L9 - GUi customization, minor changes

Recommended Posts

Some good new about L9. The customization of the GUI by replacing specific image files inside app's Package Content is still working.

If you feel that Logic Pro requires at least some decent dB scales and LED metering on the Channel Strip Fader to be called a ProApp, just do it yourself.

L9 however changed the folder structure of it's Framework directories a little bit. So here is a quick link to a zip file with the images. I placed the images into two folders with their name reflecting the directory path to the final folder where to put the images. You open the treasure door (like any other OSX app) by right clicking on the Logic app and selecting "Show Package Content"

I will update the data on my Manuals page (http://rothermich.com/Manuals/) in the next couple of days, but that zip file here will have all the images that you need.

For those of you who haven't seen what is possible, here is a screenshot with the modified GUI. And please, if you have a different color preference, don't bitch around, either ignore it or create your own, it is pretty simple.

(I wished there would be just as easy a modification to get long file name support.)

Looks like you use individual instances of multi timb plugs like Kontakt and Omni.

is this for ease of automation or cpu load?

.

For most of the multi-timbral plugins (Stylus, Omnisphere, Kontakt, Play, etc) I use them as an individual instance. It is much easier to handle them in my workflow, where you move very quickly from one cue to the next cue. You are concentrating on one level (the mixer) and that is one level deep. One channel strip = One Patch. This makes it easy to change sounds, go to the channel open the plug, look for that sound, make changes on the channel strip for sound (plugins, sends, pan, etc), done.

There is one exception to that rule and that is the StromDrums2. I have a few Play presets with about 10 channels of big drums. I also have two Software instruments dedicated for those sounds with the MIDI instruments Object and the CC7-to-CC11 transformer setup so I can use my external Fader controls for each MIDI channel.

I hope this short description answers your question.

Edgar,

Your mods are easily the best ones. You make Logic complete with beautiful Cubase. HUGE thanks for the GUI mods, the purple loop bar is my favorite(hated the green) I do have couple of questions for you.

1) I couldn't find the path for the seond set of .tiff files-nothing was in frameworks. I haven't been able to get the pink and purple buttons on the transport

2) Also so how did you get the new inspector colored name field to show on the mixer. I like the thin color strip rather than the big block look of L8. (See the pic if my words explanation isn't clear.

The mixer has two View option (under the local View menu): Track Name and Track Number which it displays in two rows. Both are colored with the Track color. If you choose only Track Name, then you end with only one (colored) row.

Here is a screenshot of the folder path. Just double check it.

Thanks Edgar. Very helpful.By the way, congrats on all the great music you've been blessed ( and worked hard) to put in the world. I read your accomplishments(the short list) and think it's great that you take the time to help the rest of us. That is very admirable-you could've charged .99 in iTunes or something (LOL).

As it goes, I found the folder on seconds after pressing submit. Thanks again. Your mods are great.

  • 2 weeks later...

Guys look what i've found :0

I already mailed the maker of it, but apparently he deleted the files when upgrading to L9..he said he will try to look if he has em somewhere hidden...

this is the best mod I seen for logic.

The metering and the Pan/Send rotaries are sweeeeettt

I do hope someone could make the .tiffs for me in this style and for himself ofc hehe if the other guy cant find em.

I aint got a GFX suite to make it myself...

I just used the EQ button and the black send knob from the screenshot and incorporated them into my GUI mod. I also changed the fader image from what I had before. Now it looks more like ProTools.

All the images, including the new ones are available on my website.

Most of the fiff files are located in the "Recources" directories. Most of them are self explanatory. Use the FInders Quicklook or Coverflow to step through the images very quickly. The rest is trial and error.

The main graphical elements are in:

Logic Pro > Contents > Resources

More graphical elements like buttons are in:

Logic Pro > Contents > Framworks > MAResources.framework >Versions > A > Resources

In that location are all the transport buttons. If you are not a fan the round Fisher Prize buttons and prefer a more professional look like ProTools then swap them out with your own, something like ...

Edgar,

As far as I'm aware, any custom colors you assign in Logic's color palette are stored with Logic's preference file. And if you trash the prefs you lose all custom colors. So I'm wondering if you know of a way to customize the default set of colors for the color palette.

So I'm wondering if you know of a way to customize the default set of colors for the color palette.

I guess that custom color palette is hard coded deep inside the guts of the Logic app. Any changes to that color palette is then stored with the Logic preference file. Since OSX moved to a more transparent XML format for the preferences (.plist), a lot of preference settings can now be set directly in the Terminal or you can make them visible with a plist editor.

However, it seems that only the newer added preference settings are visible as a single string. All the old preferences are mashed together in one big binary encoded string that you can't edit. Here is a screenshot of the data string of the Logic preference file that includes the color palette. So technically you can copy-paste that code and save it in an external file and swap it out. I tried it and it actually works. But because that binary code contains a lot of other settings, that doesn't seem to practical. Here is a screenshot from the PlistEditor, the line is called "LogicBInaryPreferences"

http://idisk.mac.com/edgarrothermich-Public/Screenshots/Color1.png

There is another workaround. I use custom colors in Logic for Instruments groups and have the same problem after I have to trash the preference file - they are gone.

There is a nice little feature in the OSX Color Panel. That is the same floating window that is used system wide on all apps, the one that opens when double clicking on a color swatch in Logic's color palette. Select the third icon from its toolbar, that displays the Color Palettes. The Gear button on the right lets you create new custom color palettes, i.e. "Logic Colors". Now select the first color, click the add button and give it a name (Woodwinds), select another color, click the add button and give it a name (Brass), etc ...

http://idisk.mac.com/edgarrothermich-Public/Screenshots/Color2.png

Now whenever you loose the customized Logic color palette, you can recall that Palette from the Color Panel and recreate your custom colors fairly quickly.

The Custom color palettes are stored as single "clr" files in the "User>Library>Colors" directory. That makes it very portable, if you want to transfer your custom palettes to other machines. The other file in the directory "NSColorPanelSwatches.plist" stores all the colors that you place at the color swatches matrix at the bottom of the COlor Panel. You could also use that matrix to store your custom color if you dont' want to go through the extra work of naming the different colors.

I know this info might have raised the geek level a little bit, but maybe you could use it.

There was definitely a time when I would have been trading very geeky code snippets with you via the Internet. And... (wait a second... there was no Internet back then). Well, I guess we would have corresponded via letter post or perhaps telegraph. But I digress...

Thank you SO much for this! I really appreciate you taking so much time to reply and provide really cool insights and useful info. Gonna print this one out!

With Best Regards,
