Update Check

Postby Markisflippinsweet » Tue Jul 17, 2012 2:43 pm

I think an amazing feature, that might not be possible, would be the ability to check for third party plug-in updates, and update inside of Logic.
Some plug-ins do allow for them to say a new version is available, but update them from outside sources than Logic, itself.

I really like this idea a lot, though I'd probably want to see such a utility available as a 3rd party program and not something integrated into Logic itself. I have the feeling that an independent developer would tend to be more on top of changes that occur in the 3rd party plugin world than Apple would.

And I wouldn't want such a utility to "auto update". For me it would be great to be notified about updates from a single source (instead of having to hunt down news about updates on individual developer's websites, forums, or KVR) and I'd want to have the ption to install them when I decided to, because it's never a good idea to update anything while in the middle of a project.

A small technical note... third party plugins are just that, third party, thus they're never associated with or integrated into Logic directly. When a plugin update is initiated, the plugin code is updated "outside" of Logic. If 3rd party plugs were integrated into Logic, they wouldn't necessarily be available for use in other DAW software, such as systems on which Logic and ProTools are both installed.

I would like this feature too. The update check could simply be information. I.e. "Depends on OS version xx.x.x, this Version of the ProApps Kits, these third party libraries or software bundles - like the Max Runtime -" etc etc. It is easier if I don't have to resolve a lot of potentially hidden unknowns.

Then I would like a folder or "sandbox" where I could try it out to see if it will run free of conflicts. If it works do a final install. Or easily remove it should it be necesary.
I would also like a reporting mechanism that lets me give them genuine feedback. I'd help out if I could....
Then I would happily engage in all kinds of overly positivistic word-of-mouth ....

As to whether it is possible or not, the Linux Community has been doing it for years. At a way more advanced and complex level.

The "sandbox" would be your Time Machine. Anytime I've installed a new, bad version, I always went back through the Time Machine.

Ski, I think it would be easiest to have it placed right in Logic, itself. Then you'd never have to leave the application to check.
Maybe a third party developer could make it, and sell it to Apple.

Yes, but it maybe interesting to read the whole concept of this initiative.
In short, it is all your plugins bought and managed from one place.

By the way, I didn't step in yet. The pluginupdate beta looks nice too.
