Help connecting Yamaha MOX6 to Logic Pro please!!

I have just purchased a MOX6 Yamaha keyboard, mostly for its wonderful sounds. I wish to record the sounds into Logic. (Until now I have only ever used the built in sounds in Logic.) I am having a terrible time trying to work out how to get the sounds from the keyboard into Logic. I can get the first 128 sounds (the 1st preset as they call it i.e. 1st bank) as they link to each channel in Logic when I assign an 'external midi' track channel to one of the MOX's program change channels. But I cannot access the other banks (presets) of sounds, which of course are the ones I want! Could anyone give me any tips. I have tried Yamaha's music help line and also Digital Village where I got the keyboard, but they couldn't assist! (The keyboard is connected by USB, and I believe I should be able to do this easily!!)

I have the MOX8 and I simple connect the L/R analog outputs to the line inputs on my audio interface. It's like TA DA!!!!

Now if you want to use it as a DAW controller or using Logic to control the MOX6, you are going to have to grab a coffee and spend some time in front of the unit reading what there is of the manual.

Put away all my long jack leads and midi cables etc! (I do have an Apogee Duet also for a microphone and could connect to that). Would I be recording in audio if I connected your way? I wanted to record in Midi if poss in case I needed to increase/decrease tempo etc and muck about with parts and sounds.

Ok,

Hook up the USB and Logic should ask if you wish to use the MOX as the interface. Confirm and change the output to whatever you want to hear playback on.

You can deal with MIDI by using the EXTERNAL Instrument selection as the input track.. Midi will get recorded. There are ways to get it back to the MOX or you can use the Apple synth for the midi sounds.

However, if you want to use the MOX as the midi controller use a software Instrument channel strip and select the instrument that way.

Hi there, sorry to be back so soon, I can manage the bits you have sent above, thank you. It's linking the sounds from the MOX6 to Logic tracks that I cannot do. Firstly i want to play back any sound from the keyboard into Logic, recording it as MIDI, and secondly, when a Logic file is saved I want it to communicate with the MOX6 when I open it back up again automatically and play and sound as it was originally recorded! I don't believe it can be this hard!! All I can get is one sound to play back on a single external instrument track, port 1 channel 1. When I try to allocate another sound to Port 1 Channel 2 it doesn't play back. And I have absolutely no idea how to get sounds from other presets (banks) to play on Logic at all. Only the first set of 128 sounds. I have read the manual from cover to cover, even phoned Yamaha technical music support, but they don't even know. Am sorely tempted to take my MOX6 back at the moment! Or throw it out the window! x Any further assistance greatly appreciated. You appear to be the only person in the whole with the same set up as me. (Which I don't believe. Surely Yamaha try their stuff out with Logic and all the other top DAWs? Don't they?) Thanks for listening to a frustrated muso with better things to do on this sunny evening!!

I apologize for misunderstanding what you were asking for.

Follow pg 52 to set up the MOX for recording to the computer. Then the 'Setting setting up the DAW' and Playback will be explained below.

Set up an audio track and click the 'I' button for monitoring. The input should be Input 1-2.

Let's do 2 tracks of external midi for now.

Make two external midi tracks and set the first external track to Port 1 Channel 1. To do this look at the Inspector column at the left of the screen. The top part is MIDI Thru, below that should be GM Device1. Click the disclosure triangle and let's set that to Port 1 - Channel 1.

Now select the 2nd External Midi track. The second ext track will be set to Port 1, channel 2.

Now back to the MOX ...

Click on the Pattern button, then the Mixing button.

Part 1 should be the default selection. So in LOGIC, select the 1st external midi channel track to arm it, then on the MOX choose your sound by hitting the bank switches (aha) and turning the Data wheel to the sound you like. Press record and record a few bars.

Now select track 2 in Logic, then back to the MOX, (still in the mixing screen) select PART SELECT 2. Once again select the bank and spin the wheel to find the next sound. Record it in Logic.

Now, Logic will send the midi info to the MOX and the MOX will play back up to 16 parts per pattern.

If this doesn't make sense, keep asking questions and we will get it right. You'll be doing this in your sleep in no time.

Thank you for this. I also found another way, although of course it may well be related! (Couldn't go to bed until solved one way or another). But I will try yours, as it may be the 'real way'! I went into Song mode on the MOX6, go to Mixing, set my sounds on different tracks in the mixer, then saved the song settings and named the song. I created as many external instruments parts as instruments I needed on Logic. Hey presto they link - channel links to channel! As long as I save the Logic file and the Song on MOX6 and make sure I put the right ones back with each other (name song and Logic file similarly) it works!! Thanks for your help (I sound a bit desperate in the last entry, apologies! New technology always gets me this way until I solve it!!)

