Postby David » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:23 pm

Apple Says New Models, Designs for iMac, Mac Pro In Works, Due in 2013 (Update)

Here is the email sent by Apple CEO Tim Cook to a customer inquiring about the future of the Mac Pro:

Tim Cook wrote:Franz,

Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn’t have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today’s event, don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today.

We’ve been continuing to update Final Cut Pro X with revolutionary pro features like industry leading multi-cam support and we just updated Aperture with incredible new image adjustment features.

We also announced a MacBook Pro with a Retina Display that is a great solution for many pros.

I think they want us to know about the Mac Pros this far in advance so that we can start saving our money for it.

LOL.

Seriously though, apparently this Tim Cook email was the result of a group of professionals who started a petition and a facebook group etc... and ended up getting the attention of Apple.

The Mac line is still pocket change compared to the olden days! The Mac IIfx had a base retail price of $10,000!! And that was 1990 Bush Sr. dollars! I'm sure you can figure out what people thought IIfx stood for.

But at least it was a fast machine, and it was available. Sometime, maybe, later in 2013 we might see a Mac Pro redesign. I've never seen Apple pre-announce a product before. They must've miscalculated in thinking the pro market would happily double-down on 2010-era tech.

It has been noted, though, that he didn't specifically say the Mac Pro would get an update next year—just that "something really great" is coming...

Like my first hackintosh machine after waiting for 2 years of a real update to upgrade my 2006 MacPro...zzzz

really disappointed by Apple to leave us powerusers go to hacked systems just to use the latest gen plugins,,,

I aint gonna wait another year, and have this machine I use now die on me 2 weeks before the new one comes out somewhere 2013/14/15/16/17

Does anyone here feel that the new Mac Pro or "something great" release will come alongside a major Logic update?
(Logic has been absent among the other pro-app updates this week!)

Any thoughts?

But David Pogue said:

David Pogue wrote:An executive did assure me, however, that new MacPro designs are under way, probably for release in 2013.

My thought is that Logic could use an update, not a Retina Update. To me it seems the same procrastination in the Mac Pro line is felt in the Logic camp. In other words, they will get to it when they get to it.

Too little too late....

How the bleep can something with HW from 2010 can be called Pro in this superfast changing industry? I fell really let down by Apple.

We dont need glossy screens to make music, We need CPU cycles......

2013 yeah right.......like in DEC13...that can be 1,5 years away

I'm NOT saying people don't need new machines and that Apple is not behind with the MPs, but just curious about what's wrong with the latest machines? Mine is an 8-core 2,93GHz, 12Gb memory from 2 years ago and it's still screaming fast and my projects hit RARELY 50% of processor usage. Granted I don't use complex huge instrumentations, but still. Again, not meant in any kind of negative way, just asking 'cause I'm curious.

Then get a used one from 2009 or 2010 and you'll have more power than needed.

ive a quad i7 2700 3.5 Ghz/16GB RAM/256 SSD/1 TB HDD/2x DVI/FW400/800 coming in a weeks time for 1700 euro all installed in an old G5 tower....

This one will be more than enuf for the next 3-4 years.

Im not an apple hater, I love the OS and my old macpro, but I need to upgrade before this ones dies on me. And I just dont feel comfortable with a 2nd hand machine which I dont know the history in useage of.

And I am not the only one doing this route ATM now apple didnt update the MP line

When there is a great new mac pro line in 2015-2016 I will see again.

well Ive just ordered a MD770 June 2012 version with 12 GB RAM 256 SSD & 1TB HDD

Its alot more expensive, but then I am sure it will work 100% (ive got too much external hardware to take the gamble) And the hackintosh builder was lagging to much for me, so I cancelled that :D
