's no need to ever create a new track or drag a new file.

dave,

thanks... i thought there had to be a way to go directly from stp back into logic. that saves me a couple of steps and a lot of time for sure.

cheers,

shannon

I am very new to STP2. Is there a way of doing this non destructively so a copy of the file will automatically be added into the arrange window and audio bin inside of Logic, or do I have to 'save as' then import it myself?

Do it the other way around. Before you edit in STP, select the audio file and choose "Audio > Convert Region to New Audio File". The old audio file is now your backup, the new one will be STP-ed.

Thanks David, makes perfect sense. Don't know why I didn't think of that!

Hi, Ive been trying to solve the problem with STP as an ext editor. After almost a year i found out a work around, but that is too tiring to do.
I do a "open in stp" command in logic, i then edit it in stp and press 'Cmnd s' to save the file.
After this point is the problem...!!!
In the videos i've seen, it just saves without any dialogue. And it is updated in Logic.
But for me it opens up a "save" dialogue window and the default file type is set to "Audio File Project". If i press the save button it saves in a "stap" format and the file in logic no longer produces any sound. Just today i realised that if i chose a format in which the audio file is, it asks me to replace the file and then it is updated in Logic and plays fine. Is there a way to set the STP file type in the SAVE window to the default file type? Im running on STP 3.0.1 and LOGIC 9.1.7.
Thanks

It seems you forgot this part:

Try it again, it works.

Hi David and J,

If i flatten all actions, the processing becomes destructive and does not allow me to do further changes to the file. Suppose i had an eq and compressor across the whole file and after sometime i felt i need to change the eq a bit. Then i will not be able to access the unprocessed wave. One thing here is i am happy with my compressor setting and i dont want it to be changed. So now i cannot even use the back up file i created in Logic before i came to STP. How do i achieve this non-destructive method.

Yes, that's correct.

I believe the only way is to work on a copy...and in that case you would need to start processing from scratch if you change your mind about something...meaning you won't be able to take advantage of STP's Actions editing.

You can save a .stap (SoundTrack Audio Project) copy which will retain all your action history in STP.
