  1. I plan to start working with my Logic projects inside a cloud-based folder so I can quickly continue working from my desktop to laptop, and am looking at using one of these: Dropbox Google Drive iCloud Drive I know quite a few people that use Dropbox, but I don't currently use it, so it would be yet another service to add to my ecosystem. I do use Google Drive quite a bit, and wanted to know if anyone has worked on Logic projects directly in it, or any of the other options.
  2. I'm thinking this is what I'm going to do. I just priced out the comparable iMac (3.6 GHz i9, 32GB ram, 2 TB SSD) and it only came out to 100 bucks more than my 16" MBP (not counting my educator discount). Fan noise is just a deal breaker for me. There's absolutely no way I can do a mix while having to ignore the fan noise that is coming out of this thing.
  3. Arghh! Thats something I need to consider. But I heard the new 16 inch MacBook is a little better than the old one? But again nobody likes fan noises, and this is something I have to think about before purchasing one. Yeah dude, and from what you were describing your workflow to be like, you will definitely be kicking the fan into gear. You will 100% notice a difference, especially if you keep the laptop on your desk, like I was planning on doing. I mean, maybe they fix it in later software updates or something, but I was really discouraged yesterday when I finally tried using it for composing. I haven't tried opening up my old projects yet, but from my brief tests, I'm not optimistic. I'd hate to hide this thing away in a soundproof system and lose this gorgeous screen, it's just a shame to me how distracting the fan noise was to me. If the fan was spinning like it was last night, there would be no way I would feel comfortable using my microphones in my home studio with this in the same room. I loved the idea of having my whole rig with me, samples and all, loaded onto one machine too...really bummed right now. One other thing to consider is your posture. I don't know about you, but the way I had my iMac setup forced me to have better posture to look at the monitors - back straight, looking up at the iMac. Putting the laptop on my desk and I immediately feel myself hunching over a lot more than I used to, and if I'm going to use this thing for the next 8 years, I don't want to mess up my health. For me, fan noise and physical health outweighs the "potential" of portability. That's basically what I'm looking at.
  4. If you're not a "fan" of fan noise, I would not recommend transitioning from an iMac to a MacBook Pro. I just did that, and day one, opening up one instance of Omnisphere in LPX kicked up enough fan noise for me to immediately question my decision of making the move. I'm immediately looking at my options for the new iMacs. I wish it was easier to search for "imac pro" posts, but the search engine doesn't let me search for that term!
  5. Return the MBP and get a 2019 iMac with the i9, you won't regret it. Yeah? No issues with the fans on those? I'm really tempted to go this route, especially with thinking more about my posture long-term using the laptop vs computer.
  6. Hey I just came here to see if anyone else was having the same issue! I was so excited I picked one of these up last week, but I didn't get to really test it until today. I'm coming from a late 2012 iMac that bit the dust the day before the 2016 was announced. I think I was so excited that I completely forgot to think about adding fan noise into my studio. Opening up one instance of Omnisphere 2 got the fan going pretty dang loud, and I immediately felt a sense of regret flow over me. I rarely noticed the fan on my old 2012 iMac, and when I did I felt like it was not too bad at all (external hard drives spinning behind my desk were more audible) . I can't imagine using my microphone with this thing in my room. I don't think it's a nitpicky thing at all, these things cost $$$, and that sound adds up in the audio production studio. I guess I'm going to have to look at those current iMacs...or maybe look at that iMac Pro? iMacs just got an update in 2019, maybe I'll just stick with the family. Maybe those iMac Pro's are way more than what I need. Also, I was wayyyy excited to have my full work-rig with me on the go for live performances and mobile recordings, and also picked up a beautiful Apollo x4 <3. If this is just the way it is, in regards to fan noise, it may honestly be a deal breaker for me, especially coming from a pretty quiet desktop. I don't really like the idea of hiding this thing in my desk (I have one of those Output Platform desks, so there really isn't a good spot for it). Also, as I'm getting older, I like being able to sit back in my chair, and i find that its a lot easier to keep good posture with my iMac than the MacBook Pro, which I'm constantly hunched over on when I'm using it. I feel like these two things are enough for me to go right back to my desktop setup.
