MixWOLPH 3- Draft Submission- Chicosatis

Postby ChicoSatis » Wed Aug 24, 2011 11:41 am

Hey all,

Well, here is my first draft. Like many of you, I know very little about this genre (especially in terms of mixing), so my goal for the first mix was to just get everything to "sound good." That is, create a landscape. Make sure everything fit. Balance frequencies. I'm interested to see what people do in terms of automation. (Filter sweeps, cool panning tricks, etc.) I decided to save that much for my final submission and just steal the best ideas you guys put up.

So far so good though. I really like the song. Very catchy. Thanks again to Lagerfeldt for letting us use it.

HAve a good one. :D

Bah, i don't have the Space DSN Insert as i am using Logic Express, still sounds good though.

I notice a lot of your channel strips are way up in the red on the dB meter and your stereo out strip is faded down to compensate...is this usual? I try to keep each strip in the negative dB and i keep the stereo out at 0dB - am i being a numpty and missing something here?

Yeah, I notice the Output fader was down too. But I just pushed it up to zero dB and it now peaks at about -2.

I've gotten to like this song too! As with everything I work with, it often happens that the next morning the last thing I mixed will be going through my brain. Sometimes this is irritating! But I'm liking this tune a lot. It was fun to mix and try out things I don't usually get to do with my mostly acoustic clientele.

ChicoSatis, I'm looking forward to hearing your final mix 'cause I really liked what you did in MixWOLPH 2. This track so far feels a bit over reverby to me in places and I'd like to hear the voice more up front somehow, especially compared to some of the mallet synth stuff. OTOH, I really like where you put that busy guitar lead in the first chorus. I'm gonna have to revisit that bit in my own mix.

Hey all,

Thanks for giving it a listen. It's funny you mentioned the vocals needing to be up a bit more camillo because as I was uploading the file I was thinking "People are gonna want the vocals to be up a bit more." I did try raising them but for some reason they felt out of place. Like they were sitting on top of the music instead of meshing with it. I chalk that up to my musical tastes. (Early punk) where the vocals were often times buried beneath the music. Guess I'll never be a mixer of pop music.

I agree with the reverb too. I did go over the top in some places. Probably gonna pull back a bit after I listen to some other posts and get some ideas.

And as for the output, what happened was I got so busy mixing I wasn't paying attention to my overall volume and when I finally did, and I realized it was too high, I just did the lazy thing and pulled it down.

Thanks for listening and commenting. Look forward to hearing you guys too.

...which is, in case anyone's wondering, completely 'legit' when working with 24 bit audio files in a 32 bit floating point mixer (as Logics' mixer is). Except for the Stereo Output, you can put +1,500 dB (!) on a Channel Strip without distortion - as long as the main output doesn't clip, AND the +1,500 doesn't hit any 24 bit FIXED point plugins. I believe (almost?) all of Logics' plugs are 32 bit floating point, so as long as the output is at or under 0 dBfs, everything should be hunkydory...

"Talent hits a target no one else can hit..."

(...) :?
...the rest I sort of forgot, but it was a really awesome quote!

I second Camillo's points.

Hey Chico Satis

I've had a quick listen to your draft submission & the thing which I noticed more than anything was the amount of reverb on the mix. I haven't put anywhere near that amount of reverb on my version.

The only other mix I've listened to so far is ErikSimons, once I've had a chance to digest them all I'll give some proper feedback, good effort.