Oh, and it's easy to copy the song, through job button, to save as another song setting with the same instruments. East then to just amend one or two. (I tend to stick with similar instruments to record the set of songs I am composing, to keep them sounding in a basically similar style, so this suits me well.)

Now, having said all that and thinking it was solved, I was monitoring it all through headphones plugged into my MOX6. This morning it still all links up in that way, but when I want to hear it out loud through my speakers (I have an apogee duet linking computer and speakers), I can only hear the Logic instrument tracks play back out of the speakers, not the MOX sounds!! I'm hoping this is just an audio setting problem! The MOX is connected just by the USB cable. Any ideas gratefully received!

OK, I have now plugged the speakers directly into the MOX output and can hear all the MOX sounds, played as recorded in Logic. But when I bounce the arrangement to make an audio version of my music, it only bounces the Logic track I have on there!

I guess you have two options at this point.

1.) Mix the levels using the MOX.
- or-
2.) Record each MOX sound individually to Logic on its own track.

I seem to remember reading that the MOX USB has the capability for 2 audio inputs and 4 audio outputs.

So depending on how complicated you want to get with processing and editing, it may be easier to leave the MOX sounds as they are except for the individual MOX levels. Once you have the levels set in the MOX, simply record the Audio Stereo from the MOX into Logic as that will be your pre-bounced mix. When you do the actual bounce, highlight and mute all midi regions so that only the final MOX stereo audio track is heard.

I think the level adjustments can be recorded within Logic via each midi channel's level control fader (automation).

Logic's audio prefs will be MOX as the input device and the Duet as the output device.

Hello there! I am back to just my USB cable to my iMac from the MOX6 and speakers connected directly to the keyboard. With in and out set to MOX I can hear everything at least! I got as far, from the place where I bought the blooming thing that I must record each MOX track to a separate audio track. There in lies the problem. Can you tell me how to record one MOX track to one audio track. I have created a blank audio track, but there is no reading of level in the audio channel strip. I presume I mute all other MOX tracks and Logic tracks, but have no idea how to record it to the audio track. (Normally I simply bounce all my Logic instr tracks down in one go, after mixing. And vocals register straight away through the mic connection. I've never had to record a track from an external inst before!! I can't believe it is this hard!!) I don't actually know how I would go about recording a single Logic internal inst track to an audio track, but I presume it must be the same way as doing the MOX track. So grateful if you can help. (I also cannot believe that Yamaha help have no idea about using Logic with the MOX!)

I am sitting in front of the MOX and the laptop connected only with the USB cable and I am monitoring thru the MOX headphones.

The core audio preference is set strictly to the MOX in and out.

Your Master volume of the MOX should be set to a comfortable level, and the slider next to it is the DAW level. The DAW level is for listening to the DAW playback and things like the click track.

Since you have indicated you want to record the midi notes, simple do as you have been doing. If you think the tempo is right you can record the actual audio along with the midi as you go along. This way isn't good because you risk re-recording all parts at the same time.

What you are left with is to record all the midi tracks.
Create an equal number of audio tracks.
Mute all but 1 recorded midi track and rec arm an audio track. Press record and let that track play/record thru.
Next, mute those tracks (audio and midi) and repeat the process with the second midi track and associated audio track.

When you are finished, you will have all your audio tracks recorded and you can mute all the midi tracks.

You would have to start from the beginning and make sure everything is set up right. So far it seems as though you have.


Let's try recording Audio only - no midi.

Make an audio track and rec arm it. The Input I/O should be Input 1-2 and the Output I/O should be Stereo Out. Play some notes and you should hear them. Record them. If every thing worked right, then move on to the next step of trouble shooting.

Erase the audio region you just recorded and select the midi track that you will record on.
Record the midi part . It should play back properly thru the MOX.

Next, use the Audio track from before and rec arm it and press record. The midi should play and the Audio should get recorded.

I have tried every I could to make it NOT work and I can't.

If this doesn't work for you, I would like you to describe step by step the general process you are going thru and we can locate the problem.

What ever you do, relax. It works and takes time to get used to delving into menus and sub menus without accidentally changing something along the way.

OK, I enabled a stereo audio track 1-2 and output Stereo Out. i tried to record some notes in on the armed audio track but nothing records and no signal shows in the track channel strip. The only thing that registers on the mixer output strip is the Logic metronome sound. (i can still record midi from the MOX however onto a new ext inst track.) On the Mox i have 'local off'. Makes no difference off or on, as far as I can see, to recording. I have tried setting up a completely new project in Logic, still no joy.
