  1. Don't partition. Either pick-up a USB hard drive for backing up later, or a stack of DVDs.
  2. Indeed. Both, as I've had it on my old machine (32-bit) and my new one (64-bit.) I am still using Komplete 5 though... I imagine if I upgrade to 7 I may well fare better, but the flow isn't there right now. Right now though Logic won't even recognize that I have Guitar Rig installed. I'm running a student through the standalone right now, but Logic doesn't see it. Weird.
  3. I've actually had several crashes, all due to 32-bit compatibility with NI's Komplete. If I don't use Komplete (or use it sparingly) it goes away.
  4. Sorry I never reported back... I've been too busy WORKING with both screens!! It works great. I really like editing the piano roll on the left screen (which is lower resolution) and keeping the primary screen for arranging,m tweaking software instruments, etc. I haven't tried a mix yet, but I plan on doing the same thing then. Thanks for the assist.
  5. Thanks! I'll give that a shot once I get back from dinner.
  6. Hi all... Well, I finally got my iMac hooked up and moved into my studio and while I've got several snafus to figure out (like my Komplete plugs not showing up in Logic) right now I'm curious about the multi-display. It was easy enough to set up the dual displays for basic operation, but right now when I open a Logic project the arrange window shows up on the secondary monitor, instead of my iMac screen. I've tried messing around in the Display settings, but can't figure out why only Logic appears on the left screen first, as all of my other apps boot right onto my main screen.
  7. Actually, I think they do use disk streaming (Komplete Bundle, mainly Kontakt, Battery, and B4.) I might just have to reload the content once I can afford a FW800 drive.
  8. Any other opinions? I posted in another thread about whether it would be ok to put 3rd party sample libraries (like NI Komplete) onto a USB drive, saving my FW drive for audio and projects.
  9. By not keeping your audio files with your projects you're asking for a lot of trouble, while not gaining anything at all. Moving the Library is also usually unnecessary (except in the rare instances when you just need more space on the internal drive). A lot of people assume that the library will compete with audio recordings, but in fact the library contains mostly short samples and apple loops which are loaded in RAM when you start a project, then read from RAM as you work on your project. So it doesn't matter where the Library is, but by moving it you risk issues when updating Logic, since the updaters will simply assume you haven't moved it. I recommend a much simpler system: #1 System, Apps, Logic Library #2 Projects and Assets (including Audio) [optional] #3 Large 3rd party sample libraries (i.e. orchestral), if any. Is it ok the put the 3rd party libraries on a USB disk, since those samples will be (largely) loaded into RAM anyway? I only have the one FW800 port and for the time being I only have two FW drives and the Apogee Duet and someone else mentioned two HD and then the Apogee might be too much. I could easily load sample son a USB drive however!
  10. I have been storing my sample content on a single drive (where I'm writing my audio to), but I was worried about performance issues, as some people have said that's a bad idea. I've thought about snagging a FW800 drive... probably a Glyph or a OWC. Thanks for the clean install trick... that will make things MUCH easier.
  11. Hi all... I've got a new iMac on the way to replace my '07 (white 20") and I want to get everything running smoothly from the start. I have two 300 GB FW400 drives currently and while I've been previously using a single drive to store both audio data and saving the actual session files to the system drive, I'm planning on setting it up like this: System Drive: Necessary software and plug-in suite. EHDD #1: Audio (raw .wav and session files EHDD #2: Samples (Apple Loops, Native Instruments Komplete, EastWest) My interface is an Apogee Duet which will have to come last in the chain... should that be an issue? I've been upgrading from Logic 7 Express and am currently running 9.1... when I'm doing my installs should I only consider the core apps with the 7 and 8 versions and then let all of the Apple Loops and additional content be installed during the 9 section? I figure installing Logic and installing NI's Komplete is going to be quite time intensive, so I'm curious as to the best way to go about this. Any other tips? I'm trying to get everything running as cleanly and efficiently off the bat as I can. Thanks!
  12. I guess it doesn't matter... I just snagged one from the Apple Refurb store. Should be here next week and tide me over until I can jump into a Pro!
  13. Good to know! DId you guys buy a used, a Deal, or a the custom one?
  14. I've been waiting for a 2010 Mac Pro for bloody ever, but I just had another computer die on me (old PC) so I've gotta get something new so I can bump back my old iMac to replace the dead one. I still plan on snagging a Mac Pro as soon as the opportunity arises, but I'm thinking an iMac or a Mini might be the best bet, although a 13" MacBook Pro does have some appeal for me as well. I was looking at the PowerMax store and was wondering if you guys had any opinions on either the company or a specific model. I generally run projects with around 15-25 tracks and a mix of soft synths and audio, but a lot of guitar sims. I'm thinking even a Core2 would be ok as long as I load up the RAM.
