L8 Automation Mode = "?" (and other) Bugs

I've been running into the following problem primarily with L7 songs opened in L8, but started to see the same behavior in original L8 songs as well.

PROBLEM: sometimes the automation mode on a track will change from TOUCH to "?" (literally, a question mark). Other times, after adjusting automation nodes manually, the mode will change from TOUCH to READ (or, on occasion, OFF) but the GUI still reports TOUCH for that track.

The "?" Bug

What causes it? Not sure...

The "GUI lies about the current automation mode after changing it on its own" Bug

Step 1. Here we see a screenshot of a track with redundant nodes at the end

Step 2. Here I've manually deleted one of the redundant nodes. NOTE THE AUTOMATION MODE displayed for the track:

Step 3. At this point it's not possible to write automation to the track, even though the mode says TOUCH. This is because the GUI is lying. It's really set to READ. Click/holding on the automation mode menu confirms this.

What causes it? In this case, manually deleting nodes at or near the END of a track, and after the region's end. This behavior may or may not happen if the nodes being modified are earlier in the track.

Clearly this behavior needs to be fixed ASAP.

I get both of these errors. I draw my automation with either a Mighty Mouse or a graphics tablet. These errors occur regardless of whether the track is playing or not. I have never used a Logic 7 song in Logic 8 except to see if it opens, so these are all native Logic 8 sessions. I'm on a dual 2.0 GHz G5, 4.5 gigs of ram, OS 10.4.11.

Once the problem begins, it happens a lot. Sometimes never. Usually when the virtual instruments are used a lot. It does seem VI related, but thats just a vibe/suspicion. It also seems to happen when I'm working with a quicktime, but thats almost always, so it's hard to say if it happens without.
