  1. Thank you for clarifying. What you said about VCA makes sense to me as well. Thanks for responding!
  2. Thanks David! I'm enjoying learning and just finished Lesson 3!
  3. Hi all, I just completed Lesson 3 in Logic Pro X 10.5. I'm really enjoying learning all of this! My question surrounds how Summing Stack work with software instruments/midi data/busses etc.. I think I understand it, but would appreciate clarification or correction if I don't quite have it. I've searched through the forums and read up on busses, aux channels, and on the way learned about VCAs, and the difference between summing stacks and folder stacks. Okay. So using the Lesson 3 track names and how everything is setup - this is how I understand how everything is routed, and where I get confused: The Summing Stack, Track 5, "Layered Arp" contains the midi data and routes it to both the Track 6 "Lead Synth" and Track 7 "Synth Double" (I assume this just happens in the background?). Track 6 receives the midi data and routes it to the MIDI FX "Arp", which then routes it to the software instrument "Alchemy" (which converts the midi data to audio), which Sends the the audio signal through Bus 1, where it's received via input by Aux channel named "Reverb", which routes the signal to Audio FX, Space Designer, which routes it to Audio FX, Channel EQ, which outputs the signal to Stereo Out. Here's where I start to get confused. Track 6 outputs its signal to Bus 4 (the book says Bus 2 but it's not a big deal because Bus 2 is being used by by Track 4, "Gtr Harmonics"), where it's received via input by Summing Stack, Track 5, "Layered Arp" which outputs the signal to Stereo Out. I thought that because Track 5, "Layered Arp", is receiving the input of Bus 4 (which has the output of Track 6 before Audio FX is applied), then it would only be controlling the dry audio. But when I lower the fader on Summing Stack, Track 5, "Layered Arp" - both the dry audio, and the wet audio, are lowered. So I guess that's what I'm confused about how does the Summing Stack, Track 5, "Layered Arp" control/take priority over/influence Track 6 and it's signal that's sent through Bus 1 for Audio FX processing? I guess the question from a practical standpoint would be, is this how I should approach the faders/knob? Track 6, "Lead Synth" - the fader increases or decreases both the dry and wet audio signal. Track 6, "Lead Synth" - the Bus 1 knob increases or decreases the wet audio signal. Summing Stack, Track 5, "Layered Arp" - it's fader changes the dry and wet audio signal of every sub track in it's stack (similar to like how a VCA would function?) Thanks for your help clarifying this in my head. I think I'm almost there to understanding how it works. - David p.s. Also, for parallel processing, as described in Chapter 3, is there a way to send a signal via Bus for Audio FX, but only have the wet signal, and completely remove the dry signal?
  4. Aw Craig, I'm so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law . Dementia is the worst. I can relate to what you said - my mom worked with numbers a lot and that was one of the first places we saw her struggle. It was a really frustrating experience for her too - and for us to witness as well. I sent you a DM as well. I'm looking forward to learning from the experience of everyone here! Thanks for the welcome! - David
  5. Hi all, My name's David, and I just wanted to introduce myself. I just purchased David Nahmani's Logic Pro X 10.5 book and am going to go through it chapter by chapter. I'm very nervous and excited and now I'm going to probably overshare, really, in hopes to make some connections to like-minded people as I step forward into making music. I always believe heart speaks to heart. I'm 35 years old, and well, my mom died 2 months ago today, after a 4 year battle with early onset Alzheimer's. I'm still grieving and I am exhausted. This poem - "A Blessing For One Who Is Exhausted" by John O'Donohue - depicts the current state of my spirit. (It's easy to find on the web but here's a link to the poem that keeps it line breaks intact on a mobile device - https://m.dailygood.org/story/734/a-blessing-for-one-who-is-exhausted-john-o-donohue/ ). I realized with my Mom's passing, that life is too unpredictable. And so with whatever time I have left, I'd like to do more things I enjoy doing. I've always enjoyed composing music since I was a teen, but I was raised in a pretty strict household with a bully for a Dad, and so I played a religious role to survive. But I kept playing that role, even after I left home, without asking if that's what I want to do. I also got diagnosed with ADHD several years ago, and so I'm learning how to better manage that - so I'm sorry in advance if I forget to reply to a post! I guess on a whole, I am deeply afraid to try things I enjoy, so this is me stepping out, and any encouragement on this musical journey is much appreciative. I plan to use logic to create some electro-house, but also have some friends with amazing voices - so looking to also use Logic for recording and producing music with them. I think I might document my journey somewhere, if anything for my sake, so I can remember tips and tricks that are really helpful to me. Anyways, "Thanks for Listening Children!" (Fallout fans will hear this with Three Dogs voice) - David
