I found this on the Apogee page:

It’s an accepted “best practice” of most audio software providers that audio files should be recorded on a hard drive other than the Mac’s Startup drive (i.e. the drive on which the operating system is installed). You can probably get away with recording a few tracks to your computer’s Startup disk, but for the best performance of your GiO recording system, record onto a separate ATA/IDE, SATA, or FireWire drive whose spindle speed is at least 7200 RPM.

My questions are:

1. Do you agree with the above statement?

2. Since all I am using is a MacBook Pro 15" with 4GB Ram, do I need to purchase another external hard drive?

Appreciate any and all comments. Thanks!

Dana

A couple tracks. No big thing. Cool A few more usually is a serious issue. Not recommended. Sad

I'm no expert on the subject but I can tell you what's worked successfully for me for the last 1 1/2 years. I'm running an iMac. There is only 1 FW port. I use a Firebox interface which is FW. So, to run an ext. HD, I have to connect it to the extra FW port on the Firebox. Therefore, I record directly to my internal HD because when I've tried to play projects from my ext. HD I experience latency issues. I use two Glyphs to a Hub to the Firebox for Time Machine and Drag and Drop backups only. I hope this helps.

1. Yes.

2. Not necessarily. It depends on how intensive HD use you need, and how important portability is for you. I would work on the internal untill you start feeling limited by the HD performance: no need buying extra gear when you don't even know if you need it yet.
