Each student will be provided a station with a 20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo and Logic Pro 8, and a MIDI Controller Keyboard. Although not required, it is highly recommended to bring your own set of headphones.
This course is intended for music producers and artists who already have some experience, and have a good understanding of Logic's basic features, and now want to further their skills in Electronic and Dance music production.
In two days, you will literally learn TONS of tips and tricks, tools of the trade and secrets of professional producers.
You will first be introduced to the various genres within Dance music, and the corresponding techniques (tempo, shuffle pattern, effects...).
You will then go straight to building tracks, using intermediate to advanced Logic Pro techniques to produce creative and exciting new sounds and beats.
A lot of emphasis will be on the design of a massive, punchy kick drum, a pumping bass line, and exhilarating "top sounds".
Day One: Intro, Sound Design & Composition
1-1 : Introduction to Dance Music styles
There are many types of dance and electronic music out there. We will discuss the various styles, tempos and ways to distinguish them.
1-2 : Samples or synthesis?
We will be discussing the difference, benefits, and drawbacks of using audio tracks versus virtual instrument tracks, and the differences between green/blue loops in loop browser.
1-3 : Preparation tips
Creating templates, channel strips, customizing the tool bar, etc.
1-4 : The Kick
We will be using various Logic synths and effects to create kicks and build "kick kits" with UltraBeat. We will also go over various effects to make kicks more punchy and hit harder.
1-5 : The Snare
We will be using a multi channel Ultra-Beat to create snare drums with various synthesis techniques, and extracting individual drum sounds from a loop with the marquee tool.
1-6 : Hi Hats
Hi Hats create the excitement and energy in a track. We will be creating hats in a multi channel Ultra-beat, sequencing them in the Hyper and Matrix editor, and applying effects to them individually.
1-7 : Drum and percussion loops
We will be chopping up loops and rearranging the pieces. Using strip silence, building an EXS24 instrument full of loop slices, adding loops to the apple loop window, looking at some great third party plug-ins, and much more.
1-8 : Bass
We will be using various Logic and third party synthesizers to create great sounding basses. Go deep into side chaining, the Matrix editor, sequencing and bussing, and looking at the relationship between the bass and kick with a spectrum analyzer.
1-9 : Lead melodies and rhythm synths
We have a ton of great stuff to cover here; Synthesis and the vector envelope in ES2, Sculpture, Side Chaining in the EVOC20, creating arpeggios, and various third party plug-ins and effects.
1-10 : Sequencing
We will cover tips on recording MIDI parts, editing in the Matrix Editor, Transform window, Quantizing, Un-quantizing, UltraBeat's full view, Automation, and so much more.
- Questions & Answers -
Day Two: Sound Design, Arranging, Mixing & Mastering
2-1 : Recap of yesterday & Q & A
The title say it all!
2-2 : Pads and Ambient tones
We will be learning Sculpture, Logic's incredible physical modeling software instrument, stretching techniques in the arrange window, third party synths, and if time allows, my favorite compliment to Logic; Metasynth.
2-3 : Sound Effects
We will create various types of sound effects like sweeps and adding sampled voices.
2-4 : Organization
Before you start to organize your song, it's important to start out with ... organization. In this I'll be showing ways to tame the craziness while arranging.
2-5 : Arranging Tools
We will experiment with the various tools and key commands you'll use in Logic for arranging.
2-6 : Structuring the song
We will uncover various techniques on getting a song laid out.
2-7 : Drum rolls and crashes
We will be diving into the Matrix and Hyper editor to add drum rolls and crashes.
2-8 : Building Tension with breaks/drop outs
Strangely enough, removing sounds can be the most vital part to building tension in a song: Less is more! You will learn to generate excitement in your tracks by judiciously dropping specific elements at specific times.
2-9 : Using Effects Creatively
So the song is pretty much composed and arranged. You will discover fun ways to make repetition not sound so repetitious!
2-10 : Adding Variation and randomness
Your track is almost there! But sometimes small touches can make the difference. You will be adding variation to regions, and learning to use the Transform window to speed up your work flow.
2-11 : Mixing
You will learn how to group tracks, use control surfaces, automate your mix, pan & position sounds, and use Logic or third party effects to help lift up your mix.
2-12 : Mastering In Logic
You will learn to choose the right settings for bouncing your song. You will be introduced to Logic's mastering tools like the Multi-pressor, Limiting, EQ, and third party mastering tools.
