  1. Ya tough question ... I like GAP ... I don't use it esclusively ... I have used Nigel and I really like the tcelectronics tubifex... that's a great sounding amp...personally I have a great tube amp Mesa Lonestar Special ... class A really versatile and a total tone machine ... but i prefer software amps for recording... essentially once you get the tone from your amp... when you record it into Logic it is turned into a digital signal ... I think alot of the companies that are creating software amps have gotten pretty good at mimicking that ... but ultimately the reason i prefer soft-amps is that you can tweak the tone after you have the rest of the tracks recorded ... it's fine to get a killer tone from your amp but if at mix time you decide it's got too much crunch or not enough to sit in the mix properly you are stuck having to re-record your guitar parts... with the plug-ins you just tweak the sound til it fits...
  2. Ya STP is pretty awesome editing suite... just look under process at the top for all effects etc. also in the left pane you will see some tabs with effects, details, tracks analysis and a few others... it's a pretty extensive program so I can't really explain how to use it in a post here... I recommend the mac pro video tutorial on STP... great overview to get you accustomed to how STP works and a lot of useful applications...
  3. It has happened on separate occasions with different tracks the last time it happened I started a brand new project.. created an audio track and then imported an audio file from another project (which will play properly in itunes). When I tried to play it back it skipped as i described above....
  4. Thanks Cloggy... will sync settings affect the audio even if I have it set to internal and only basically have the firewire interface hooked up?? I know the file isn't corrupt because it can open it up in quciktime or itunes and it will play back fine without skipping.. kind of perplexing ... actually ...
  5. Bump... Anyone have any idea what causes this ????
  6. I've posted this same request many times in many places... it's so useful in so many situations besides what you want to use it for ... ie: making sure the background and lead vocals all end at the same time... especially if the phrase ends with and "s" or a "t". Or even if you background vocalist doesn't get the timing of the phrasing quite right ... I have perfected that many times in cubase quite easily.. of course you can always get the singer to do it again.... if they are still there when you notice how much it bugs you !! also sometimes people being what they are just can't get something stupid like that out of their heads... Anyways...come on logic... I too just want to work with one application for my audio projects...
  7. I'm sure there is a simple solution/reason for this.. it obvioulsy doesn't occur when I record in a project, but for some reason if I import audio files, when I hit play, the file will play along for a few seconds then skip ahead and play for a few more seconds then skip ahead again etc right to the end of the track. Can someone help me with what is going on here please? Is it a bit depth thing? If so what is the solution?? I can start a brand new project and import an audio file from another project and this will happen ... I can't say it happens all the time but it seems that recently this is happening leading me to believe I may have changed some sort of setting in preferences or something...
  8. Ya not sure why you feel the need to run at 88K but when I switched to imac from PC I had to get rid of my UAD-1 and I miss it. There is nothing like their 1176 compressor... that was a workhorse for me and I'm still experimenting with how to deal without it...I would suggest bringing your sample rate down to 48 ... which is plenty and see how many more instances you can squeeze out of the card... The plugs on that card are topnotch ....I was able to run plenty of plugs on a single card as well ... maybe there is something else wrong besides the high sample rate your using...
  9. Does anyone just listen to the mix anymore and set the levels... I actually like the default -3db setting, I find it requires the least amount of level tweaking as I play around with stereo imaging, but it occurs to me that realistically that is the only reason to have the pan law... if there is no pan law and a centred track is too loud because of it then I just bring that level down til it fits ... the pan law just means I dont have to play with the levels so much as I play with the track. Personally I just use the bounce for my final mixes, they sound like they should, that is the mixed track sounds the project as it played in Logic. If for some reason I thought the bounce didn't sound like it should have, I would just make some adjustments and do it again... but so far I haven't found the need ....
  10. ahh... thank you so much guys... i figured there had to be something to make this easy ... I appreciate the help ....
  11. Is there a way to do this??? If I set up the key I want the song in and then drag in Loops it will transpose the loops to that key...but what do you do when you get to a bar where a chord change happens? Just curious as I was recently just trying to put a quick little project together for a friend and had to stick to the green (midi) loops and then go in and manually transpose them... so the question is did I really have to do that or is it just that I need to learn the better way... I would appreciate hearing what some of you veteran loopers do ... thanks, Kevin
  12. If it's the right sound for the song I'm working on i'll drive a Kia... I rely on what my ears tell me over how much a plug costs or who makes it....
  13. Well actually when i use GAP on vocals its not for an effect its to use the tube simulation... you can in fact leave it to a setting where you are using a cabinet simulator but you really have to tweak it... set the cabinet to direct and you can just use the tube emulation and the guitar eq's. I also find you can do lots with plugs...I'm really happy with the channel strip setting Male Ambient Lead Vocal ... start there and try messing with some of the parameters etc... maybe put the GAP on the insert along with the other plugs ... I would mess with the plug ins before I started spending money on outboard gear unless the stuff your using now is crap but if you are getting a decent quality signal into your computer you should be able to dial in some good vocal tones with the plugs that come with logic Alot really depends on the voice of the singer too ... hard to imagine an instrument that is more diverse than the human voice... and when you think about how you would process a start differently than a les paul... it's not to hard to see why one persons settings wont work for another given human voices are far more diverse than strats and les pauls...
  14. Well I guess it depends on what kind of tone you want.. while as already pointed out they aren't necessarily trying to model particular amps ... it doesn't render the plug useless...it has a lot of usable tones...i dont use it in every song ...in fact i would say a little less than half ... for guitar tones ... but I have also experimented with using it on other instruments and even on vocals...
  15. Now you got the spirit !!! I'm willing to bet once you get used to doing it this way your workflow will actually go faster...just a matter of getting past the mental block of "I'm looking for this sound" I have gotten to the point where I just find a random setting and record my guitars with the thought that I will dial in the tones once I have done everything else. Being a guitar player I always thought that killer tone that I dialed up was gonna sound huge in the mix but... it never really worked. And I started out recording to tape so it meant new tone ... new performances ... lots of time wasted... i love these virtual amps just cause I can do the performance til I am happy with it and worry about the tone later...then if it isnt sitting in the mix right cause there's too much crunch i just play with that until the whole song sounds cohesive... or maybe the solo tone isn't creamy enough or needs delay or whatever... this is the way to go ... I really am starting to think that the instrument that we consider to be our main axe is the hardest one for us to deal with ... If I was a drummer I would probably never be finished mixing or processing the drum sounds....as it is now ... I have a formula that I like for dialing in drum tones... I stick to it for the most part and finish upwith the drums pretty quick... musicians ...quirky folk....
