Most Avant Garde Rock Music Now

Would like to hear your ideas on what is now the most "contemporary", topical, hot, cutting edge rock music? What sub genre? what artists/bands?

Last I heard of would be Battles or anything by Mike Patton, but I'm far from up-to-date.

Are you looking for something/someone to copy or just interested in being exposed to something new that you have not heard before?

Dubstep Metal. I don't like Korn, but I think they made a wise choice mixing their rock music with the hottest new genre.

As for Russia, where I am from, here it becomes more and more popular to blend rock with a touch of dance music mostly in bridges, but also in verses and choruses. Heard one band using electro elements in their rock music. It sounds quite interesting.

Build up something new!

If you really want to make new sounds why not just experiment and see what comes of it. You might find that you create something so unique and different that everyone wants to copy you. Insert cute wink emoticon here.

I will, but before I want to know what people THINK in regars to the answer to my question. It is IMPORTANT for me. I really want to know what is currently most topical and new in rock.
Also in order to move forward it is always important to know what's contemprorary and present-day. So, please, share, I would really appreciate the replies to my question.

Yeah, I've got the Melvins/Fantomas "Millenium Monsterwork" live studio album.

I don't know how possible Fantomas would be without Terry Bozzio (who, incidentally, has also been a drummer for Korn), and in turn I don't know if he could've done Fantomas without the gruelling initiation Zappa put him through.



Mike Patton is incredible, I was lucky enough to see Mr. Bungle in London during their 'California' tour around '98. His vocals are superb, he went maybe 20 cents out of tune once, for a fraction of a second, when he was hit square in the forhead with a beer can. They also had the cruel but genius idea of hiring a pair of local children's entertainers and magicians to support them, instead of a band. They were supremely s#!+, and were pelted with cans, but the funny/cringing/horrific atmosphere was a perfect start to the night

If you want true avant-garde rock, you need look no further than his solo album 'Adult Themes for Voice'. Just him, a microphone, and a desk going to 8-track:



As for Scott's philosophical "why?", I for one love being introduced to new music. It does not mean I have to copy it, but the wider your musical pallette and influences, the more flavours you have to bring to the table when you compose. That, and the sheer joy of hearing something new and inventive.

Don't feel the question was particularly philosophical but I agree with what you are saying in the rest of your statement in this quote.

I have a collection of over 1000 discs ranging from classical to punk and just about every genre in between and beyond and though I don't copy anyones work, obviously I, like everyone, am influenced by the music and other art forms that I am exposed to.

It is very common (too common) that people just find something that they think will sell or bring fame and just copy the sound/style (just look what has happened to Hip Hop for example). Which is why I have a very hard time finding anything very original these days. You really have to weed through the crap to find the gems.

I was, as I said, just curious what the OP's reason was for seeking out the latest trends.

Well, it was pretty incredible when Dave Lombardo was the drummer (I didn't even know Terry Bozzio had jumped in at some point! Gotta check that out)...I saw them play in Boston for their first tour...it was absolutely amazing! Definitely one of the best shows I've seen...ever. They played a relatively small venue (downstairs in The Middle East, in Cambridge) and I got there early so I got my socks knocked off right in front of the stage.

A funny occurrence: During the break, some dude decided it was a good idea to reach over and take one of the little stuffed animals Mike Patton had on top of his "effects-processing-table" (for lack of a better word)...the crowd almost lynched him so he was forced to put it right back Then when the guys from Fantomas came out for the 2nd part, Mike Patton goes straight to his table, picks up the very same stuffed animal the guy had taken and says: "Say hello to my little friend F*ck!"

I also saw Mr Bungle...twice in Boston and once in Rhode Island (freaking great, of course). Also saw Mike Patton again in Barcelona, when John Zorn was touring with his Moonchild "project".

Everything that has ever been combined has been combined. Dubstep seemed to be a fresh start but it has turned here in USA into a template/cliche based sound. Maybe dream-step and post-step will lead the way concerning new music.

Would have loved to have seen Faith No More...

Saw them at a festival on their "king For A Day" tour, they also did an amazing cover of Portishead's "Glory Box" with the double-bassist of "Soul Coughing", who later became Beth Orton's double-bassist.

It goes without saying that Faith No More were amzing live, but I would have liked to have seen them playing with fat Jim.

I think he played everything from memory...pretty much all of them did, although Mike Patton would "conduct" them occasionally. Only pieces from that first album were played at that concert, and all of it was very faithful to the recording, which amazed me. Imagine the discipline, for that kind of music!

It goes without saying that Faith No More were amzing live, but I would have liked to have seen them playing with fat Jim.

What ever happened to him? I never liked his playing that much (confirmed recently after a couple of weeks of listening to Angel Dust nonstop on the way to work). Still, he had a "presence" about him.

I think I remember he was fired...but my question was more in a "where are they now?" vein...

Adult Themes for Voice is a classic, by the way.

I think at this point I should be mentioning...Fred Frith.