  7. I've started noticing the same issue, which presents a very annoying problem for my workplace, where we have multiple identical rigs including a remote rig, and these quickly escalating project sizes are becoming a problem when transferring with lots of files on a daily basis. Here's the info I've gathered so far (Its hard to tell if this is a 'bug' or what exactly is going on). This is very early in my troubleshooting process but its a start: - Duplicating a Software Instrument track (not sure if this applies to audio tracks) increases the file size by ABOUT double it's starting size. So if I have a 50 MB LPX Project, duplicating a track will, on average (this is all just from watching file sizes) add about 50 MB to the project. I have not tested this against "adding" tracks, etc etc. - File -> Project Management -> Clean Up -> Delete Backups will reduce the file size back down to its 'normal' size - I have "Auto Backup" set to "Last Alternative Version". - It appears irrelevant if there is any audio in the project at all. I noticed this a few days ago when my boss finished a Logic Project and the file size was about 700 MB, compared to 20 MB for the other ones he worked on. The only thing that I noticed that was different was that he had duplicated a lot of software instrument tracks (there were no audio tracks present in the project)
  8. I know you don't have a category for this, but I'm keeping a personal list of software companies that have NOT announced compatibility/incompatibility yet so I can keep tabs on them since it appears I won't be updating to El Capitan yet ...these yearly OS updates are getting really exhausting not only for us users, but I bet the devs are getting really annoyed as well! Both WAVES and SPECTRASONICS have not announced compatibility yet.
  9. What method did you use to check the FPS? The reason I ask is I've received QuickTimes which say they are a certain FPS according to their 'info' in QuickTime Player, but are actually wrong when I check the frames in LPX. (I believe this is due to some assistant editor making some weird mistake when they outputted from their Avid) If you haven't already, I'd check frame by frame near the start of your video, comparing the QT timecode and LPX's timecode and see if it is truly 30 FPS.
  10. Hey guys I'm in between projects (film/tv composing) and I'm thinking about updating to 10.2, but there are lot of posted 10.2 bugs that have me considering waiting until the next update. Does anyone think any of the current bugs in 10.2 are 'deal breakers' in regards to deciding to update? I'm concerned about the 'Go To' issue, as well as anything related to editing regions, which seems like there are a lot right now.\\ thanks!
  11. iZotope software may have issues validating in El Capitan as well. They have posted a workaround on their website https://www.izotope.com/support/kb/index.php/kb/article/700-How_to_validate_iZotope_software_for_Logic_Pro_X_and_Final_Cut_X_in_OS_X_10.11_El_Capitan
  12. While I don't have a specific answer on how to take care of the issue you are having, honestly, coming from someone who is in the same line of work, I'd say think about switching back to 10.0.7 for now. At my job, we decided that we are going to wait until summer to update LPX, just because we have too many active projects going on right now, and the few of our fellow composers that updated to 10.1 are switching back to 10.0.7 (via someone who still has the 10.0.7 App, or using a Time Machine backup) There are just too many bugs right now overall to try to make the switch, and I'm sure a lot of these will (hopefully) be knocked out by summer.
  13. The new Logic Remote App for iPad requires that you are running LPX 10.1 I unfortunately had automatic updates enabled on my iPad, so when I begun to work this morning, I realized that Remote would no longer function with LPX 10.0.7. Since I'm in the middle of multiple extremely important projects, I simply cannot take the risk of updating to 10.1 until Summer. I also checked the App Description/Updates on Logic Remote in the app store, and they make NO MENTION that it requires LPX 10.1. So until I can figure out a way to re-install the previous version of Logic Remote, it looks like I won't be using it for a while So I guess the alternate title to this post could also be "Don't have "automatic updates" enabled on your iPad if you are consistently using it for professional work," which honestly, I should have known better Either way, this is still good to know.
  14. Does anyone have a method to audition Plugins/Channel strips for Software Instruments? This is technically possible on Audio Tracks via Channel Strips, but Channel Strips for Instrument Tracks contain both the Instrument+Plugins. It'd be so cool to be able to do something like this for Instrument tracks, as well as Audio Tracks!
