  1. I'm thinking of abandoning any mobile LogicPro work by not having a laptop. The new iPads have an M1 chip and my old MacBook pro's battery is swelling, and I have powerful enough desktops already and might buy more. What iPad software would you use for recording, for eventually mixing/production in Logic Pro? I've used Harmonic Dog DAW quite a bit, and like it, but wonder whether Auria or GarageBand might work a little more seamlessly with Logic Pro.
  2. Ha ha I made the same mistake, but Hz is not the same as Cents! Corrected it just before posting.
  3. I have a recording where the whole band is about A436 on average (16 cents flat off of A440). So, I go into the Project Settings -> Tuning and set the tune to A436 Equal Tempered. I believe I recall from past experience that this setting affects the pitch correction plugin, as well as the tuning of software instruments. To my surprise, in the Flex Pitch display, the "Fine Tune" Parameter doesn't seem to be affected by this setting. It says the same number of cents regardless of the project settings. Does Flex Pitch always work off of equal tempered A440? Or is there a way to get Flex Pitch to use project tuning? Can anyone confirm my finding, and perhaps suggest a work-around?
  4. Have you tried the iCloud folder sharing now that it's supposed to work? I've been playing with splice.com and blend.io. Both are designed more for collaboration. Both backup automatically to the cloud when you save. Splice.com keeps versions of projects and "users" can download versions and upload new versions, so maybe you could set yourself up as two different users.
  5. Hi guys, for some years I've been struggling with something that's probably easy. Background: I run a street party brass band and we do covers of songs with brand new (street brass + drums) instrumentation. I try to keep the form of the arrangement identical to the original popular so that the only big surprise for the audience is what can be done with horns and drums, and how guitars are unnecessary lol. My basic workflow is to import the cover song as an audio track, then beat map it using beat detection which results in a nice tempo track, this example is from "Basket Case" by Green Day: Once I have it beat mapped I work on the arrangement for the horns using midi tracks and software instruments*. But, when it comes to recording real acoustic horns+drums, or bouncing the synth horns+drums, I'd actually like to normalize the tempo, so we don't have to reproduce the weird tempo shifts from the original artist who clearly didn't record with a click track. I'd like to delete all the tempo shifts, but stretch the original audio accordingly so it still lines up with the metronome. For some reason, I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. I suppose it's hidden in the flex menu somehow or something. Can anyone enlighten me? TL;DR: After beatmapping the audio of song that was not recorded to a click, the user wants to normalize the tempo and stretch the original audio accordingly so it still lines up with the metronome. Thanks for the help! Hopefully this is an easy one. PS: * I actually use ReWire so I can do the horns in Notion, which is better suited to my arranging style with it's library of sounds and it's iPad app. But that's irrelevant to the question: the arrangement comes back to Logic via Rewire or via audio the same as if I'd done the composition in Logic midi tracks.
  6. I'm excited about the new iPads and Macs supposedly being announced October 30th. Apple has chosen to hold the event at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Surely this means there will be some music production announcement as well, right? Any speculation?
  7. Sorry to revive an old thread, but Logic Pro X will respect the "don't copy audio files" setting if your original project is saved as a folder (not a package) AND the new "save as" project is also saved as a folder (not a package) AND both projects are actually in the same folder. So, if you are working on a number of alternate versions, or a number of songs from the same recording session, just be sure to keep them all in the same folder and don't use the "package" option.
  8. Zoom level is in the score sets menu. I have no inconsistency between PDF and page view, so I don't know what's going on there.
  9. I'm curious as to how others work with composing/ arranging for vocalists. When I'm doing an arrangement or composition all of the parts have to work with the vocal part, so I want to sketch out the vocals to hear the part. I usually use some synth pad or flute sound for the vocal track, because it's different enough from the other instruments to be able to hear the rest of the arrangement. Sometimes I use choir Oohs. I can sing, but I'm usually composing/arranging for female vocalists, and I'm male. I can sing in another key and transpose it up, but that usually sounds dumb. Besides, automatic vocal-to-midi doesn't work very well, so I'd still have to enter in the notes manually to get the sheet music for the real musician when the composition/arrangement is nearing completion. (I don't consider the composition/arrangement to be complete until I get feedback from the actual musicians, but I can't get that feedback until I have the "near complete" version of all the parts in a score, including the vocal part.) Does this sound familiar? Or do you have a different work flow? A virtual singer would be a nice plugin, especially if it could sing actual words. Here are some I've found: Virtual Singer only works with Melody Assistant and Harmony Assistant. Vocaloid looks great, but only works as standalone on Windows or as a Cubase plugin. Realivox Blue looks promising, she can sing actual words, but all of the demos are slow ethereal stuff, so I'm skeptical she'd work for bluesy funky pop stuff. Realivox Ladies can sing "scat" syllables (close enough to words?)
  10. I'm looking for an excuse to buy an iPad pro I would like to use it for arranging. I'd like to be able to export the score and/or parts to the iPad (I suppose as MusicXML), take the iPad to rehearsal, make changes and notations at rehearsal with the iPad pencil thing based on feedback from the musicians and what I hear, and then copy those changes back into Logic. I know Logic doesn't import MusicXML, so I suppose I'd have to export as Midi from the scoring app, import the midi back into logic. So, does anyone have a workflow that works? Is there a particular iPad scoring app that works well with the iPad? With the iPad pro? In combination with Logic? There are SO many scoring apps on the app store, it's hard to know which ones to try.
  11. I discovered that by using tab to move between beats I can type in chords using the same keystrokes (bb6/eb for example) as in Band In A Box, it really is very quick. In the past I was entering chords using the annoying chord entry dialog, so this may not be a new feature but it's "new to me". But, it would still be nice to have an automatic way to get chords from a selection of the midi channels (e.g. piano and bass, or biab can export a chord channel with long notes.).
  12. Yes. On my music laptop: Thunderbolt to firewire for mobile audio interface. Thunderbolt display as docking station, to USB ports and to firewire, as my studio setup with firewire audio interface. I also carry a thunderbolt-to-ethernet adapter around with me, comes in handy. I bought a thunderbolt toaster-style hard drive caddy to easily move and copy recording assets (mostly video) to external hard drives. The family iMac has a 4bay thunderbolt hard drive enclosure, mostly for photography assets. You might think about buying this docking station thingy https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Thunderbolt/Dock/OWC/Thunderbolt2-Dock/ . I would buy one but my Thunderbolt Display contains much of that functionality.
  13. Say, hypothetically speaking, I was too lazy to type chord symbols into the score editor. Say, perhaps, that I had typed them into another program, like band-in-a-box, already, and had exported midi and text files containing the chord symbols. Any way to import chord symbols into a score, or have them generated from a midi track with the chords?
  14. Well the easiest way is to use Band In A Box. I've been using it for years. Well, decades, actually. With Band In a Box you just pick the tempo and type the chord names and it plays the rest of the band. You can drag and drop the resulting midi tracks into Logic as a starting arrangement. I see it's still a bit expensive, there are probably cheaper programs with the basic functionality nowadays.
  15. I'll just use some automation on the threshold. Thanks for the other ideas though.
