Step Sequencer fom Computer Music magazine.

Postby Justin-Ch » Mon Jul 23, 2007 2:04 pm

This is a simple step sequencer built following instructions in the December 2006 issue of Computer Music magazine.

The sequencer itself is on Screenset 2. Logic needs to be playing with the metronome toggled on for the sequencer to work.

The sequencer plays a cycle of sixteenth steps to a bar on Logic's ESP synth, although obviously it can play any plug-in or external instrument.

The row of orange sliders sets the note pitch for each step.
The row of yellow buttons above that switch each step on or off.

It is as simple as that!

Screenset 1 is an Arrange page showing the only two Audio Objects in this Environment. The Instrument Channel & the Output. The Instrument needs to be the selected track for the sequencer to play whatever instrument you want in it. To record the sequence as a midi file, just press record!

Screenset 3 shows the sequencer with all its cabling revealed.

Now unfortunately I'm not experienced enough in the Environment to work out how to transfer this sequencer layer to a different Logic template & as I can't find the original magazine article I'm not totally sure how I even wired the sequencer into the Clicks & Ports layer. Hopefully someone with expertise in this area will be able to explain all this.

Let me know how you get on with it.

Here are some slightly more advanced sequencers from the Sound On Sound archives:

I tend to just experiment with things like this. If I get a pattern I like I'll either bounce it to a midi file or maybe record a long audio file of me tweaking it live, using AudioHijack. Then I'll use the results in a new song using a regular template.
