  1. I'm still running Mountain Lion on my studio machine (2011 iMac quad core 2.7 i5 with 12g ram) My internet machine (2008 iMac c2duo 2.8 with 6g ram) (which was a clone of my studio machine and is used to road test software) was updated to Mavericks but I couldn't see any real improvement or reason to update my studio machine. Plus I hate how preview (spacebar) no longer works for .avi files and the replacement of "Labels" with "tags" bothered me immensely as I used that feature often as a quick reference for finding samples/ tunes and other files, often audio related. Also after a while my Mavericks machine has started to run slower and slower, further putting me off polluting my studio machine, which runs really well. What is the real appeal here of sticking Yosemite on there? Looks like a load of iPhone related fluff to me. I'll road test it on my dummy machine but I can't see myself running to use it in the studio unless I am forced to. I am running a 3rd party ssd in my studio machine so to think that there will be a problem with that further puts me off of installing YosemitePhoneOS onto there. Probably not helpful to your cause but really don't you just want Logic to work?
  2. I'm possibly not massively informed on this issue but from your signature it looks like you're running snow leopard still on a 2006 machine with a core2duo. From a bit of research I've done a 2012 macbook pro (pre retina) allows full upgrade of memory to 16gig, possibility to put in an ssd and also replace the superdrive with a second drive (either ssd or larger hd 7200rpm or maybe a hybrid.) It has USB3 and thunderbolt and firewire800 onboard. Get one with a quad 2.7 i7 and it's giving the current top end stock a pretty good run for their money. With Mountain Lion or even Mavericks, this machine can run the latest Logic X and it supports TRIM. This really is a kick ass machine for the money. Yes you can get better by spending much more from Apple. Yes this machine will eventually go out of date and Logic will move away from supporting this machine but if a 2006 machine with Snow Leopard has done well until now then surely this is still a step forward. I imagine someone will road test a hack for Yosemite before long and then things will be gravy still. If people can hack osx to run on a Windows tower then surely it can run successfully on Apple hardware with a 3rd party drive.
  3. Thanks you for your detailed response David, much appreciated. You are right, I have not properly explained my problem. The linear phase is placed on a bus track with hihats running to it. When the effect is turned on the timing goes out by around 1/64 so the hihats sound terribly delayed. When I shut off the effect the timing returns to normal. Everything is presequenced and nothing is being fed in live, hence why I thought that perhaps the pdc was not functioning for this particilar plug. Really I guess latency is the wrong term to have used here, the problem is that of this plug adding a delay to the signal despite pdc being active. Highlighting the name in orange when turning on low latency mode was just me confirming to myself that this was a latency inducing plugin. Thanks again. Hope this makes more sense now.
  4. I'm experiencing latency when using the linear phase eq on a percussion track. This started when I reopened a slightly older Logic X project, sure this didn't happen before. Anyone else notice this? It is as if plug in delay compensation is off for this effect. When I turn on low latency mode the name is highlighted in orange. If I use Linear Phase Eq on a new project there is no delay so I think this only occurs when there is substantial enough load on the system for pdc to be fairly active. Is this possibly a bug? I wax super chuffed when I changed eq to channel eq and it kept the same settings though. Is this new to Logic X?
  5. The iMac has a superior GPU (graphics card) 1 or 2 gb while the mac mini has intel 4000 chips. The processor you mention is also superior. Plus you can (unofficially) upgrade the iMac to 32gig so you may want to purchase 2x8gb chips to begin with to leave room to expand to 32 in the future. Always nice to know you have some breathing space to upgrade if/when you need to. A bulk of the cost of the iMac is the monitor but you add up the cost of an apple 27" monitor and a mac mini, the iMac gives you more bang for your buck. +1 for Triplets' advice above.
  6. Could you perhaps make is so that members are unable to "post" anything until they have completed the signature field. They would still be able to view the threads as a kind of named guest. As long as the signature has some useful information. Even if it is just the Logic version number
  7. I would upgrade at this point in the game and do a clean install of everything. Good luck with your new machine!
  8. With the 2011 model I'm pretty sure you can swap the DVD superdrive with a second HDD allowing you to put an ssd for system and program files and a 7200 for storage. Not too sure about the 2012 model. The 2012 model has usb3 and the 2011 does not. This could be a major swinging point given the prices ($200 and up) of current options to gain a usb3 port on earlier models using the thunderbolt port. Personally I would want to be able to add a second internal drive and have usb3.
