Which Power Mac to get for Logic?

Postby chard » Tue Mar 28, 2006 2:18 pm

Hi,

How processor intensive is Logic Pro 7? I am getting a Power Mac and am wondering which to go for. Do I get a basic Dual Core 2 and load it with 2 or 4 GB of Ram or do I go for the Quad? Money is an issue but if I'm spending I may as well go for a refurb Quad if it's not overkill. Is the Quad more suited to imaging work.
I will be recording audio as well as soft-synth and fx. Does Logic prefer a ton of RAM or does it like processor power?
I have a hunch that an Intel 'Pro Mac' Power Mac replacement is on the cards at an Expo soon but you could wait forever and never buy anything.
Any help appreciated.

If you need one like yesterday go for the quad and you can do anything you want. That said, if you could wait I would wait for the intel core desktops to arrive. If Logic is a long erm investment for you, you'll have to update at some point. Why spend thousands to something which is almost outdated. If you want to practice, by a mini intel core. They're really cheap.

Yeah but I'm thinking £1600 for a Quad- I can use 7.1 on that for the next 4 years and still churn out great work.
Surely Apple wouldn't put out Intel-only Logic upgrades. They'd be alienating a massive core of mac-users.
The Intel equivalent of a Quad is going to cost a fortune if the Pro Book is anything to go by. The numbers may amount to a faster machine but you'd be looking at £2500 at least surely?
