Swap files

Postby Mellotrongalore » Tue Jul 17, 2012 2:15 am

Hi folks,

I need some tips here. I'm producing music together with a friend. However, he lives not nearby. What's the easiest way to send each other works in progress so we can separately work on them without the need to get together? I use Logic Pro on my Imac and he uses Logic Express on his MacBook.

Thanks!

Hi Leo and welcome to Logic Pro Help.

You could use something like wetransfer.com or dropbox.com to send each other the desired files. Ideally you could have an FTP server set up where each one of you can upload/download the necessary files - so you can upload Song_Leo, your friend (let's call him Jon) downloads it, adds a few tracks and uploads it under the name Song_Jon, you tweak it some more and call it Song_Leo-2, etc etc.... there are many ways to work out the organization.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. We use dropbox at the moment. When I've finished working on a track I bounce a mix to dropbox. My friend (let's call hem Ed) can listen to the track at home. We are however looking for a smart way for him to import the track in progress in his Logic Express program, add his stuff and sent it to me (via dropbox) where I can import it into Logic Pro and work on it further. Do you have any tips for use there?

Many thanks!

I would set as a rule that ANY audio files you guys exchange always start at bar position 1 1 1 1, which should also always be the start of your projects.

You send him your mix as an audio file, he drags and drops it into his Arrange window at 1 1 1 1 and works on his tracks.

If his tracks are software instruments (and you own the same instruments) then he uploads a compressed (.zip) logic file with his software instrument tracks, which you download. You then open your original Logic file, locates his Logic file from your file browser and import the tracks he created.

If his tracks are audio tracks or soft instruments you don't own, ask him to export them as audio files starting at 1 1 1 1 (File > Export All Tracks as Audio Files) and upload those, then drag and drop them in your Arrange area at 1 1 1 1.

Hope that helps?

And I would add a small note that it is good practice to zip the folder of files before uploading to Dropbox or an FTP server.