  9. Just down a quick test and everything seems to be good with Logic X. Cakewalk Z3TA+2 needed to be rescanned a couple of times before it passed validation, same with a couple of others. Oh and my volt and state 32bit patches did not validate. Will have to see how fixable this is.
  10. PCI is what I meant yes. But still unsure how serviceable this is. 2 grand is a lot for a laptop IMO. Don't get me wrong, I would love one of theses babies, but for that amount of money I would like a little more serviceability. Just my opinion there, as someone who has tinkered and taken apart every computer I have ever owned.
  11. IDE ssd drive looks cool but what if it dies? Off to the apple store for the best prices in town? And the processor looks the same as the previous model. And the ram? A bit faster maybe? But if it fails? Off to apple again to pay 3 x the odds. I couldn't afford to buy my memory from apple at the time of purchase and I would want it to be maxed out. And I didn't mention properly the dual headphone/mic input. Brilliant. For those on the fly moments when you want to record something but, oh no! I don't have an iPhone earplug/mic combo. I know you can get adaptors to fix a lot of this but I would have Thunderbolt to Firewire, thunderbolt to VGA/HDMI, thunderbolt to Ethernet (oh no I've run out of thunderbolt ports, better not get any actual thunderbolt stuff then) retarded combo audio to line in/line out sockets, a usb splitter. It will look like a bad dreadlock monster before I've actually plugged in anything that I use and I still don't have my ethernet plugged in! I'm sure retina display is lovely but I have a 27' monitor at home with the same resolution. When I'm out I don't need it. I just want the power. Surely I'm not alone with this. Good luck with yours. I hope it works out great. That would be good news!
  12. What is up with the new designs for the Macbook Pro and the 21 inch iMac? Soldered in memory! Are you kidding me? My iMac failed not too long ago because of a dodgy memory chip. I took it out and carried on with a little less memory until I got a new one through the post. Obviously could not work on anything too memory intensive but at least the thing turned on! Reduced line in/mic and line out/headphones to one socket. Really? What a great plan because we all have iphone combo headphone mics around don't we? Surely what was needed was an EXTRA line out! One to act as a monitor and one to deal with the main output. This would take away the need for an external sound card for quite a few low end uses. This is supposed to be a pro computer and it sure as hell has the price tag to match! I would love to get a Macbook pro but to hell with this latest incarnation and to hell with their retina display! I want one that I can do stuff with and that doesn't have to take a trip to the apple store any time it encounters a problem that in all reality I could fix myself in under an hour! If they carry on like this the hackintosh is going to become the preferred way of running a mac. Only thing that swings me towards a genuine mac is the trackpad as all other laptops trackpads are total poop. Oh an only 2 usb and no ethernet. Well done there because no-one would ever have more than 2 usb devices would they. Especially not a pro user! Sorry for the rant but I had to get it off my chest!
  13. I'm pretty sure you can use your 2011 iMac as a 27" Monitor.
  14. Am I right in thinking that Logic Node is no longer available in Logic X? I see no options for it and no mention of it in the manual. I still have the application installed from Logic 9. Shame if it is gone as with thunderbolt connections between new Macs I would think we could squeeze some extra power out of our setups when need be.
  15. I believe that the external instrument option has been there at least since Logic 8. I found some automation does not function properly using external instrument mode. I encountered a problem with how it recognises certain automation here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39651&p=203962#p203962 but that is a side issue. Another factor is that volume and pan automation will affect the midi volume AND the track volume fader (and pan) at the same time. Again not specifically a timing issue but something to bear in mind. You may find volume automation to be in time (on the logic mixer) and yet other automation is out (external midi is out). These problems were in Logic 9. I don't know whether the problems still persist in Logic X. To be dead sure of what you are doing I think that your previous way of working is preferable, especially as you can easily dump it to audio when it is done, without creating another track. Also the external instrument track is dealing with 2 different types of data, midi and audio. It will process these at the same time even though the midi could be out of time with the audio. Seeing as you could well be having midi sync issues I would stay away from the external instrument until you have this issue sorted. This is just my opinion though. Good luck with your experiments. Hopefully once you get this fixed it will be solved for good. Check out the video posted above. I will do so too as maybe there is more that we are not realising. All the best.
