Logic Pro 9 freezing/pausing before playback

Hey guys

 

I have logic 9.1.1 and a shiny new 27" i7 imac with 8gb ram.

 

I also have a fireface 400 attached via a 800 to 400 cable.

 

 

My issue is, randomly when im working on a song, if i hit space to stop the song and then return to go to the beginning of the song and press space again logic just freezes for about 3 seconds then plays the track, the whole computer doesnt freeze as other apps continue to run and ive had activity monitor open watching it while this happens but cant find the cause.

 

Do you guys have any ideas?

 

 

My 2007 macbook pro with 4gb never had this issue.

I get that 1-2 seconds random freeze too at playback. Don't know exactly what's going on.

 

Did you use an RME card with the other Mac? Or an older version of Logic?

i had the same RME card on my macbook pro.

 

Im beginning to tihnk its the hard drive on the imac.

 

Even when i told the imac to use the built in audio it still does it so that removes the rme from the equation.

well i cant recall if it happened in 10.6.2 or any previous version of logic....arggg!

it also does it in the browser when flicking through samples

something else to think about is that it never happened on my 10.5.8 hackintosh and never happened on my macbook pro running 10.6.2...dunno if there is a link there

I use 10.5.8 so it's not related to 10.6.x.

Im also thinking it could be a plugin that im running....ill go through tonight and turn off all the plugs on my tracks one by one and test.

What plug-ins are you using? I don't think that's it though.

 

It's something that didn't happen in Logic 8 or on my G5 but I don't know exactly why this happens now.

Yes I have the exact same issue as you show in your videos. I'll have to play around a bit to see why that is since it's a bit annoying.

 

Seems to be a hard disk access issue then? I don't think it's directly related to the physical hard disk more like some kind of software/system issue in relation to hard disk access.

you have a mac pro?

 

if so you have much faster disks than i do, what else do you have running in the background of osx? spotlight?

Spotlight is running yes. Nothing else.

 

Do you have journaling enabled on your hard disk?

 

I have journaling enabled on my system but not on my audio drive.

 

I get the exact same behaviour as shown in both your videos.

its weird that my 2007 macbook pro doesnt do it...

Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon with 8 Gb of RAM

System disk is a 600 Gb drive and audio disk is a 1 TB drive SATA2.

 

I've tried watching the activity monitor when the problem occurs but there's nothing to see there that would indicate why.

 

What about journaling on your hard disk?

My hdd is journaled, but so is my macbook pro... i dont think journalling has anything to do with it, i bought idefrag today, im gonna try a defrag and see if it helps, ive already ran disk warrior over it to see if there were any problems, there were issues but it didnt solve the problem,

 

 

can you please do this,

 

do 10 xbench hard disk benchmarks one after another, paste your highest and your lowest. are they all the same?

 

mine will go from around 168 then could dip to 40 over 10 benches.

Generally defragging isn't needed on OS X or could produce worse results.

 

I'll do an XBench in a sec.

I did 10 tests and all were almost identical. Lowest score 68.01 to highest score 70.56, on the system disk. Same picture on the audio HD, just 2 points lower on average.

 

Starts around 160 and then once the random writes begin it'll drop drastically to around 40 and then climb a bit up to just below 70.

i did 6 tests, i got 66, 65, 67, 68, 75, 68...hmm

 

 

I just transferred some samples to an external firewire drive, did the same thing, which makes me think its either something to do with osx or logic...

I just fired up ableton live 8 and scrolled through the sample library and it didnt glitch so its either related logic and or osx or both....

Yes it does, I mentioned this earlier.

I am still having this issue, i think it might be time to reformat and reinstall osx.
