32-bit Bridge Crashes when Computer Idle

Postby ski » Fri Oct 07, 2011 8:47 pm

Since "day 1" of getting my new computer (see specs below) I've been finding that the 32-bit bridge will crash if I leave the computer idle for a few hours. Logic itself doesn't crash, just the bridge. Anyone else have this problem?

Additional details...

• my computer never sleeps (literally), though I do have the screensaver enabled. Haven't found a correlation between the screensaver kicking in and the bridge crashing, but I wouldn't rule it out

• the only 32-bit plugins I'm running these days are the Stillwell Vibe EQ and a Stillwell reverb

Me too Ski.

I put the screen itself to sleep but leave everything else up and running and if I walk away for anything more than 40 or so mins.. I can almost count on the 32bit bridge crashing it seems.

Yep me too.. Brand new Mac pro with SL and minimal plugins.. Since very first day of running the new rig, If I leave it idle for 45 mins or so the bridge crashes every time.. very annoying.

Same here :(

Even with:
Empty Project
No plug-ins loaded (32 or 64 bit)
No computer sleep
No screensaver

Seems totally random.
32-bit bridge might crash after a few minutes or might run fine for hours.
Manual...WTF is that!

Same here. 32bb crashes (sometimes) when in background. To me, that's already "how Logic works" by now...

i'm also fairly new to running 64 bit and I haven't noticed this phenomenon. it seems to happen more randomly for me. what does surprise me is that it seems like more of minor inconvenience when it happens - for me it never results in a complete failure, just a momentary pause in the workflow.

I'm surprised that so many people have this problem. Wow...

It's becoming a jumbo-sized inconvenience, as re-launching the bridge forces all sample-based plugins to reload. :(

True 'nuff! But when I'm sketching ideas (doing a lot of that lately) VEP slows me down. Though I was thinking of hosting my Stillwell stuff in VEP and just routing stuff to/from those plugs, but VEP and Stillwell don't play nice together so... :(

So what 3rd party sampler do you use? I somehow expected you to use Kontakt (which, as you prolly know, is 64 bit)...
although I have no idea why I expected that... :?

I'm using Play, Kontakt, and EXS-24. But lately I've been using Play almost exclusively. So it might be accurate to say that I'm experiencing these bridge crashes mostly with Play (64-bit) in my projects.

Wait a minute... so no 32 bit samplers? What plugins are 32 bit then? If you don't use any 32bitters, you can force quit the Bridge. Logic will tell you the bridge "quit unexpectedly" (well, not for the user it didn't), and the "relaunch bridge?" dialog you can just cancel, and hey presto! no more collapsing sample-reloading sonuvabridge anymore!

Hey Erik,

To clarify... no 32-bit samplers. The only 32-bit plugins I'm using are the Stillwell EQ and Verbiage. So, typical example, I'll start out with few instances of Play. Maybe some EXS as well, just to get an idea down. To polish up the sound of the overall 2-mix I'll strap a Vibe EQ across the stereo output to get the sound I like. With the project still in memory, and after leaving the computer idle for a while the sonofaBridge will quit.

Hi ski,

This happens to me quite regularly to - I'm mainly hosting a couple of Waves and McDSP plug-ins and a probably one or two others that I can't think of right now.

I wouldn't blame Play though, as I've definitely had it occur without Play loaded anywhere in the system.

An idea that just occurred to me is to put logic in looped playback, over an area of silence, when going to lunch ... I wonder if that would work?

Thanks to everyone who's chimed in so far.

Tom, your cycling idea is very interesting! I'll try that tonight for sure.

Cheers,
