Awake Live Mode ON Tip

Recommended Posts

Regarding the current "hot" topic "Live mode OFF" this tip is quite relative and might be useful for some people, that's why I decided to post it as stand alone topic.

This method combines some features (useful for live play Multi Player Mode mode), though it can be used in Normal mode (combining a small Enviro tool which offers another way of selecting the Instruments using Program Change messages apart of the channel strip performance ones etc ).

The Conditions

1. If you have noted carefully the Live mode is activated when you run Logic (hit play), i.e the current selected track is armed while the other ones are reset to "Live mode Off'.

2. The second condition is when you select a track Logic sends a "Panic" reset (127 Note OFF messages) to the previous track to kill any Note ONs if any.! This is invisible for you, but it is a fact ! There is a better way emulating the hardware multi-timbral devices patch "smooth" change which I will comment in another article probably...

The Theory

According to some known tips, it is recommended to send some "neutral" midi event like pitch bend, mod wheel, sustain pedal to awake the current track Live mode. It is nice idea but difficult to perform cause the musician must thing for the performance rather than sending some awake data in advance.

Imagine if there is a way Logic to send this "Awake" data to 16 midi channels when you hit play automatically !

This can be done if enable the "Multi Player" mode ( Logic Settings ->Recording ->MIDI->Auto demix by midi channel ...) and send a "Dummy Awake" data sequence which contains 16 messages which are set to ch.1-16 so they can awake the all 16 channels in one shot. Midi chase is required here as well (see below) !

About the Logic Template

You can get it from the Attachment below, where I have prepared some things like:

1. Wake Up "awake" Standard Instrument object (set to IAC port), plus an Arrange track for it which sends "Awake Data" to the all 16 channels. The "Awake" data supports "Midi Chase" so it works in any "Play" command ! You can mute this track any time to toggle between the default Live mode OFF and the Live mode ON tip any time ( it is shown in the Quick Video below !

2. The Standard Instrument "Wake up data" object is set to "Instrument Without Midi Thru Function" in the Settings as you see in the pic below to prevent any midi feedback via IAC...

3. The Physical Input in this template is not cabled form the "SUM" pin !!! You must set your cables according your floating devices as shown. I.e the IAC port must be split out from the other ports, so here we combine Multi Player mode with Normal one using the new macro tool labeled as "Tracks Control" see the video below.

4. The "TRACKS CONTROL" Macro elements are shown in the pic, but to understand the "Normal" mode you must keep in mind the new Logic track selection theory !

Cause the "Multi Player" mode is activated in the Logic Settings and the Logic sequencer channelizes the incoming midi to 16 channels, we need to select the tracks from the blue "Select Instrument" text fader box. You can double click it and type the Instrument Patch name as well !.

The "Select Instrument" box supports external Program Change control using channels 2-16 and PC 1-16.

5. When change an Instrument (in Normal Mode) the previous one will be reset if there are any sustained Note On(s) to behave as the "Conditions" (See above) !

In "Multi Player" Ch. Mode (the green fader) you must use external device controllers set to different midi channels to play the different Logic Software Instruments like it should be .

6. The all 16 Instruments use a Group labeled as "Rec" - using Rec. Enable Setting only. If want to Group them differently, create a new Group and enable other group controls plus the "rec" one !

In any of the modes the new "Awake" Live mode Tip can be used, cause it will send automatically "Awake data" to the all Instruments. It can be disabled by muting the "Awake Data track" any time.

P.S I have inserted random Logic native Software Instruments just for the experiment. You can change them any time...

It is just an experiment Theory & Template and any updates or recommendations are welcome !

Here are some updates to the previous version which are related to the Macro "Tracks Control". The update gives more flexibility using external controlling of the "Select Instrument" text fader in the hybrid "Normal" mode only, using three types of external control messages like:

1. Program Change (PC) using ch.2-16 and values 1-16 to recall Instruments 1-16. In this update PC using ch.1 passes thru so you can use Logic PC for Channel Strip performances. All above PC 17 pass thru as well for ch.2-16.

2. New CC# assign fader is added next to the blue ""Select Instrument" text fader so you can roll/select the Instruments using Continuos external control pedal, fader or knob using default value 0-127.

Note: I have created internal mapper which divides the incoming 0-127 values, so you can switch/roll the instruments smoothly using the full incoming range of a fader, knob or pedal etc. Pedal usage is recommended here !

3. Note Key Switching. Here you can set the new yellow text fader labeled as "Base PC Key" (Base Program Change Key) to assign a note base range (16 notes) for the key-switchers i.e C-0 = Instr.1, C#-0= Instr.2 etc regarding the example setting shown in the pic below.

Note: when the ON/OFF button is set to ON, the Key Switching is enabled and all following 16 notes above the "Base PC Key Note" will be used as key switchers !
