  1. TM does pretty much take over the whole drive...eventually. you'd want to partition it. perhaps you still can if you are on 10.5. for pc you will need macdrive. not sure of cost.
  2. it does not appear as though that device allows multichannel I/O. simply just stereo via the rec out. this from yamaha site... "In addition to the normal stereo buss, the MW12C and MW12CX has assignable busses (REC OUT). This feature gives you addes flexibility in routing the signals for recording and monitoring. Turning on the ON switch for any channel immediately routes that channel to the USB terminal and enables it for recording. Multiple channels selected in this way are, of course, recorded to a stereo mix on the computer. In this condition, each channel is also mixed to the stereo buss and can be monitored (with the Monitor Mix function)."
  3. it would be 400 speed however unless you are doing very large track count(48 or more) and/or 96khz it should be no problem. out of curiosity a macbook pro 2.2 should have both a 800 port and 400 no?
  4. you can go about it a couple different ways without getting a new enclosure. you can get an adapter or cable that goes from FW800 to FW400 or you can get a eSATA express34 card search here for 9pin - 6pin cables http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10301 search here for eSATA card. Only one I found that is truly native mac compatible(no drivers). and its a great price! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839228002
  5. sorry to be the bearer of bad news. the 3.5mm or 1/8" headphone out of the Mac is Toslink specifically mini-Toslink. which is two channels or encoded digital audio such as AC3 digital orDTS. Using with Logic you will only get stereo output. AC3 digital is as i stated surround DVD format, compressed, which Logic does not and can not output. you can create AC3 from a surround mix from Logic using Compressor. But that is most likely not what you seek in your quest. what you need is a firewire/usb interface with 6 or more analog outputs and a receiver with surround analog inputs. if you still want the optical out of your mac than go to apple. they sell them or they did the last i checked. or google mini-toslink to toslink. This link will answer a bit more elaborately. http://digitalproducer.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=69934&afterinter=true
  6. Have you not tried the full view (lower right) in UB? Gives you an expanded pattern editor. Try SFLogicNinja tutorials on YouTube, there are others as well but that is a good place to start for tutorials.

  8. I have a new uni MPB 2.53 and it definitely handles L8 well. The one annoying factor with it is only one firewire port. The prior models had two(400+800) So in my case with two external drives and audio interface bus powering devices is not an option without the addition of an ExpressCard. MBP's are sweet but it is a dance with having true portability. Keep in mind that with a Mac Pro you're also in need of a display which you must consider in comparing the price. Carrying it around a lot would come with a chiropractor/massage bill Another option would be a iMac and if you need more horse power get a mini/macbook and utilize the node features.
  9. I purchased a Novation SL Compact 49 and like it a lot. I've also heard good things on the AKAI MPK49. I had M-Audio before and did not care for it.
  10. This one is FW800 but it works and isn't terribly expensive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839228003 FYI if someone needs SATA expresscard. Even less $$$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839228002
  11. It works for basic system backup. It still isn't the best fail safe solution. Have you looked at Drobo? It is a bit more $ to get into with drives and all but it works solid.
  12. DVI is better but there are limits to how far you can extend it before the signal degrades, I believe DVI specs at 15', VGA is better in that respect. If you use a booster like I linked to than it should be no problem at all.
  13. VGA for sure! DVI maybe but you'd probably want to look into http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=2937
