  1. Hi fisherking, Thanks for getting back to me. That sounds like it involves importing the audio from the movie file into my project correct? If possible, I'm trying to avoid doing that as I have created a project for each cue in this film meaning I want to just solo the left channel of the audio embedded in the movie file and slide it left and right without having to worry about an SMPTE-locked audio file (there's a bug in Logic that only lets you drag the audio to negative 8 bars, which is why I'm trying to leave the audio in the movie file). Let me know if that makes no sense! Thanks, mn
  2. Hi, I've been passed a 'split audio' movie file and trying to avoid importing the audio from it. Is there a way to playback only the left channel so I can hear just the SFX and narration etc. without importing the audio to my project? Thanks, mn
  3. Hi there, I'm burning up in my studio and wondering what the best way is to keep the room cool yet silent? From searches online, it looks difficult to do other than spending thousands of pounds on an elaborate air conditioning system that separates noise from the cold air. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can do this (ideally on the cheap!)? Thanks, mn
  4. Before I start: I know I know, never use just your cans for mixing and mastering, but I need to in this case as I'll be away from my monitors for a while. I'm currently using Sennheiser HD600's and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's to try and mix with but find that the bass is lacking on the HD600's and the DT770 Pro's don't really help much with that either, I find them a bit 'muddy' to try and work with these days and my mixes sound pretty rubbish when they're translated. Are there any (preferably closed) headphones that are good at representing bass that I should get hold of to try and polyfill this gap while I'm on the move? Are any of the AKG's out there any good? In terms of budget, I'm not looking for anything cheapo, I'm happy to invest if they'll last me for a while and cover my needs. Thanks for any tips.
  5. I've also got the HD600's and they're great, although I'm about to open a new question to find out what headphones would be best for checking the bass against as I find the HD600's lack in that area, at least for getting a good idea of bass levels in relation to the rest of your mix.
  6. Hi @skijumptoes, will check that out, although it seems playing around with the buffer settings and disabling plugins on each channel strip the instrument is connected with has helped loads - see below. @JamieLang, thanks so much for this, you're totally right that I need to look at the fundamentals of why this works the way it does in Logic. I've kept everything to a minimum on each channel strip and have been disabling plugins on the master bus as well as aux's / buses while I play in my parts which has helped. I've also upped the buffer rate to 256 which has also helped. Here's a quick video where I enabled Voices of Passion in Play on one channel (this is without disabling EWQL Spaces reverb) and literally played as many notes as a could to 'stress test' things. I know this is a small template, but it's only the single thread / core that's the issue as you can see by the low activity on the other cores so I should be able to load things up more: Even though one core was more active than the others, I was able to do so without glitches. Disabling EWQL Spaces brought it down to about 25% activity on that core which is great as I can definitely score with this kind of set up now. Thanks for all your help, marking as solved. Cato
  7. Hi Eric, Play is the same as Kontakt i.e. I'm using a single instance per track and my project is 48khz. I tried upping the samples to 128 and it's helped a bit, but I'm still getting spikes unfortunately... anything else I could try?
  8. Ah, I need to update my signature - I don't have that anymore! My Mac Pro suffers from the same issue, but is on a different Mac OSX and Logic version. The Mac Mini is what I use a fair amount as I'm on the move a lot.
  9. Hi, I've been trying to find a solution to this for years now and really struggling as nothing seems to work. Record-enabling a track absolutely murders a single core of my quad Mac Mini (on Mac OSX High Sierra using an Apollo Twin soundcard and Blackmagic Multidock with Samsung EVO SSD's and Logic 10.4) making it almost impossible to score as things glitch out to the point everything is out of sync or the project stops and I lose the MIDI I've just recorded. I've got 16gb RAM, but this appears to be a Logic issue rather than hardware from what I've been reading. So far, I've tried: - Using VEPro with multi-timbral instances of Kontakt (this reduced the load, but I still have the same issue) - Using various aux tracks to route my effects etc. so they're not on single channel strips as recommended by Apple - Switching from using VEPro instances to using single AU instances like one instrument per Kontakt / PLAY / UVI etc. - Playing with the buffer settings (currently on 64) - Switching off Kontakt's multi-thread option - Setting Logic's Processing threads to 8 and Multithreading to Playback & Live Tracks Even when idle, one of my core's is diddling about at around half-way: I've recorded a screencast so you can see what I'm referring to here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/dBeRaq3vmQE And with a fresh project with just a few instances and maybe EWQL Space's loaded up for the reverb I see the same problems. Does anyone have any idea what I can try? It's totally destroying my workflow as I try to score to picture. Thanks, Cato
  10. Haha, yes, you're right I'll update this thread with my findings once I've set everything up in case it's of use to other reading.
  11. No, I mean streaming samples - the Blackmagic I was referring to is the Thunderbolt SSD Multidock they offer which I planned to use with libraries like Albion, Symphobia etc. However, I'm wondering if USB3 can be used instead of that on my old non-thunderbolt Mac Pro...
  12. Thanks for getting back to me triplets - I had a chat with OWC earlier and they said the same thing, so frustrating as it seems like my Mac Pro is well into the 'useless' category when it comes to selling it. What do you tend to do with old machines like this? Use them as slaves until they conk out? Cheers for the tip on the card, that could be useful for giving the machine a bit more mileage for the next year or two at least! I stream samples for orchestral mock ups so wanted to get a Blackmagic with some SSD's to stream from, but obviously I can't use that on my old Mac Pro. Streaming from USB3 must be a big no-no right?
  13. Hi, I'm on Mavericks with my old Mac Pro at the moment but want to upgrade to Sierra. Is there anything I should be aware of before starting the process? My biggest concern is that I have a Firewire 800 Apogee Ensemble and I understand Sierra doesn't recognise FW anymore, but are there any other known issues I should know about as well? Obviously, I'll need to upgrade all my apps. The Mid-2010 also doesn't have a Thunderbolt port and only USB2, so thinking that as well as upgrading to Sierra, I should get something like this Caldigit card so that I have more options for attaching external drives etc. - seems like it adds a USB-C port so in theory I assume I could use OWC's new Thunderbolt 3 Hub to get more ports right? Either that, or sell the whole thing and buy a new machine! Being a composer is expensive... Thanks for any advice. MN
  14. Basically, it's as if it stutters on playback - as well as music, I also record voice overs which is why I notice the glitches more as it feels like the voice over is 'cut up' a little bit in places. I wasn't experiencing this with the version of Logic before it had a 'face lift' (I think it was version 10.2.x?)
  15. Thanks for getting back to me - I'm bouncing to a 24bit 48khz wav file (same as the project settings so no change to the sample rate when rendering). Unfortunately, I seem to get the same result, albeit sporadic i.e. it doesn't always render a glitch like nev12 is experiencing. I have little space left on my HD (45gb of 500gb), so I'm going to try clearing out a load of stuff and repairing permissions as I expect that might be having an effect too...
