How to send Stereo ouput in logic to a silent bus [SOLVED]

Postby Clarinetdude » Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:02 am

Hi everyone,

I have a prettty standard ultrabeat track with a kick drum every 1st and 3rd beat which ordinarily outputs to stereo output.
In order to sidechain compress some tracks, I need to send the kick drum signal to a bus and then SILENCE the stereo output so I cannot hear it in the mix as I want the signal to ONLY go to a compressor on a pad.

How do I do this? I looked around on the net and couldn't find an answer so I am wondering if one of you could possible explain in detail how to do this.
I tried going to the bottom left in logic where the volume fader is for the track and 'right clicking' the stereo output to see if I had any options to ouput it to a bus, but no success.

I also tried using a send to a bus, but the problem is, the sound of the kick still comes through the mix.

Anyone who knows a solution, would be GREATLY appreciated. :D

Thanks a lot in advance!

You silence the bus by clicking on its' output slot and choosing NO output.

Thanks so much for this Erik!

Just a quick question-how do you select the bus from the stereo output itself-instead of a send?
I have had trouble finding this... Sorry for this stupid question :S

If you selected that bus as the Output for the Ultrabeat channel strip (I assume that is what you mean), then you wouldn't hear your kick anymore - so better use a pre-fader send for that.
Selecting the bus as in- OR output on any channel strip is pretty much the same procedure as outlined above...

Problem came up again. Sorry to bring this post back up
Just a question-my bus automatically routs to ‘Stereo Output’ under I/O every time I create a bus from the send on the kick drum. When I click on it-NO dialogue box appears so I can select No Output…
Anyone knows what I am doing wrong?

Try again, it should work. I mean I've never seen this not work. If you can't make it work, please post a screenshot with your mouse at the precise location where you click and hold the mouse button so we can see exactly what your channel strip looks like and where you're clicking?

Please do post screenshots if you need further help. Also try it in a brand new empty project factory template set up with a multi-out instrument, and see if you can make it work there?

Created a new blank project like you said David and everything seems to be working fine! Just the click and hold takes a little longer than expected (like 3-4 seconds) before the dialogue box opens. But anyway-JUST GLAD that it is finally working and I can choose what output I want!
Thanks for all the help everyone!
