Logic Pro will ONLY open in 32 bit mode? [SOLVED]

Postby jlcnyc » Mon Apr 16, 2012 6:32 pm

I have a clone of my system drive. Due to problems today with Waves plugs on my system drive, I booted from my clone drive to work on an existing session. Curiously, Logic would ONLY open in 32 bit mode (?????). Whether I ticked or unticked the "open in 32 bit mode" box - Logic would not open in 64 bit
Any explanations? Would the clone cause this behavior?
Thanks in advance

From memory ( no longer at my studio)
I think I clicked on the session file? (but it's also possible that I clicked the Logic icon in the application folder - since I was at the "get info" window)
Does it matter? (thanks!)

Yes: if you double-click an app, you know exactly which app you're opening. If you double-click a document, you can't know for sure which app automatically opens. For all you know, it might be another version, for example the one on your clone.

Thanks for your help - sorry if I'm being unclear
I AM trying to run Logic from my CLONE drive
(I had rebooted my computer using the CLONE drive)

I keep a CLONE drive (of my system drive) just in case I experience any problems with the system drive
I'm currently having issues with corrupted Waves plug-ins on the system drive
so I was attempting to work from the CLONE drive until the system drive is sorted out.
(fyi - my session is located on a separate dedicated "AUDIO" drive)

Shouldn't Logic on the CLONE drive behave exactly like the Logic on the system drive?
(I thought it might ask for a serial number - but it didn't)
NO matter what I tried - CLONE Logic would only open in 32-bit mode!
Thanks again for your help

Hi there jlcnyc!

Could you please update your signature with your new system specifications?

I see you are running Lion. Try quitting by pressing Option - Command - Q instead of the regular Quit.
Now run the get info command ( Command - I ) on the Logic Pro.app in your clone and make sure that it is set to launch in 64-bit mode.
Re-open Logic

Thanks for the help
I rebooted my Mac Pro with the CLONE drive (a clone of my "system" drive created with Carbon Copy Cloner)
I opened Logic in 32 bit mode - I then followed your suggestion and used Option-Command -Q to quit Logic.
I went to the "get info" window. The 32-bit box was checked. I UNCHECKED the box and restarted Logic
Logic still opening in 32 bit mode. I went back to the "get info" window....
The "open in 32-bit" box was STILL UNchecked
Very curious

Wow that's really strange.
Did you open Logic by double-clicking on the same icon that you used to view and change information?

yep
weird huh???
I always heard to keep a clone of the system drive - so in case of problems, just boot up in clone and keep working
guess it's not quite that simple.
thanks anyway

HOLD THE PHONE!!!! - problem solved
The more I thought about it - I was using the Logic icon IN MY DOCK to open Logic - not the icon in the applications folder
This time it worked - Logic opened in 64 bit mode.
So the dock icon is 32/64 bit specific I guess??? - learned something new
thanks again for your help

Wow. That's great. I'm glad you finally solved the problem.
I think David proposed that you open by double - clicking on the app in the first place.

yeah I know
(I just kept thinking don't click on the actual session file - but my mind kept equating "dock icon" with "application folder" icon)
you know how it is - the mindless repetition after years of workflow!

(Now if I can just my "clear recent sessions menu" to stop reverting to an outdated list - AHHHH!!!!!!)

Mindless repetition happens to all of us. It can be very useful!
I replied to your other post too. I hope you get that solved.

Cheers,
