David Nahmani
MIDI is just "note on" information.. you need an instrument to play the notes. If you only use soft synths, then you need to put the MIDI Regions onto Audio Instrument Tracks and instantiate soft synths on them in order to hear anything. j
i was under sum mad illusion that these can be played with general midi/quicktime instruments? if it says tenor sax / muted quitar or whatever ... is it not refering to general midi sounds or sumthing? i mean, they play in safari, so what sounds are they accessing .... and how do i get them up in logic? ta x
dave
It does play general midi sounds through the quicktime synth. You'll need to cable it in the envoirment. I'll see if i can post a pic up shortly on how to do this...

dave
Ok just tried this out, as i never use this so hopefully it will work the same for you..... Start up logic and goto the file menu at the top to open your midi file. You should then see your file laid out on the arrange on the midi channels. Goto the windows menu at the top and go down to select the envoirment page. You should then select midi inst in the menu on the left. it will probably say audio at first so you need to change it. You should then see drums mapped cabled to GM device. Goto the menu in this window and goto the new menu, and look for internal. In there will be the apple quictime synth wich you need to select. Once done you will need to cable this to the GM Device. with the arrow tool select the little notch on the GM device and drag the cable towards the quicktime synth, and your done. Hope that helps, but im sure there are other ways of doing this, and this might not be right. Im quite sure there is some more in depth details in the manual which i recommend checking out. David Nahmani
You can also instantiate a Quicktime synth as an AU plug-in on an Audio Instrument Track.
j
thats for that i did everything as you said and now seem to have the instrument tracks playing the quicktime /general midi synth ... however it just like a bunch of drunk musicians. sum of the tracks are playin the right sounds, but sum arent. basically its not sounding like it does previewed in the finder. i shudnt hav to assign the right sounds to to every track shud i? its also at the wrong speed. the finder can seem to do it ... all on its own. grr
j
if anyones bored enough ... heres the midi file as an attatchment. all 4k of it. its a dub style song, and was free to download from ye old internet. basically i was going to open it up and see how the rythms were made etc etc which would hopefully help me learn sum things but as is, its just a mess. 02_Lets_give_thanks_and_praise_in_Dub.mid.zip

dave
Ok this should work for you. let me know how you get on. I saved it as a logic file, so it should open straight away. I also changed the tempo. i believe it should have been 80bpm, and not 160? Lets_give_thanks_80bpm.lso
j
ahh bloody brilliant thanks man!! 8) can i ask what u did, bcos it looks nothing like when i imported it. i cant really understand how u got each midi track to play the right sound. + how u knew the correct tempo etc i hav loads of these files & i always thought they wud load up in any sequencer, without any hassle. cheers ~ j ~
j
ahh i think ive got it. u just 'open' the files ive been 'importing' them. duh anyway id hav never hav sorted it without yor help. or creating the new quicktime object malarky. thanks 4 yor time dave! gold star for you x
dave
Strange, i think there is a difference though between importing, and opening a file, but i could be wrong! I just opened the file and connected the quicktime synth. However there was a problem with the notes on track 2. If you look at the original file you will see the very first notes run right along the length of the midi file. If you look at the new file you will see what i have done to them. As for the tempo for some strange reason it was made in 160bpm. so i just selected all the notes in the arrange, and used the transform feature to double the speed, and the slowed down the main sequencer to 80bpm, because its obvious dub music is not at the same tempo as Drum & Bass
j
yea i get that problem ..... the long notes in track 2 easily fixed as you say. i duno, sumtimes i write stuff at double tempo. cant u get a greater number steps in a bar / resolution, is that the tech term? i dunno its great in reason running the step sequencer or dr rex at twice the speed of the song etc. but yeah, for this simple dub midi file ... not really much point ta x
dave
In the matrix editor, to increase the resoloution for more steps, jus change it from 16 to 32, and so on.Its located on the left. I think this is what you mean. No need to write at double the tempo! http://www2.potsdam.edu/studni42/images/logic/matrix.jpg
