  1. Sorry to be a bit blunt, but why don't you try them or consult the manual?
  2. I generally run the latest greatest version, even though some warn against it. I can say on my MacBook Pro C2D 2.33 that 10.5.2 is as stable as any of the OS X 10.4.6 onwards. All my plugins work just fine... Clean install generally works for me. 10.5.2 as a whole is rock solid up to now! *shrugs*
  3. I have to say in my personal experience, I've found that software users often over-react as well. While I'm not saying Logic Pro 8 is bug-free, I've seen the odd user in real life going off about how unusable Logic is etc., meanwhile when I work on their system I do get the bug they refer to, but its often a minor thing! Something that can be worked around. Sure its an inconvenience... Most often than not however, most users' problems seem to creep in outside of Logic itself. There are several little utilities and all sorts of junk that people install that does indeed cause problems. Probably more of an issue on windows but that aside... There is one golden rule to a DAW... If your primary use of a computer is audio then don't ever install things that do not relate to the purpose built functionality of your digital audio workstation. I only install the few things on my macbook pro that i really need other than logic and personally my Logic Pro 8 is perfectly functional, i'd say 99% stable!
  4. To be fair, read below to see why. But the easiest way is going to use the studio's Mac Pro with PT, which is hopefully already set up and configured for surround! Well its a bit tricky to answer all of this. What I can say is that the optical out of your MBP is of no use to you as it is NOT ADAT format. Not sure where people get this idea that the MBP optical out can do miracles?!?! If you read your specifications you'll notice its SP/DIF, which is a two-channel format. With regards to making use of Logic Pro 8 for mixing. You need to have a decent audio interface with six outputs for 5.1 surround. Which you'll either need to feed into the DM1000 and set up the Yamaha accordingly or you'll need to connect your outputs directly to the 5.1 studio monitors. The latter might or might not be the best option, will depend on the audio interface you connect to your MBP. To be quite honest what you're asking is actually rather complicated. As making use of the DM1000 will only really mean using it as a control surface for Logic if you want to mix inside of Logic. As soon as you start feeding multiple channels of audio (like separate dialogue or stems etc etc) into the DM1000, you'll start to mix more on the Yamaha than on Logic. That will mean having knowledge of the DM1000's surround mixing capability. Mixing in surround is also no easy task. It's a whole different ball-game compared to stereo. So good luck! You can't use PT as an audio interface. Best advice. Use the setup there as is and just drop your audio files into PT and have the resident engineer/owner close by for assistance... sound's like you'll need it!
  5. You can always press Option+K, this will give you the key commands window within logic, which has a search box at the top
  6. Hello mate, the problem you have was covered a while ago...have a look here. http://www.logicprohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=19207&highlight=&sid=147b015d87a5fde218a38d72d4e743a8 That should sort out your problem. It's a bug in Logic 8.0.1 by the way...
  7. Hi I've got a question regarding the project folder of logic projects. When ever I save a project to a certain location and I click the 'project' icon in the Logic Browser. It never goes to the actual project folder. It only goes to Users/HJL/Music/Logic... Is there a way to change this so that the default location is different. I save my projects on a different location, but this seems to break the 'project' button? I would think that this should be a project setting and not a global button... Any thoughts on this? Thanks
  8. The iTunes 'exciter' that you talk about, are you referring to the Sound Enhancer option in iTunes itself? If so, the only reason why such a thing even exist really is probably to make the standard built-in speakers on the macs 'sound' cooler. To be honest, as it was turned on by default first time round when I listened something on my MacBook Pro speakers, I thought.... mmm this sounds pretty good given the speakers that's got built-in. However, personally I hate the iTunes 'exciter'. I feel that it makes music sound unnatural and weird. On my studio setup it feels very wrong. Just enabled it again and it changes the balance of hi-hats in relation to the song etc. I don't like it one bit. I prefer to listen to the music the way it was made to be by its creator. I think its bad for you if you listen to music with this on...you get a dodgy perception of how music should sound *shrugs* On the mixing issue. Using wide panning or the 'directional mixer' with appropriate reverb and delay you can create very wide elements in your mixes. If you want to go a LOT wider... well then consider mixing in 5.1 or whichever surround format you like Remember stereo width as you perceive it from your listening position, is very much based on how far apart your speakers are and how the room influence their sound.
  9. Hi there On page 262-264 you create a Apple Loop from a selection. However for some strange reason I have the following problem... I read this section probably 3 times now and checked the Logic Manual, but not having any luck. I selected the section as explained in the book and my help tag DEFINITELY says 5 1 1 1 7 1 1 1. I then click the section and it cuts... all working fine. When I choose Region > Add to Apple Loops Library, the type area stays on One-shot with the it greyed out. I'm aware that this happens when you don't have a region that has a whole integer for the number of bars. But dear me... even if I click to resize the help tag reads 2 0 0 0. So its definitely 2 bars long, exactly. At least that's what it says... The funny thing is, when I resize this region to 1 bar and back to 2 bars. (set to snap to bar, to be sure) the help tag reads differently. When its resized back to 2 bars, and I click to resize, the help tag reads like this.... 1 3 3 239 UPDATE: While typing this I noticed 'snap to absolute' values were not ticked in the snap menu. This solved my problem. *mmm not sure how that got unticked, oh well!* Quite strange none the less as the help tag does read 2 0 0 0 after cutting the section with the marquee tool. So maybe the help tag is lying to me... bug perhaps? Posting anyway, just in case someone else runs into this problem Awesome book by the way, highly recommended! Back to work...want to start on Beyond the Basics too!
  10. Just posted a solution over at the L8 bugs and workaround section, go have a look at This post Hopefully it solves the problem
  11. Mmm hello! I'm so happy to see good comments on the book! Will be my first Logic training book, didn't know what to expect from it, but it looks like its well worth it! Just checked and my copy is somewhere in the vicinity of France right now... if only it will arrive ASAP in South Africa! (apparently it arrives in 3 days) Really sad that there aren't any training places for Logic here in South Africa. Feel like a travelling to Cape Town David? Anyhow can't wait for the book...
